yeah I get that, I meant that the way she phrased that implies that there were people who were outright rude to her (like girls und panzer guy got by the end), and it really takes a lot to just get outright insulted to your face, especially when it's being recorded.

You know, I've never been one to complain about voice acting, whether in video game or even anime dubs. Persona 5 Japanese voice DLC? No fuckin thanks, P5's dub is dope. In this thread last week people said the only reason most people hated Tidus was because of the VA, and I think that's super wrong and that Taylor did a pretty good job with what he was given. I know there's an undub version of Valkyrie Profile 2 floating around, and I'll never understand how some people can be so picky about what games they consider to have bad dubs.

Xenoblade Chronicle 2's dub is so loving awful that I'm downloading the Japanese VA pack now. Holy poo poo it's bad. I've heard stories where voice actors really don't know the context of their lines at all, and it results in really odd dialogue, but that was to games like FFX and loving Sonic Adventure, but I'm only an hour into XBC2 and there's already multiple spots where a character just get the totally wrong inflectional tone on a line (saying "gotcha" in a confident, assertive tone when the character was supposed to be playing a joke on someone, or saying "what do you mean" in a flat, conversational tone when the character is literally swordlocked with someone on an exploding ship). It's not Arc Rise Fantasia bad where some C-tier company about to go out of business threw a dub together really quickly bad, but considering the amount of money involved in the project it's baffling how it turned out this bad.

e: also one thing that irks me real bad is when a character tries to deliver a normal line of dialogue when in-game their character is doing like a Japanese MMORPG emote where they're jumping up and down or have their mouth completely agape and are pointing at something

I give a pass to FFX because it was really the first time a game of that scope had full VA and the English voice cast had to match the JP dub. All the principal actors have done good work outside of that game when they've reprised their roles.

Almost all of the time, bad voice acting comes down to bad or non-existent voice direction. Most people putting in any kind of video game work are professionals with dozens of credits to their name from anime and cartoons.

I'll stand by my opinion that even DiMaggio did a pretty good job with the "goofy racist older brother island man" character he was given.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to communicate to me here. Am I supposed to think the voice acting quality isn't going to be consistent throughout the game? The worst voice actor in the game so far is the main character, am I supposed to give him the benefit of the doubt after basically watching an hour's worth of cutscenes and think that maybe he'll get his literal act together sometime later in the game? When? When is it too early to judge voice acting? How many hours should I give him? If the game was only 30 hours, would it be okay to judge the voice acting at this point? I've never heard the FF13 defense applied to voice acting, "oh you know the voice acting starts off really bad but once you get to Gran Pulse the characters start to match the tone of their voice with their actions a lot better"

Nia's dub VA is one of the few instances I'd say they legit own their character, and give her a much more well-rounded personality. There's a few instances where it's at odds with the more hyperactive antics of a few individual cutscenes, but that comes across as a need for better direction than the actor's fault. For about 95% of the game it works really well.

Poppi's dub VA is pretty drat good as well. It's not easy to achieve nuanced emotion while keeping the robotic monotone.

The Xenoblade dub is good. I was sour on it at first but it both grew on me and got better, even if there are still some spots where Rex has to get loud and just can’t do it.

Nia, Morag, Tora, Brigid, Dromach, and Gramps are all good. I don’t think I could play without morag’s scottish accent.

Also I bought a nep. Thanks and god bless.

TBH I don’t even get why the FF10 dub as a whole is that bad, like there’s Yuna obviously but like, maybe my ears are broken or people confuse Tidus being a whiny hyperactive idiot with his VA doing bad line reads but even now it stands head and shoulders above something like Fire Emblem: Fates, despite being way older.

Xenoblade 3D:

The last chapter in the game is the least interesting one since the driving conflict of the first 90 percent of the story has been resolved, and almost every character who drove the plot is dead (Xord, Mumhkar, Gadolt, Egil, Lady Meyneth, the entire Mechonis). What's left is two uninspired dungeons that you breeze through, two henchmen you kill off, and then you face off God in the void of space, which has happened in one too many JRPGs.

The leveling curve gets completely hosed in the end as well. You start off at Level 70 and you're handed quests that ask you take out Level 99 monsters. I hate the mechanic that penalizes the party's Agility if there's a gap between your level and the enemy. I had to grind through a ton of Telethia using Melia and lots of Agility Gems to get up to speed. I never beat that drat ape guarding a store-room key, but I was able to kill God without trying.

The game does a lot of things right, like being able to fast-travel across the giant world, not wasting your time with a game-over when you die, and having no consumables so you don't end up sitting on 99 Elixirs. What it really needed was a bestiary and some kind of list of the unique monsters you've beaten. I'd also appreciate 100 real side-quests over 400 crap ones.

There is far too much pointless loot, like equipment that is outclassed, enemy drops that are useless, and gems with random values so they can't be stacked. I really wish money had a use in this game.

RNG is bullshit, and no single-player game should ever bar progress behind it. The search for those Black Liver Beans took years off me, and that Shilx guy can go gently caress himself for asking me to look for aubergines long after the place where aubergines grow has been destroyed.

Props for being a stand-alone game with no hanging threads, instead of say, of being of part-one of a projected series with some robot chick on the cover and a pretentious German subtitle.

I liked that Fiora, who is the standard childhood-friend-love-interest gets killed in the first act but comes back and has a big role in the plot. In a game this long Shulk's motivation being solely revenge would have worn thin if there were no more twists. I lost interest in her when she goes back to being human with none of those sick robot-attachments.

I don't know what Melia is so hopeful for in the ending. The game understates how completely screwed over she is: her family is dead, most of her people have been wiped out, she's going to outlive everyone, and she doesn't even get the guy in the end.

Yeah I can certainly see problems with the English dub, part of it being maybe new voice actors and part of it being poor direction, but they've grown on me. Pyra, though I don't personally mind her kinda flat delivery, probably needed much more direction than she got, and Rex really needs to work on his yelling. If the cast is mostly new people then it's good to get more people in that line of work rather than just the usuals, though I guess that could also just be Nintendo avoiding strikes or demands for a decent wage.

Why would the Euro va's care about an american strike?

And no VA was affected for work in nintendo games, outside of Laura Bailey who took a self-strike from work as support.

The main problem with the dub is horrendous editing and bad direction, two things which people might not care because "Hey, it's not american. Different is good enough!"

I'm not sure how far in you are, but Pyra's delivery isn't flat; it's reserved. There's an actual plot reason for it you may not have gotten to yet; she is deeply miserable over the Aegis War and trying very hard to hide this fact.

My issue isn't the acting or the accents so much as the casting itself and how it ages up the kids in the cast drastically. Nia in particular sounds more like Rex's put-upon babysitter instead of a peer and Tora sounding less like a child makes him seem like more of shut-in creep than intended.

Also Zeke B. Ultimate Genbu's JP casting is perfect so that couldn't go anywhere but down, but I can't hold that against him.

The XC2 dub isn't great but I liked it a bit more as I played the game.

Pyra/Mythra's VA sounds like she got the script and then saw her character's artwork for the first time right before she recorded it because she always has a hint (or more) of "are you loving serious, what is this cheesecake bullshit" to everything she says.

Nia and a couple other VAs are pretty good in English and Poppi's constant disappointment/disapproval of Tora is enjoyable.

Malos reminds me of the guy who voices Saito in Ajin (and other stuff).
