Eponymouse posted:I've never heard of Thomas Friedman, so I looked him up and according to his Wikipedia he is a supporter of "radical centrism". Isn't that a contradiction in terms? The thing you have to know about Freidman is that his "radical centrism" makes him highly respected in BosWash policy circles. He's had multiple private meetings to discuss strategy with the last three Presidents. This is because he's perfected the art of parroting the policy consensus using writing that's so bad that nobody can tell he's got no idea what he's talking about. Here's the classic Taibbi takedown. quote:Remember Friedman’s take on Bush’s Iraq policy? “It’s OK to throw out your steering wheel,” he wrote, “as long as you remember you’re driving without one.” Picture that for a minute. Or how about Friedman’s analysis of America’s foreign policy outlook last May: But yeah, your summary of him as a Libertarian who nods at TED talks is spot on.

Taibbi really should be the only person allowed to take down Friedman and it should be an annual ritual like the Raspberry Awards or whatever. Sadly, marriage has softened him up quite a bit.

I don't know about you guys but I personally can't wait until, on the first day of the next president's term, Donald Trump reveals that his experts have discovered that Obama was a citizen all along. He will then peel off his Donald Trump mask to reveal Donald Trump underneath it and then slowly fade from existence, his mission accomplished; content in the knowledge that he successfully trolled everyone on earth as his consciousness slips back into the void from whence it came.

It's like right-wingers know that it's a joke, and it's funny, and that pisses them off to no end that they are being made fun of, so rather than conceding they are wrong (this cannot happen) the only thing remaining in their power is to literally stake out the satirical position with a kind of gleeful, malevolent one-upmanship.

I am at a loss after reading David Brooks' enigmatic op-ed piece detailing the existential dimension of todays Thought Leaders:quote:Little boys and girls in ancient Athens grew up wanting to be philosophers. In Renaissance Florence they dreamed of becoming Humanists. But now a new phrase and a new intellectual paragon has emerged to command our admiration: The Thought Leader. Who would be an example of a "thought leader"? Is this meant to be a critique of a specific person, a specific type of person, a general critique of modernity? And are Brooks' pieces usually this peppered with ennui or is that only a post-ACA rollout thing? the NYT op-ed gallery of rogues are just insufferable. Sounds like David Brooks didn't get invited to the Clinton Global Initiative this year and he's mad. There's definitely a type of person that article is talking about but loving David Brooks (who recently finished teaching a course at Yale titled Humility) is the last person who should be complaining about it. If you want a good parody of the CGI / Davos / Aspen Ideas / TED set, check out Prof. Jeff Jarvis. He's a thinkfluencer.

Thomas Friedman was also the guy who went on Charlie Rose and declared the existence of a terrorism bubble that needed to be popped, by America, and that once we used our stick to pop the bubble we are going to tell the terrorists to "suck on this", in order to justify the Iraq war. A fine moment in American journalism, to be sure.

I have to bring this wonderful response to a deferment extension up to my wonderful state legislature. How exactly is removing aid to secondary education cutting spending if the people you provide loans to cannot pay them back anyway because the job market is terrible and you literally collect nothing from the loan? Maybe I should try to get a call into rush over this and see what sort of moronic mental gymnastics he has to go through to justify it.Fedloan Servicing posted:Over 70% of our borrowers on Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Plans qualify for a monthly payment of $0.00.

I agree with Alex Pareene and think that Brooks column is a result of his being around smart undergrads. It's part him looking at young-uns and part him feeling old and yeah other than "you strive for relevance and as it fades it's replaced by indifference" it doesn't have a discernable thesis.

I knew that but mostly in the bizzaro world context where Africa is the only place that genuinely loves the guy. I don't blame them, and I don't blame him for wanting to hang out there a lot. But yeah Rush, those skilled paintings are setting the incredibly earnest and never sarcastic world of hipsterism on fire. Surely the long attention spans and noted loyalty of that subset will carry him on to the gilded pages of histories most beloved presidents.
