At depth your body also stops feeding your limbs oxygen so as to make sure your brain doesn't starve. It's crazy what freedivers can do.

I thought the old traditional divers carried a bag of rocks or whatever so they could go down and get shellfish or pearls or spearfish and then ditched the bag.

Of course like the above person said if you're at a depth where you have negative buoyancy that's problematic.

Just bring another bigger bag of lava rocks.

Yes, that line had me cracking the gently caress up. Its a shame that they don't understand that anime is animation.

e: the bends is cause by oxygen bubbles in the blood. Deep divers don't really have any oxygen left in them by the time they surface.

Rule of thumb is you can't ascend faster than a bubble of air I think.

So, very carefully.

Nope.

You get the bends from nitrogen bubbles forming in your fluids and expanding as you decompress, blocking capillaries and the like. The nitrogen gets there from you inhaling a fuckton of it over time, while pressurized, which gets more of it into your blood stream than you'd get at surface pressure. When freediving you only bring that one breath's worth of nitrogen with you down, so there's no surplus of it in you that can expand and cause trouble.

E: for some reason these bubbles prefer to form in joints (hence "the bends") but they can and do form anywhere. If they block/bust capillaries in your tissues you get bruises. A bruise in brain tissue ain't good for you, so ascend slowly, and give your lungs time to ventilate the excess nitrogen.

Neat, didn't realize it was nitrogen.

Random anecdote:
When I was learning to dive, one of the things they had us do was ascend from 30ft or so without air.
You exhale the entire way up but your lungs are still full, it feels weird as gently caress.

Oh right, gif thread

Free divers also have sick tricks involving squeezing oxygenated blood from their spleens as a sort of a reservoir, helping them to keep a viable oxygen concentration for a longer time.

Well, that happens because of lack of oxygen and not depth/water pressure otherwise scuba diving would be a lot more challenging. If scuba divers feel pins and needles it's usually while ascending or on the surface and it is not a good thing (secondary symptom for the bends).

Possible, but I think the larger issue at play here is that he's a weaboo that doesn't know how to use swords properly.

Pretty much this.

Here is a YouTube channel of people who do know how to use swords.

Edit: Their videos where the mess up are pretty good.
