I can't speak for the English localization, but at least in German he just goes for an over-the-top old skool gentleman shtick with free compliments and my lady's, and doesn't ever directly hit on her. Of course, it could also always be goons being goons and exaggerating and oversexualizing everything.

I thought it was kinda cute and funny, really, I was just kinda weirded out at someone finding a tonberry attractive - the tiny green lizard people described as having slimy, rubbery hides.

So as a newer player, how do I start gearing up my crafting/gathering classes? I just hit 70 on Miner, Botanist is at 62 and I'v got 5 crafters in the mid-60s. I'm planning on capping everything eventually. Is "endgame" gear for these classes crafted or bought with a special currency like scrips? Do I need to get an intermediate set of gear before I get a final set?

That dude is the nerdiest nerd that ever nerded out over the people of Nym. Have you SEEN his glasses? Just the fact that he can actually tell tonberries' gender apart should tell you he's on a whole other level. He lives for this. Dude is like an eleven year old dinosaur fan that won a trip to Jurassic Park. Of course he's gonna go ham over anything pertaining to his hobby to anyone nearby, and extolling the virtues of tonberry dames to his ignorant and, frankly, criminally blind compatriots is to be expected.

You COULD get an i290 crafter set and with the right melds and food, try to craft yourself your own ala mhigan crafter gear (which is currently BiS). That's not a very good idea though. Since it's kinda old by now and due to the influx of returning players for patch 4.2, Ala Mhigan left side gear should be pretty affordable by now, so i'd avise you to just buy it off the Market Board, if you don't have someone to craft it for you. The tools might be pretty expensive still, especially if you need to buy them for like 10 classes, but you can mostly do with Molybdenum tools or your classes' equivalent. If you have someone to craft stuff for you, do custom deliveries for yellow crafter scrip and buy Gyr Abanian Alchemic. That's what you need a lot of for high end crafter/gatherer stuff (11 for a crafter/gatherer left side gear, and 3 per main hand tool).

I actually put the SB finale on hold for a little while to try and complete the tank set before doing Ala Mhigo, but it never worked out.

Sea Wolves arrived to Vylbrand 7 centuries ago, Nymian civilization is much older (and it was destroyed cca 15 centuries ago) and Vylbrand is also home of Plainsfolk Lalas.

You can buy gear for scrip. It's slightly better than unmelded crafted gear, and a lot worse than melded crafted gear. Since high-level recipes are balanced around fully melded crafted gear, there's no point in buying the scrip equipment unless you're completely gil-broke but scrip-rich. The only thing where you might consider buying a scrip item are the tools; they're also worse than a melded crafted tool, but for your non-specialist classes it might be reasonable, if you never intend to make the current end-game gear.

E: The crafted gear also has the advantage of being shared across all crafters, unlike the scrip stuff.

How much is a set of the crafted gear going to run? How often do they put out new crafter gear? I'm kinda worried I'll dump a ton of gil on crafting gear only to lose interest before making my money back / better gear gets put out.

Also, whats a good way to choose specialties? I picked WVR specialty awhile back since i figured it'd be good since I mostly play casters - but thinking about it now I'm rarely bothering with crafted DoW gear since tomestone or raid gear is rarely hard to get. WVR still seems like it might decent for making your own DoL/H gear though - is there anything I should pair with it?

In a nutshell:

Check the NPCs in Rhalgr's or Idylshire to see what items they want for script turn-ins today
Toggle on your Collectors Glove ability. (Glove is the gatherer skill name, crafters have something similar as a level 50 skill though)
Craft the things normally, using your +quality skills to improve collectablity
Turn the thing in to the NPCs for scrip

The only way to get yellow scrip is from level 70 turn-ins. You can also get them from custom deliveries to Zhloe and M'naago though again only as a level 70.

Oh wait that Chocobo raincoat is from gathering scrip isn't it? I guess I'd forgotten!

Gatherers can get scrip too, but unlike crafters they have to use a different skill rotation to make it work. The part about checking NPCs to see what they want today (or this week, for Zhloe and M'naago) is the same. After that you'll want to use something like this to plan to skill rotation to get enough collectablity from your gathered item:

https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/character/8444495/blog/2596906/

Note that when gathering from non-legendary you only want to use the ones with +1 or more gathering attempts. Also bring lots of hi-cordial if you don't want to spend all day waiting for gp to regenerate.

Fishing is (unsurprisingly) almost entirely random as far as what collectablity you get from any given catch. Check the npc to see the threshold for collectablity to receive the best reward, then throw away any that are too small. This threshold is a little higher than the baseline for an HQ fish, so you basically want to use Patience and the special hookset skills to get as many HQs as possible. Even then, check each one because it's possible to HQ but still not have the fish be quite big enough for the best reward.
