Yes.
So, in addition to Havukruunu, I've also lately been really digging Mgla's Exercises in Futility. And I was wondering if some kind metal goons could point me towards some more black metal in a similar vein. Meaning relatively straightforward no-nonsense stuff with a bit of atmosphere, possibly some tasty riffs, and decent production instead of some lovely UG kvlt sound.

fake edit: After a bit of digging into Youtube's related videos list, Uada also seems like a pretty good example of what I'm after.

There's a lot of black metal that doesn't sound like it was recorded at the bottom of a well with a wire recorder. I've always been a huge Lord Belial fan but they're not quite as bleak as MGLA:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqOAGNmIA60

Drudkh is pretty bleak and they're great:

If you ever get the chance to see Fleshgod Apocalypse live you totally should do it. They're loving awesome live.

Also, they sound better live. Their albums sound great but are a bit of an incomprehensible mess. Since you can't hear *every* note live, it's a lot easier to listen to. They actually DO have different melodies sometimes! I always respected them, but after seeing them live, I dig 'em now.

Plus it's fun in a 14-year-old-angry-at-my-Dad sorta way to tell people: "Dude! I'm seeing Fleshgod Apocalypse!" and watch non-metal people go: "The gently caress?!"

...It's the small things in life sometimes.

Yeah, Fleshgod are pretty awesome live. The only thing I would say is that the piano is always a little low in the mix, and the guy looks like he's working so hard on it, sweeping up and down. I was near the front when they played in London so he was just a few feet away from me, so I could hear him plinking away and it sounded great.

Ridiculous name, but I do like their style. Drummer is amazing.

I can never hate Fleshgod Apocalypse because they 100% nail what they're trying to do. It's pretty loving great. Bombastic and dramatic, barely a hint of humor. They own it when a lot of bands would try to be ironic and show how self aware they are.

Yeah I managed to forget about that somehow, eventhough I just posted there about Havukruunu not long ago.

Anyways, thanks for the recs, y'all. Some decent stuff there though nothing that immediately whisked me away yet. Drudkh and Lord Belial are pretty good. Uada would've been a great suggestion if I hadn't said I know of them already. :v: Wiegedood is a bit too harsh for my taste. 7 Peles is kinda cool but not quite what I'm after.

There's also John Haughm's new band Pillorian, which is really good but I'm looking for more straightforward stuff without so many slow Agalloch-y bits in it. Just simple, slightly melodic black metal, more pagan than satan though not straight-up viking poo poo. There's just something about the examples I mentioned that makes them feel easily approachable to me eventhough I'm not that much into black metal overall.

I guess I should just go browse some Youtube channels like Black Metal Promotion and labels like Eisenwald and Season of Mist, rather than bugging you guys with my whimsical preferences.

Or then I'll just listen to Havukruunu forever because god drat.

Yeah, I wish I could make myself like this kind of production, because those songs under that low-fi haze seem really drat good. I can appreciate some rawness and grit in a sound, but not quite to that extent.

I think I'm gonna take a break from this black metal odyssey now and cleanse my palate with some Gamma Ray or something. :v:

If you want super modern stuff with good old-fashioned lyrics about nukes and poo poo, try Fog of War. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUvlS9jANIA

If you want your thrash with sick semi-melodic leads and lyrics about Satan and random death, my favorite thrash album of 2016, Lethal Shock's Evil Aggressor, is a must. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMbNsNHH0VM

I backed Havok's kickstarter on this one. I think they try some different musical approaches on it which is cool--they're not going to blow anyone's minds, but they bring something slightly different to the table. The lyrics aren't anything as bad as their last album in terms of alt-rightism.
