The Myst discussion in IZ reminded me that in high school I read all the Myst novels and that they were actually not bad, considering what they were.

One of my big regrets about the way gaming went is that the Myst series dropped off. I think the high concept (there are books that if you touch take you to a whole new world, solve puzzles and figure out what's going on) could have carried it forever if they hadn't made a few pretty big mistakes, all of which were understandable given the market 20 years ago.

It feels like that whole genre has been relegated to indie darlings at this point and I think that's wasted potential.

idk if it was really mistakes. adventure games were once the genre that you used to show off the fancy graphics your PC could do, that role got taken over by FPS games

During the speech for their second win of the night, ZA/UM, the team behind Disco Elysium gave a special thanks to Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, the authors of The Communist Manifesto.

In this acceptance speech for the Fresh Indie Game Award, Helen Hendepere said that the team would like to thank “some of the great people that came before us.” The people they shouted out included the architects of communist thought, Marx and Engels, as well as Russian painter Vladimir Makovsky, and Viktor Tsoi, a Soviet singer and songwriter.

If you’ve played Disco Elysium, which features the vocal talents of the members of socialist podcast Chapo Trap House, you may not be surprised by these references. If not, I encourage you to read The Community Manifesto, which is about how a ghost called “communism” is haunting Europe. It’s pretty radical.

i think they just didn't know how to adapt to that reality. like instead they leaned into online stuff but like, from a Richard Garriott model, while adding bad American McGee level 3rd person stuff. It's cool that it was still good despite that, but like... I'm sure it turned people away.
also the whole concept of myst IV is that Myst is a video game adaptation of real events that isn't canon, lol. i think they torpedoed their IP.

Possible ridiculously obscure reference (and so exactly in Venture Bros' wheelhouse) that White is an albino, and they're apparently prone to poor vision and regular rapid eye movements that would make aiming a pain. (Especially since he and Billy are exaggerated caricatures of the show creators voicing each other, and I think Doc Hammer has a mild form of albinism himself, thus he'd know his poo poo) And yet they still keep giving him the shrink ray. ...well, I suppose Billy doesn't have depth perception.
