Mister Olympus posted:okay but what's the rubber hose and lamp for They are interrogation cliches. First, you put someone under a lamp in a dark room, shining the light in their eyes to keep them disoriented and isolated. Then, you beat them with a rubber hose because it's painful but doesn't injure them enough to stop the interrogation.

Tonight, a lot of spoiler curtains, beginning with Our Boarding House (July 30-August 1, 1925) timg for a Romani slur. This spoiler, however, is for the Usual Reasons, and an extra one I'm a little bit more worried about. The reason why: If this is the same Jason I'm thinking of, he's going to become a recurring character for the better part of the next two decades (at least). The character design changes a little, but the mouth is always the same minstrel-style white circle, and the eye dialect doesn't get much better either. I'm a masochist for circling back to the 20s over and over again. Out Our Way: Cowboys Revisited (July 31, 1925) Toonerville Folks (October 19-21, 1922) Spoiler for the Usual Reasons (again): And a modesty one for Aunt Eppie: Dok's "Out Of The Way, You Swine! A Cartoonist's Creation Is Coming!" Duck (March 18, 1915) Sadly, a peace treaty disrupted The Adventures of Marmaduke, so Del had to wrap things up in a hurry. (March 15-16, 1940; no strip for the 14th, either due to a space crunch or a twelfth-hour rewrite)

FINGERPORI Here we see the Finnish version of the "duck/duck" joke. Yes, hard as it might be to believe, in Finnish "Yes they can" and "boot" are the same words. The root for the first one is "saada", to get, to be allowed etc. The third person form of this is "saa". In Finnish we can add the -pas suffix to the verb to indicate it's a "no you can't"/"yes I can" situation. So when the man tells Heimo that people can't throw just whatever junk they want in the boot throwing competition, he responds "saapas", ie. "yes they can". And of course the word for boot is also "saapas". BONUS FINGERPORI eww
