That's... Bizarre. Why won't they give people change?!

There's no requirement for a business to provide change under arcane laws of what defines legal tender (the moar you know), but probably more likely it encourages people to pay by card which saves them hassle of dealing with cash. If anybody asks just roll out the old 'due to covid mate' as the catch-all.

making change is a pain, slows things down, and requires keeping a cash stock in various denominations? In some ways "We'll take cash but we won't give change" is better than "we won't take cash at all" which some places are moving to, annoyingly.

It absolutely isn't. If you're going to accept cash, you're going to have to make change. Who the hell has exact change for what they expect to buy?

There is no legal obligation for a business to make change. Money laws are ancient and weird.

That may be, but there's also the law that a woman may piss in a bobby's helmet. Laws can be laws and be dog-poo poo stupid. A business leaning on "nah, not legally required" when they're A SERVICE PLACE is dumb.

I stepped away because I really wasn't sure how to challenge "yeah but you don't have to give change and it's hassle" so thanks for summarising this very basic rebuttal.

If you accept cash, you've gotta give change. Not doing so is ridiculous.

My point wasn't that it's a good thing, it obviously isn't. But if you're looking from the perspective of someone who literally only has cash to spend and is trying to buy food, it is preferable to have a store that will take your cash (but not make change) than to be turned away entirely. Which has happened to me multiple times.

"If you accept cash" This shouldn't be an if!

Nando’s? I jest.

You’ve got Borough Market right next to London Bridge station, so lots of choice. Bao, Padella, Katzenjammers. Yen Burger looks quite interesting, I’d like to give that a go.

Recommendations for somewhere fancy, not noisy (white table cloths sort of atmosphere but the table cloths aren't strictly required) with lighter food/set menus? Any cuisine is OK in theory but ideally something approachable. Trying to organise a meal to commemorate my father's mother. Bonus points if there is nice outdoors seating as it'll be in June.

Brasserie Zedel is good for an impressive decor and pretty traditional French food and vibe. I think the food is still good, but it did change hands vaguely recently. I think.

Ignore that, it's pretty darn noisy.

Noble Rot does a great set menu and isn't noisy (actually the Mayfair one can be) but no outdoor seating. Along similar lines would be Andrew Edmunds in Soho.

Can deeply second this, although I still feel like Brat has the edge on it for reasons I can't fully articulate!

Pretty insanely noisy, though, even with a ceiling full of baffles. My partner has hearing loss and while most places are bad for noise these days, Mountain was really tough.

Anyone got good coffee spots and chains? I've recently been looking Blank Street who are popping up all over, and Fuckoffee has a couple around Bethnal Green and I think elsewhere that we good.

There's also Algerian Coffee Stores in Soho for beans for home, although you can also get a good £1 cup there as well, you just can't sit down.

Hagen are normally decent although my local one has got noticeably worse with a recent change of staff. In central London my spots are:
Kaffeine
Rapha (yes the cycling shop, coffee is great)
Colonna and Smalls
Prufrock

I'm also around crouch end a fair bit and coffee circus and Velasquez and Van Wezel there are both great.

"I just love beeting off"

I got very turned off blank street coffee when I read that they're basically a VC funded business model of creating an independent coffee shop vibe and then using delivered pastries and machine brewed coffee to ensure staff need minimal training (and so are more replaceable). Their coffee seems popular enough I'm sure it's nice but the business as a whole isn't something I want to support.

Department of coffee and social affairs has always been pretty good for me, although nearly all my coffee nowadays is brewed at home or just pret filter coffees.

Don’t go to blank street. I don’t know if he still owns it, but the Fuckoffee guy used to post racist and transphobic stuff on Facebook.

Places I like:

Paradox, Daze, Batch Baby, Nagare, Lodestar in east-ish London.

Prufrock, Formative, Nostos, Kaffeine, Rosslyn, Omotesando, Workshop, Kiss The Hippo, Qima, WatchHouse in central London.
