Yeah, I share this level of nihilism. X-Men has always been some flavor of "woke," and the 90's cartoon wasn't subtle about that aspect at all. But people who literally grew up watching it still accused '97 of "going woke" and ruining their cool very-not-gay cartoon. The level of selective retention they have with media they consume is an issue beyond media literacy. They see what the want to see; "ha ha! The Boys is so based for making GBS threads on 'Brave Maeve!' Vought is actually the Corrupt Left, and Homelander is awesome and right!"

I imagine they view Bastion as a kind of globalist George Soros type trying to incept average Americans with Socialism, while also rejecting the obvious mutants-as-queer metaphor as some kind of "political" Disney corporate dictate they resent and refuse to integrate into their reading.

There's always gonna be people like this, but don't let dumbfuck twitter bleating give them a bigger impression than they deserve. Visibility, normalization, inculcation, these things may not change minds by themselves, but they have their role. Media exposure does have an effect, decades of research and case examples have borne that out. Like KurdtLives said, the ride-or-die MAGA types aren't the only people to consider.

My brother is watching this show with his 10 year old son, and the kid apparently told him this, “So, when Bastion says 'too little too late' when he finds out Val Cooper released Magneto, is that because he turned Magneto into a Prime Sentinel when he had him captured?” He said he was also thinking about how Bastian, in the previous episode, was commenting on how warmth makes the skin more pliable and easier to work with when shaving him.

No idea if the idea will pan out, but I'm proud of my nephew.

The ending being a misdirect where Magneto wants the X-Men to take him out before he succumbs to the programming could be a cool twist.

Spider-Man is my favorite super hero guy and that show is probably a big part of it, and it was awesome to see him in this episode for a few seconds, but that show didn't have the same ongoing storyline vibe the original X-Men did. He should show up in X-Men 98 teaching a class though.

Honestly, this is where X-Men kind of goes off the rails for a while. They get swept up in 90s-00s crossover mania and blockbuster event-o-rama, a bunch of just weird poo poo happens like Feral Wolverine and Xorn and Danger, Marvel really squeezes blood from the mutant stone with X-titles proliferating like nukes in the 60s. I mean, not everything was terrible, but much like Spider-Man around the same timeframe, the ratio of decent to crap really takes a dive. Or soars. Whatever means it got pretty lame overall.

This isn't any kind of complaint or anything, so far the show has shown itself quite adept at sifting through the chaff to find those decent germs, just saying -- they had their work cut out for them, is there ever chaff.

Yeah, this was right about where I checked out of the X-Men for years. I already had kind of when Claremont and Simonson left but still would keep abreast of things, then came back fully for AoA but once that was over, I didn't bother again until after Morrison's run was done and collected. I was all about Vertigo, Wildstorm, and Hellboy for ages, don't think I touched any Marvel books in this period.

A showrunner is a boss. He didn't have "fellow workers" he was management.

I find the idea of saying he has to be rehired silly given that we don't actually know what he was fired for. It obviously wasn't become of the quality of the work.

Spider-Man 98 could be a fun one off to just close the potential find MJ story. I agree it doesn't have the same depth that X-Men did but knowing their restrictions, it would be interesting to see what they could do.

The heavy implication was that, at best, they weren't fully aware of what they were volunteering for (I think Bastion said something about "I kept the scientific details to myself").

Yeah, probably like, any actual volunteers would be the FoH folks and such but even they wouldn't get told the full details that Bastion can just override your free will. Then he's probably kidnapping a few folks here and there as well to both bulk up the numbers and some of them to be placed ideally like the reporter or the family butler who first attacked Jubilee and Sunspot.

to amend my earlier statement, I, personally, would be somewhat pleased if the showrunner of X-men 97, Beau DeMayo, possibly returned as showrunner, as long as he did not use his position as management to abuse his staff or otherwise abuse the inherent power imbalance found in his position, since he did have a role in the writing of at least some of the scripts of the show, but did so with the able help of his writing team.

Yep. For the exact dialogue:

Val: Do these people even know what you're doing to them?
Bastion: I omit the more 'technical' details. but they know they're joining something far greater than themselves. After this they wake up in their daily lives with no memory of ever being here.

I should add he says all this as evilly as possible - placing special emphasis on "technical details" to highlight how none of these folks knew a drat thing about what was gonna be done to them - while Horror music plays in the background.

There's no reason to think Trish, who was coming to apologize to Beast for being insensitive, was an attendee of some hate group.

If extend the racism metaphors further it makes a lot of sense. Some of those people were absolutely ready to join, others get in indoctrinated and don't care, and yah some are just not told and experimented on.

Gaz-L posted:

Not exactly. There's something like a majority requirement for movie screenplays if the credit goes for arbitration, but whoever wrote the first pass gets their name on it if they contributed even a third.

WGA Screen Credit Manual posted:

The first writer on an original screenplay shall be entitled to screenplay credit if such writer’s work represents a contribution of more than 33% to the final shooting script. Any subsequent writer or writing team must contribute 50% to the final shooting script. A subsequent writer who is a production executive, or a subsequent writing team that includes a production executive, must contribute more than 50% to the final shooting script.

Film credits are very winner take all - either your name is in the credits for the movie or it isn't, so those are pretty binding - if someone feels they got screwed, they're going to go to arbitration because there are six figures at stake. A writer who did (say) 80% of the work can voluntarily choose to share credit with someone who did 20% of the work though, that's allowed.

The rules for teleplays are a lot fuzzier and subjective, because the work is a lot more collaborative across the season and between episodes. There's nothing like a % threshold in there, and a (soft) limit of two writers per script, but with no contribution minimum to be featured on a script. In a writer's room world, credits are a lot less tied to specific episodes, though they still may be. Maybe you have two writers who each contributed one scene per episode for the entire season, and so you give each of them a "written by" credit on one episode, but their work isn't actually particularly concentrated in that episode, you just want to give them a credit somewhere.

There's no real question that DeMayo did a big chunk of the writing and story work for the season (and his name isn't even actually on every script, so it's not like there was a practice of "his name goes on everything" in the room), but for TV you can't assume that "name on a script" means "wrote 33%+ of that script" in the way you can for movies.

I get the show rules. It is crazy how many people online seem to have decided de Mayo needs to come back considering there were also issues with him when he worked on the Witcher.

I can’t imagine Disney would fire him from X-Men for minor reasons, the day before the premier, considering the quality of the show. Their goal is to make money, I’d think they wouldn’t get rid of a good show runner unless they needed to.
