No reports of sickness? Well there must be no sickness then! If I'm not told about it, it doesn't exist!

I assume dairy industry farmers dutifully run to report sick cows, just as the medical establishment dutifully runs to report positive covid tests!
We're in great hands

hi thread long time no see. lots of fun on my end both with our Still Coviding homeschool group (many fun events with 20-30 kids and their caregivers, all in good masks and most people fit-tested) and organizing with SCORE (https://socialist-core.org/).

the last game changer we had, which allowed us to go back to doing pretty much whatever, except masked, was when we fit tested a long time ago (on the tail end of my almost-year in-person at work).

there's a new LAMP (almost-PCR) called PlusLife which, as opposed to the Cue and Lucira, gives quantitative results instead of a yes/no.

this is a game changer for us because it suggests if you test you can be assured for 4-12 hours that you're not seeing some ambiguous result and we can potentially feel comfortable unmasking in groups. you look at the graph and if the two lines (which I believe are looking at the N and ORF sequences, separately) are both flat and the control is reading right, that's a negative result. it takes 39 minutes.

huge caveat of course that you have to ensure the person swabbing has good testing technique and hits all the right spots. will only be able to do this with friendly people who are patient and thorough.

what really sold us was this absolutely fantastic, SA covid thread-level FAQ: https://virus.sucks/pluslife_en/ which captures so much nuance it's just fantastic.

i was hoping to ask some of you to take a look at the FAQ and its data because I know I always miss things. every question I had that I tweeted at them they directed me to the relevant section of the FAQ.

we haven't pulled the trigger yet. it's $400 for the unit and then $12 per test (including shipping. although we plan to buy in bulk with others) and there's a whole bunch of discount codes, too. so way lower than $50/cue and $50 current price per Lucira (ignoring Lucira being so error-prone).

We just got our PlusLife unit for $210 after the discount codes and we found out a few weeks ago our friend got hers for $160. Tests are $7 each plus shipping right now.

I've had a hospital administration give me the "we don't have sick people here" line when I was trying to get the people that would be around our new born baby to wear N95s. And the answer to the obvious question was of course no, they don't test anyone.

well yeah, a hospital is a place for profitable elective surgeries and old person joint replacements, not a place where sick people go

The health agency acknowledged the five-year historical average the current uptick is based on includes several years of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time of reduced norovirus reports.

lmao that it’s “several years” now.

In the twenty thirties, they’ll say that we had a pandemic decade, but don’t worry, it ended a few years back from whatever date they’re speaking on.

“I think we're still going to see some changes in how common viruses behave because of the three years that people were doing less and interacting less.”

i try and keep them room temperature, so i guess keeping them in the fridge might work, but you may have to run a trail on that one. i left mine in the car so i think high temps destroy it a lot faster

i think this is a reason to order it more "locally" from amazon rather than the australian site, if longer shipping times are going to expose it to time outside its temperature range (and a more unpredictable arrival on a hot day)

edit: hm. every listing says "do not refrigerate" with no reason given, so i'm guessing the efficacy goes way down when the liquid is too cold and viscous to spray. how else to guarantee it never crosses 30C...
