Eh, one of them lives like two hours away and the other has a kid under two, so it wouldn't out work too well. And I don't want to do karaoke with them because I am shy and an egregiously terrible singer.

Not really. Can't buy your cupcakes or hand drawn tub girl

I think one of them would actually appreciate tubgirl. She has been watching videos of VR porn being made and describing it to me, and it's awesome! (The other lady...not so much.)

You know, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for asking advice from people who have a deeper knowledge of modern Chinese culture than myself; how dare I want to be sure I don't step on any cultural toes? And what a oval office I am for wanting to do something nice for people who I have a great deal of respect for and gratitude towards. I am so, so deeply sorry for trying to be nice. I definitely deserve abuse for that.

I'm sorry Korea isn't my favorite place on earth, Jeoh. I don't spend hours bashing Korea and it rarely comes up in conversation. I kind of don't even think about it anymore, unless I'm chatting with my former students, but apparently my experiences hold a deep and personal meaning for other people who were not involved in any way. I'm sorry that the way I was treated by my place of employment left me with an overall negative feeling towards Korea. Of course, I recently also sort of-complimented Korea by saying that I liked Busan and naming a few things about Busan that I thought were cool, but that must have been from my alter ego? Oh, well. I'm so sorry for all the horrible things I did to you personally, all those times we interacted.

I'm sorry I had a negative experience with someone threatening me and chasing me into traffic, Stringent. I know how hard that must have been for you. I'm sorry that I was frightened by that person's actions. I'm sorry that person was of a different ethnic background than myself. At no point did I even mention the person's actual race, and I never said anything that conflated that race with attacking all women everywhere, but I know that it's common for people to mentally fill in blanks that don't exist. I mean, look at all the stuff Fox News misconstrues! I'm sorry that I personally offended white males who were not involved in any way by foolishly walking through a public place and not wanting to be harassed. I understand what a problem that is for you, and hope that someday you can overcome this deep and hideous tragedy. This dance. This endless waltz. Like a Gundam.

It's okay, you are cool and have always been cool to me. Both of them are actually on my Ignore list, so I didn't see Jeoh's latest nasty comment until you replied. It would be funny if there was any basis in his hatred other than me not liking Korea Sparkling, but as it is the constant bullshit gets a bit tiresome.

I'm sorry if you thought any of that was aimed at you; it totally wasn't and I will still buy you a beer when you're in town.

Jeoh and stringent are big jerks. Don't mind them.

Honestly though it's really hard to gauge "Chinese culture etiquette" because

I'm from Hong Kong, grew up in Canada and am quite westernized and love picking and choosing cultural traditions and even modernizing them. I am a Guangdong city southerner so my norms are kind of different.

Oh and I also am secretly proud of myself to be apex modern Chinese being multi lingual and super social and aware of how weird and fragmented china actually is. North east and north west and coastal shanghai all have different customs history language and norms. And then there are family preferences so it's this hazy cloud of guessing what's good and not.

This is gonna sound cheesy but just go with your heart and if you are true friends cultural barriers can be broken down.

I think that's why there used to be lots of fables and parables dealing with cliches and traditions because we all should question them and see the value of each individual. True social harmony is obtained through resolution and mutual changes.

Thanks, Cabe.

I love your posts because I think you have some of the best awareness of China all over; I just know Chengdu and I feel like I barely do at that!

I do think they'll cut me cultural slack and he happy no matter what; I just wanted to be dead sure I don't offend anyone by accident. I brought artisanal soaps back from Bali for coworkers in Korea once and one woman told me I was implying that she smelled bad by giving her that gift. Not true, all her stank was in her heart!
