It's still cheaper to send 0 texts than to send any number larger than 0, not to mention the effort compiling the list and all the other associated labor costs entailed with administration.

I hate getting political texts period and I always get them from Republicans. The campaign for lady who ran against Patty Murray a few years ago also sent video clips of how Seattle is dying. Either way I block them but it's really annoying to come back to like 4 texts and have a moment of "is something going on?" before finding out it's just politics spam.

One of the best things about being in Los Angeles/CA is that they don't even bother with most national campaigning here, I don't even see much of an uptick in political ads during football (immediately before the election). Now when I watch Iowa games on the Big Ten Network.... good lord. You poor bastards in the swing states.

When I left here in 2010, we had had two consecutive Democratic governors (Tom Vilsack and Chet Culver), we had a reliably Democratic seat in the Senate (Tom Harkin had the seat for 20 years) and we had legalized marriage equality. I came back three years ago. Now we have an utter ghoul in the governor's mansion in the form of Kim Reynolds and two demons in the Senate, the undying Chuck Grassley and the unfathomably evil Joni Ernst. And the second district is represented in Congress by COVID denier Ashley Hinson, who is just dumb as a stump. What happened, Iowa? Timby fucked around with this message at 00:37 on Jan 30, 2024 |

There are likely fewer automated texts/mass messages going out than you'd imagine. Over the past year for both toll free usage and to avoid carriers blocking for spam, there was registration and validation of use cases that tooling required. Not particularly high bars, but bars that didn't exist before. Most political texts I get come from volunteers using their own devices or possible provided devices. I fell into a hole of forgotten tv show intros and I just need to post this one that is very clearly ripping off Freaky Friday. I get why the guy did it, he had nothing really going on, but Sharon Gless had skins on the wall. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOGW2Cku5AA This is from the great year of 1979, when NBC greenlit everything they could get their hands on and premiered and killed a couple dozen shows including 3 separate Animal House ripoffs, Delta House (official), Brothers & Sisters and Co-Ed Fever, which was mercy-flushed after 1 episode because... jesus just watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhnSvmLOd3Y

Not saying it’s the worst part of that opening sequence by any stretch, but trying to rhyme “quarter” with “daughter” and not even having the decency to fake a Philadelphia accent is pretty irksome

I have been informed that The Models say that Detroit going on fourth twice and not kicking field goals which would have represented the difference in the game actually maximized win percentage and was thus optimal, despite the outcome. Although I find that surprising, I am not a mathematician and thus am nobody to argue with The Models. I hereby retract my derisive comments about Dan Campbell and wish him the best of luck coaching by flow chart for many years to come. Am I being facetious? I haven’t decided yet.

I only get the rare piece of spam (usually trying to trick me into “checking the status of a package”). It’s nice to live in a country where you aren’t allowed to contact voters by text message. Or TV ads, now that I think of it. These things are why I told my friend he was crazy when he suggested the vans with loudspeakers that are allowed here were more annoying. Nah man, they drive on by. I think he underestimated how bad it’s gotten in the U.S.

I do not open the PDFs of course and just check my account now and then to make sure nothing's going wrong. No damage done, but it's annoying and shows up in my inbox instead of spam.

I know this is pipe dream stuff, but the only way I see state hood happening for Guam, or any of the other Pacific Ocean territories, is them joining Hawaii. Even if they combined Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands into one state, you're still only looking at like 250,000 people total, less than half of Wyoming, and separated by 1,000 miles of ocean.

Stephen Bochco sighting there. Strange seeing his name on something that's not a police procedural. And yeah NBC in the late 70s flailed hard. They had SNL and that was about it. They lost a bunch of affiliates to ABC and then when the US pulled out of the 1980 Olympics they nearly went under. They got saved when they pulled in a bunch of folks from Mary Tyler Moore's studio, including Stephen Bochco. dirty shrimp money fucked around with this message at 16:08 on Jan 30, 2024 |
