Popping out of my lurking to ask a question If you had a friend who you wanted to come to your wedding, but he is engaged to a current Tory MP…would you invite them?

You don't have to be nice anyone. If you wanna keep the friendship, you might have to suck it up and invite the Tory MP but I suspect lots of people itt would be perfectly happy to

Also if the MP in question is Gary Sambrook, I heard on good authority that he eats big dinners. So you'd be doing yourself out of more cash.

I used to have monthly one to one meetings with my old Tory MP oval office Oliver Colvile at his flat back in the day, and I really wish I'd recorded them. A few things I remember: He was especially proud that he went to Stowe school and only got a single O level, and even prouder of what I believe was his only act of community service that he did while in his 5th form - helping an elderly couple move out of their moldy flat and into a council flat. He also spent a while describing his career path before becoming an MP, explaining that he was terrible at them all. One of the jobs was a diamond grader at De Beers before he was sacked, and the rest were nepo jobs reserved for Tory spawn. He eventually ran a Tory policy publishing company before becoming an MP. He was bizarrely trying to sell all of this off as "Look, I'm just like a common man because I'm terrible at everything." He also praised the security at the Millfields gated community where he lived, saying that there was an incident involving a girl, and they were able to discreetly escort her out of the compound. One of my biggest regrets was not digging for more info about that story.... I also wish I'd recorded the exchange where he lied "I've never seen or been offered cannabis in my life", where I then passed him a bag containing a 1g bud, then pulled out two pure one-skin joints and a lighter and said 'Fancy striking it off your bucket list?' (he declined).... It's incredible that establishment failsons like Colvile can rise to become PM. He had no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and his only qualification was that he belonged to a long-established slave and plantation owning naval family.

Guavanaut posted:Funerals are the ones that get me. You can do a registry office wedding/civil partnership with a pub function room reception for a few hundred if you do it off-season, and most of that will be behind the bar for drinks, whereas a funeral costs a grand at minimum just for a direct cremation/unattended funeral, which nobody except the person who is (hopefully) already dead will be even allowed to attend. My mam looked into this. Apparently 5 or 6 years down the line, when they've done all they can, they get in touch with the family to deal with the remains. Which seems like just punting a burial/cremation down the road.
