If Alonso does Sonoma, coming to Indycar next year has to be a serious option for him. Serious enough that if I were McClaren, I would throw all the money in the world for him to stay in F1. I wonder if Alonso would do something along the lines of staying in F1 with MC, but sign on for only one guaranteed year with an Alonso option for 2-3 more. Or perhaps a contract with performance clauses that lets him do Indy or other races over here should the car be terrible again. At least he knows he holds all the leverage here.

maybe hes just going to participate in the big 'new driver' test that all the teams do before sonoma now... i think that would be my guess right now

I really wish McLaren, Red Bull, and Haas would use IndyCar to house satelite teams. (Use them for "test drivers", and such) But I digress. Alonso feels more "at home" here and seems to miss it. That's unusual to say, but his actions during the season seem to show me that.

Wishful thinking. Then again, if F1 wanted to make better inroads in the US, having familiar F1 teams and liveries show up for the 500 or select other Indycar races might not be the worst investment in the world.

SiPag could race in F1 now if someone offered him a ride. WindyMan posted:Wishful thinking. Fun fact: before the "points earned over three years" system was established, simply finishing in the top 5 in Indycar standings made you eligible for a super license. I'm sure that resulted in a pretty hilarious list of people eligible for a super license over the years that you would never actually expect. Alonso holds all the leverage by staying with McLaren/Honda. He loses that taking some dumb full time IndyCar ride. Until they provide him with a competitive car he can pretty much make any demand he wants whether it be go slumming for a month in America or Le Mans or whatever. He has a major automotive manufacturer and race team by the balls.

IIRC, starting a team here is pretty contingent on getting their engine problems fixed and returning to being one of the top 3-4 teams.

Although that would also be the one thing that would prevent Alonso wanting to move to drive for it.

The scenario we should all be rooting for is: Alonso re-signs for McLaren, wins the world title next year, leaves F1 to do IndyCar and Le Mans in 2019.

All I want is Alonso to win a 500, and then a Le Mans drive that has both JPM and Alonso on it so they can both knock out the triple. I'd say an LMP1 drive but... uh... edit: also modify the triple so it's just a monaco win and not a championship win because I forgot JPM never won the title. Usually when I post something like this some big news item will drop. That all being said, have you guys noticed USAC has started to sanction some series that are actually outside of their usual series? Stadium Super Trucks, The Atlantics Series, and Pirelli World Challenge are now all sanctioned by USAC. Is there a reason behind any of this? Also I do wonder why there's a "split" between USAC and IMS as it were. I KNOW about the 1997 IRL Season, but it's a bit odd considering Tony Hulman founded USAC and all. How does IMS/ICS have zero control over that sanctioning body?
