Hell, if the most the enemy has is a couple of HMGs and ancient soviet RPGs, it'll do. I imagine they're mostly using it as an APC and fire platform, like those technicals with AA guns. Probably not meant to spearhead an assault into fortified positions as much as anchoring a foothold against infantry assault.

Also, re: Turkey's missile ambitions, who would it use them on? The only two factions in the middle east with anything worth hitting via missile instead of air strike would be Saudi Arabia and Israel - off the top of my head. Then again, I'm not sure who Turkey is especially belligerent towards, save the Kurds.

We've just launched a new report from the Atlantic Council, Breaking Aleppo, which examines the last months of the battle for Aleppo, and the lengths Russia and Syria went to to win it. The New York Times has a write up on it, and as part of the report we asked Forensic Architecture to review our work and they produced the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CJ-KKLzyBU

They wouldn't need an HMG or an RPG, an AK could swiss cheese that thing, but the HMG was specifically designed to turn armored cars into coffins , and any RPG would penetrate the front and keep going right out the back. I think people still have this weird idea that modern combat is still like a WW2 movie and don't yet understand how horrifically deadly modern weapons are.

It looks to me like its made of 1.5-2cm steel plates. It'll keep you safe from most small arms, but any HMG calibre or even a really old anti-tank weapon will tear it to shreds. I think it's safe to assume that the people actually building/using this tank have a pretty good idea what it's weaknesses are, given that lives depend on it.

This thing has been in an active warzone for almost two years and keeps on ticking in the same war where we've had Leopard IIs crossing the border and the most modern of Russian armor being deployed and get scrap within a week by ATGMs. Whoever built it and runs it, because you know it's probably the same guy, is a testament to modern warfare.

You seem to have this weird idea that an AK has more penetrating power than a WW2 service rifle and heavy machine guns weren't commonplace in World War II, and think you can somehow judge the efficacy of this things armor based on an image from twitter.

This is really interesting reporting. Definitely supports the argument that these hospitals were being deliberately targeted, not that that is particularly controversial.

I'm starting to wonder if Turkey's deliberately playing a game of good cop/bad cop with Assad against the Kurds. Maybe Erdogan's willing to attack Efrin and Manbij, but if he can instead get the YPG to seek Assad's protection and make the SAA responsible for border security again, it seems like a much simpler solution to his problems than trying to occupy another huge chunk of territory outside his borders.

Super narrow and small profile, highly angled armor all around without a flat surface anywhere and highest concentration of millimeters right where the gunner/driver sits. Whoever designed this thing knew what he was doing alright. Are there any specs for this anywhere? It looks like there's only one driver/gunner/commander. Anyone identify the machine gun?
