Bad news! :v:

I just rolled with it, accepting that ol' Beef Supreme has hosed something up once again. He even warned me he was going to do it, loudly telling everyone what all living things' weakness is halfway through lol

But yeah turns out the Wait command wears off and it will do it at the worst time. That's a really fun and good fight though. The Sphinx is so cool

friend me on steam (sbjnctv) so I can experience Beef Supreme!

also, even if you are mod-averse, I highly recommend this mod, which fixed a normal map compression error in the game. I can imagine Capcom issuing an update that fixes this, because it's so dumb and simple and makes everything look so much better:

This mod does 2 things. It forces the game to always load the highest quality normal maps, while also addressing a compression error on every texture.
This was achieved with a Photoshop script via a series of batch action. Simple, with immediate results.
The best way to verify that the mod is working as intended, is by looking at your character's skin at night, especially near a light source. But this also affects the sharpness and definition of the appearance of everything in the game.

Man, I can't stop playing. I've done just about everything there is to do, minus a handful of quests, but it's just so fun to load up the game, pick a direction, and have have a ramble with the lads and see where the day takes us. Still eternally thirsty for WLC though.

I've squeezed about all the enjoyment I could from the Captain America shield/punch style, so now I'm rolling with a crew of all archers, mostly so I can take revenge on the harpies that took so long to get into fist range.

Warfarer with Tempest Shot, Augural Flare and Recovery Arrow is a nicely balanced setup, and you don't even need a mage anymore. I'm going to switch out Flare for Aromatic resurgence and see if it turns my archer pawns into machineguns.

The LOD thing is dumb but that doesn't seem likely to be the root cause of the shittiest examples of performance, since GPU hardly seems to make a difference. The fact that it gets super garbagey in the cities regardless of what you're looking at and quickly improves as you leave town doesn't seem like an LOD issue to me, it seems like what everyone was originally saying including the devs themselves: too many NPCs to simulate. I can attest that I upgraded to a 7800X3D with no GPU upgrade and gained like 25fps in the cities.

it’s very much a level of detail issue, but it’s probably as much about the simulation level of detail as it is about the mesh and texture and shader selection

I wonder if they do animation on the CPU, hmm

Vermain
Sep 5, 2006

my speculation before was that the game is running some kind of weight-related physics simulation on various kinematic points for each actor, which is what enables stumbling over rocks, getting knocked over if you get whacked while walking on uneven terrain, pulling down large monsters if they're stumbling and enough weight is on a specific part of their body, etc. it allows for that very visceral feeling of movement, but that kind of fidelity is going to make any CPU chug like a steamboat when it's performing that calculation for 30+ NPCs every physics frame

Generally yes, anything that matters to gameplay, like animation and physics, still has to be done on the CPU.

Though I suppose Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator 2 proves it's possible to move a lot of game logic to the GPU and do some pretty crazy stuff.

Subjunctive

You have to animate the hitboxes on the CPU, because it’s connected to the physics sim and game consequences, but you don’t necessarily have to animate blowing tree branches or clothes or particle effects or even the fully-detailed character mesh there because it’s just visual. You can get away with a pretty crude representation and still make the inverse kinematics come together.

I suspect they do a lot of stuff on the CPU that could be done on modern GPUs because it didn’t make sense to do GPU work when the engine was being built (and especially not for consoles then)

idk, dragonsplaguing a city didn't seem to improve the fps any. Maybe because all the corpses were still around. Once they were all moved to the morgue it didn't get any better because the game repopulated the city with generics at the same time.

Another crazy thing is that the game seems to remember the location of items dropped on the ground forever(?). I'd gotten to the point of just not bothering to pick up after myself any more since I was rich and the storage chest was overflowing with items I wasn't even using. Then I walk past a spot I haven't been to in weeks or months of game time, and there's things just laying on the ground, like a horn from a minotaur I fought once or some harpsud that was in a box I kicked.

Just seems wild that there's no cleanup process for that stuff other than your pawns maybe klepping ir.

Fallout 3 levels of optimized game development on display here. I wonder if this game too will corrupt your save if you leave enough poo poo on the floor across the world or touch enough physics objects.

Edit: in the first game, over a little while, items on the ground would slowly turn black and flashing and eventually vanish. Corpses do in this one but that's about all.

Cyberpunk 2077 had (has?) that issue and if your save file grew to a certain limit then it got corrupted, and the community manager for the game went out saying "simply start the game over, dawg."

It was 1.06 or so. One of the very early hotfixes, since it was one of the few truly game breaking bugs 2077 had.

But speaking of bugs, the texture fix mod author found another one: a bunch of high res textures for face and head parts in the game aren't loaded because they aren't in the right path, so now there's a second file to fix those.

...must attack and fall upon them with a gallant bearing and a fearless heart, and, if possible, vanquish and destroy them, even though they have for armour the shells of a certain fish, that they say are harder than diamonds, and in place of swords wield trenchant blades of Damascus steel...

Just started the game and am having a lot of fun tossing enemies around with the fighter’s upgraded shield slam. A few questions from a new player:

1. Classes seem to have lost some complexity compared to dd1. There’s no weapon switching and fewer abilities. Does this stay the same, or do I have to wait until I unlock things like mystic spearhand or warfarer (stupid name) for more variety/versatility?

2. Are there any major things to really look out for in terms of missing quests or progressing the story too fast? Any points where lots of things unlock that I should hurry towards? I’ve been given a list of tasks to accomplish before the coronation of the fake sovran or something, but I mainly just want to bash monsters.

3. Gold feels really tight. I can barely afford to keep my weapons up to date and my armor is lagging far behind. Staying at the inn is a big expense. Is this normal?

Regarding gold, a good way to make money early on (and later, but has a bigger impact earlier) is to recruit pawns with a quest to kill some basic monster (Iike a Cyclops or Ogre) for 10,000 gold. You can also get by fine without constantly upgrading stuff. If you find good gear for certain vocations you can also just try switching to those for a while.

As for missable quests, there are a number that disappear once you complete the coronation thing. The most significant is one that requires you go back to visit Melve at some point. I think the one involving Wilhelmina might also expire at the same point, but less sure about that. I don't think there's anything missable with significant gameplay consequences, though.

edit: On the off-chance you haven't noticed, camping doesn't actually use up the camp supplies unless monsters attack you at night (which is pretty rare as long as you make sure to kill stuff nearby before camping). I remember thinking "how the gently caress are we supposed to afford the cost of camp supplies and inns?" before realizing camping is mostly free.

There's also a quest some lady in the city offers you to house-sit for a week, and afterwards you can purchase that house for 20,000. You can then freely sleep there.

You generally have access to more abilities in DD2 than you had in DD1, since many abilities that you had to slot previously have become Core. Such as Tusk Toss for example.

More advanced classes generally offer less variety within them, not more, since they're all somewhat underbaked compared to base classes.

I don’t see how that works out to more abilities, at least by vocation level 5. 4+tusk toss+empale =6, except tusk toss feels watered down to allow for it to be a core skill that doesn’t cost stamina and empale doesn’t really feel like it competes with skills either. I guess thief can be much more of a dagger specialist than strider, but that doesn’t seem nearly as exciting as being able to use the bow. If the more advanced classes are underbaked, that leaves warrior as the only vocation to feel excited about compared to the first game. Obviously I need to keep playing before forming an opinion, but at first glance it feels like a big step back.

the class design is a serious mixed bag. Warrior is vastly improved and much more interesting to play with the timed swing chains and monster hunter greatsword tackle, and sorcerer is much more active thanks to quickspell + galvanize. then they completely poo poo on magic archer and the archer half of strider by taking away all their mobility and defensive moves, watering down their ability to do anything interesting besides shoot. Mystic spearhand is a weird mix of abilities that are potentially strong but also uncomfortable to use, except they also gave it a long-lasting literal invincibility AOE move you can keep active with 100% uptime so you can trivially win with nothing but default attacks and that move. Thief has one of the most active and coherent kits out of the box except they also gave it full invincibility on top of some of the best DPS in the game. I have no idea how they arrived at some of these classes, especially when this isn’t their first stab at designing them
