other than using someone's surface rt i haven't used windows 8 on a tablet, how does it compare to just using it with splashtop? i mean i get that splashtop is a little laggy because its over a network but it really didn't seem too bad (despite the gestures and poo poo being retared that is)

it has been getting steadily better over the past like decade that i've been periodically checking it out but i dont think this will ever happen beyond it running like office 97 or something

its just something neat to play with sometimes. its actually kinda impressive how much they were able to imitate win 2k/xp. most of the dialogs and poo poo are either exactly the same or like 99% similar and in fact waaay back in high school i used to extract cmd.exe, regedit.exe, taskmgr.exe, etc. from really early reactos builds because they were functionally identical to the real deal but didn't bother to check for user privileges so they would let you do admin stuff :getin:

u see zune ui was designed by an actual person with good taste

then metro came about and it was actually p drat good on wp7. at the time everything else was all gradient and texture and skeumorph so flat simple design was a breath of fresh air. it may even have been influential. and tech sites went "wow ms did a nice design" and ms went "whhaaaaaaaaa? how?" and then completely misunderstood everything about why metro was likable in the first place when putting it in all their products

satya's faith in the system has been rewarded :unsmith:

quote:

Microsoft boss Satya Nadella has been given a pay package worth $84.3m, making him one of the top earners in the tech industry.

The total pay package is largely made up of share awards, and most of the payments will be made over several years.

"In approving the initial annual total compensation opportunity for Mr Nadella, our board was mindful of both the fierce competition for talented executives in the technology sector and the demands on and responsibilities of the leader of a global organization with the scope and stature of Microsoft," it said in the filing.

Excluding the long-term share awards, Mr Nadella's pay package for this year totals $11.6m.

a lot of the reactos userspace stuff is based on wine

wine hasn't been able to run office for a long time. i think the last working version office 2003, and even then it was only in windows 9x mode, the nt/xp stuff would break it

reactos ain't gonna run office for a long time

for apps that are well supported wine is way better than fusion in coherence mode or whatever its called since it actually draws everything natively through quartz

Ah that explains it. Thanks for testing though, it is amusing to see.

Also yeah whatever it's doing to test the amount of RAM probably returns a zero value or something.

Huh this sounds neat. Are any apps that are actually useful well supported?

lots of stuff actually runs but its kinda a crapshoot whether or not it will function completely bug-free i guess. older games (even more complex dx9-era stuff) run about as well as they do under windows and in some cases (16-bit windows) its ironically the only way to play them without a vm

honestly i think most of the criticism of wine on os x was aimed at it when it used to use X11 instead of quartz for its graphics backend. since then its gotten much much better
