As others have said Stoner Witch is a great place to start with the Melvins and Gluey Porch Treatments is top-tier "My War B-side" early sludge. I also really dig Bullhead and Lysol if you're looking to expand to some of their other sound a bit.

Their new album with two bassists is really cool too, though it got mixed reviews.

Melvins+two bassists=magic, for some reason, they really hit a winning streak with the Big Business records

I don’t quite have the order down but I’m pretty sure my top 10 of the year looks like this. I know you were all clamoring for it:

1. Thou - Magus
2. Sleep - The Sciences
3. Tomb Mold - Manor of Infinite Forms
---
Burial Invocation - Abiogenesis
Horrendous - Idol
Augury - Illusive Golden Age
Sigh - Heir to Despair
Cult Leader - A Patient Man
Slugdge - Esoteric Malacology
Khemmis - Desolation

Honorable mentions:
Obliteration - Cenotaph Obscure
Mutilation Rites - Chasm
Un - Sentiment

Extremely good year, especially compared to 2017, where my AOTY (Apostate Viaticum) would be toward the bottom of this year’s top 10.

I've missed a lot of stuff this year. I don't know about favorite anythings because I've barely gotten to listen to any of these albums all the way through, but here's a few cool things I listened to this week

The name of this band turned me off at first, but this is some of the most instantly impressive prog-death I've heard in years. Riff-driven. Lots of killer solos. No meedly-meedly Gorod poo poo. You'll probably dig this if you like early Atheist or stuff like Children.

Not entirely sure what to compare this to, but it sort of sounds to me like if Blackie from Root and Cales was the guitarist for Saor's Aura album

If you like Thulcandra/Sacramentum/Dissection but also the latest Arsis record, this is pro-click

These guys do a good pastiche of mid-career Opeth and Xanthochroid

This song just wants you to go gently caress yourself

I'm too out of the loop on US black metal to know what to compare this to, but it's cool

More Gilead stuff out of NY

This Scorched album has been discussed a few times in here but I'm just getting around to hearing it so here you go again

I'll check the rest of that list out later, but this stood out to me because I've been listening to it myself and it owns.
Part of me wants to think the album could do with a bit fewer/shorter movie samples, but then one of them is Ernest Borgnine telling some fresh recruit how to kill dudes with a spade, and I can't in good conscience criticize that.

Yessssss, def going to the Raleigh show, Yob was show of the year for me in 2018, and one of the top albums for me too, and Mike was super cool to talk to.

I didn't end up finding any of the goons there, but I ran into the huge guy that horse collard a douche who moshed into some women at the start of the show. I originally thought he worked there, but when I ran into him at a bar after the show he was just there for bellwitch, and said "who the gently caress moshes at a show like this" and policed the front by himself. I bought him a beer and talked his ear off and probably annoyed him. Who will be hiding in Ral April??

Don’t mind me posting this here but the rest of nmd sucks and is bad and there’s surely some crossover. What happened to the neofolk/martial industrial thread? It’s hard to dodge the nazis and the people who think david tibet is nazi but I want to find some new stuff. The new Current 93 is really good.

I did somehow miss out on Die Ęsthetik der Herrschaftsfreiheit. An album a lot of people seem to think is one of the best of the genre and Rome has been one of my favorite bands for 10+ years. Oops. Getting on that asap.

I don’t know about the thread but I’m always down to find some more ambiguously fascistic acoustic jams. Especially when they dress for duty at the deathcamp but get all flustered by people saying they might be right wing.

I’ll check out that new C93 and Die Ęsthetik, thanks.

That thread died from lack of posts I think.

Die Aesthetik is probably Rome's best album (albums?) But I definitely slept on it when it came out, probably because the 3 albums in one release thing annoyed me at the time. I have high hopes for the upcoming Rome album because he's billed it as a return to his older material which is good because I think Hall of Thatch sucked.

Fun Shoe
For Christmas I got Metallica's AJFA box set.

I'm a very happy little fanboy. That being said, the remastered mix is fairly loving great if you're listening to it NOT on Youtube. There's a bit more dynamics, a bit more space. They've boosted the sub bass frequencies so now most of the kick drums give a big "woomph" and I think they've added some low mids to the mixes overall. The reverb on James' voice is a bit more obvious, but it's still pretty tasteful and not RTL style.

NOTE:

I am a tragic fanboy so this could be placebo.

But I'm happy as a pig in poo poo so whatever :)
