Nuclear Spoon posted:so is this just a regular 3-line whip or is it like Hyper 3-Line Omae Wa Mou Shinderu Whip A normal three-line whip is basically "you are expected to attend the vote and vote with the government and there may be consequences if you don't". In recent times there haven't usually been any consequences unless you're a front-bencher. Outright saying in advance of the vote that you'll lose the whip is definitely serious poo poo. Saying you'll be deselected is holy-poo poo-balls-nuclear-option, since it's essentially ending political careers over a single vote. It's as far from normal as you can get. It's also infuriatingly ironic considering how frequently Labour was accused of 'Stalinist purges'. It's hard to see how it's not all bluster though. If they ended up deselecting a dozen or more candidates, some in high-profile seats, right before a snap election then who's going to replace them? It takes time to find new candidates. https://twitter.com/jessicaelgot/status/1168271540573659136

So, what is cumbag's plan here? If the tories rebel (lol) the government loses the brexit vote. The rebel lose their whip. The government loses it majority and thus control leading to a GE. GE comes and those rebels lose their seats. But where is the real threat? Where is the real downside for the rebels?

I think a lot of these actions make more sense if you imagine the motivation is to lose a VONC on purpose. If you know you can't deliver brexit without a larger tory majority, you need to have an election. But the tactic most likely to fire up your voters is if the remain forces in parliament are seen to be subverting the Will of the People, and just straight up calling an election doesn't do that. Trying arcane tactics and bald-faced threats to force a NDB shows your voters you're trying anything to pull off their mad suicidal dream for them, while virtually assuring you get VONCed.

Thinking how funny it would be for the Tories to withdraw the whip from MPs who vote against them and thus withdraw any reason for them not to support Corbyn; in fact, if they VONC Johnson these MPs could then vote confidence in Corbyn knowing that the FTPA will keep them in office for up to another 3 years.

So it's actually a few higher but still single digits.

Niric posted:Re the podcast, good job guys, look forward to the next one. Would it be possible to keep it shorter though? Not that your dulcet tones get grating, but honestly unless it's super in depth anything over an hour (or even 45 mins) tends to be pretty baggy and self indulgent. I mean, the gold standard of smart and interesting people talking about a complex thing, in our time, clocks in at less than an hour even in the extended podcast cuts. Also, as a point of praxis for your audience, going beyond 50 mins or so makes it harder to fit into a commute We’re aiming for an hour with an absolute maximum runtime of an hour and a half, typically mirroring the other typical podcast lengths in the same field a la Trashfuture, WDTATW and Reel Politik, but if the masses scream out for a length reduction we’d be open to trying it out. Sarcastic reply: just listen to it on the way to work and the way back Bobby Deluxe posted:Podcast content was good, and I'm looking forward to the next one. Could use some extra editing, like getting everyone to sync the start of recording with a set tone, which makes it easier to line up (one person seemed to be delayed a bit judging by the delay between their jokes and the laughter), and the volume was spiking hard one one person's audio, so could have done with some high end clipping. We did a sync, but it’s possible one of us clapped on 1 rather than after 1 lol, I’ll add it to the list of pre show checks. I’ve got a possible solution to that spiking and hopefully I can get it successfully implemented for the next episode! I’m glad you enjoyed it

Any Tory MP who has the whip withdrawn will have to very quickly raise a bunch of money to have a chance of retaining their seat in the event of a General Election. Something they won't be able to do, because CCHQ appears to keep a very tight grip on the purse strings of donors (also a bunch of Tory donors have stopped giving to what is clearly a suicide pact). If the Tory MP acorn doesn't fall too far from the Johnson tree, then we're looking at a bunch of people who have spent their lives wanting to be MPs. In which case, is it worth more to them to demonstrate that they have the courage to stand for what they believe in, or to demonstrate that they have the loyalty to go with whatever their boss tells them to do. Because one of those things pays (relatively) well in the medium term, while the other pays indisputably well in the long term.

It's a pretty bold move to be threatening to deselect people when your majority is one. Even though it's actually a little higher thanks to the one pervert that actually saw minor consequences and Hoey, Stringer, and Mann, that's a hell of a die roll. I'm not sure if Tories in Remain seats are going to appreciate being threatened this way, and if it was most people, I imagine the response would be either "Go on then" or "gently caress you, I'm DEFINITELY voting against you now!" And if someone does break ranks Boris has to either go through and deslect, meaning the government doesn't have a notional majority anymore, or not, and look (even more) pathetic.
