Puroresu is a whole 'nother kettle of fish if you're comparing it to the X-Division. Samoa Joe in ROH wrestles a very puro-based style, and in TNA he's still puroesque. Other X-Division types are in the US indy mold which often has moves derived from puro, but the psychology is totally different.

Some puro linkage...

New Japan was at the Tokyo Dome for the last time (ever?), drawing a half-full house with probably a ton of free ticket giveaways. Main event was Lesnar retaining the IWGP title over Nakamura, meaning that Brock and NJ feel secure in the current legal wranglings. Other results included Shibata over Tanahashi, Chono & Tenzan retaining the tag titles over Omori & Koshinaka, and Albert/A-Train beating Nakanishi.

Meanwhile here's the GHC junior tag champs gettin' a piece. Oh Japan I love you.

Good stuff as usual, Ditch. Have any better pictures of the hairless A-Train/Bernard surfaced yet? I've only seen one where he's pretty much obstructed by his clothes, but you can still tell he's going to look totally different.

The Dragon Gate stuff from 27th December is well worth getting hold of, by the way. The Japanese crowd loved Jack and Roderick, CIMA and The Florida Brothers brought the awesomeness as usual, and there was a crazy 8 man tag that was also well worth watching. Can't wait to see the Brock stuff next.
-New Japan pics are hard to come by but I'm sure we'll get good shots of Albertrain.
-You mean the 26th? That's the one with an 8-man tag that's going around. I just watched Hulk vs Takagi and it's sooooooooooo much better than any prior Hulk stuff. Takagi rules.

So yeah, looks like I'm actually getting back into wrestling a bit now, so give me recommendations and whatnot. I'm still trying to get my hands on Hidaka/Fujita vs. KENTA/Marufuji, and I really want to see that one.
New Japan after the G-1 '04 tournament is decidedly missable. NOAH has been rocking consistently since Kobashi's return in late '02, there are many many NOAH shows worth getting so it depends on how far back you're interested. Also the two interpromotional Differ Cup tourneys from '03 and '05, the '02-'04 G-1 tourneys were solid, Dragon Gate's big shows over the last year tend to pay off... you can blow a ton of money. If you're looking for a more narrow selection that's a different story.

Boco_T posted:

I also watched the Florida Brothers match from that show but it was kinda lame. I mean the Florida Brothers were pretty entertaining and I could tell it was a comedy match but I didn't like it that much. I suspect it was because Vangelis seemed quite stupid.
Vangelis is total rear end and there's something to do with Nazis?! And they brought him back?!?! :psyduck:

English is very prevalent in Japan, ESPECIALLY in pro wrestling. It was a US import and the Japanese have always had to be able to communicate with Americans. Many prominent US wrestlers in Japan could barely speak a lick of Japanese and vice-versa, but they can work a match with little difficulty.

Not really, there's too much stuff. Plus VHS is going the way of the dino and cheap DVD places are all OVER the place.

One of my goals is to create a catalog of great All Japan matches and if humanly possible put all of said matches online through the various free hosting services for files/video. First I have to actually watch all of 'em!

I plan on doing write-ups (NOT recaps  ) of some under-pimped but still fantastic All Japan matches as the year progresses. Everyone into puro knows about Misawa vs Kawada 6/3/94, and it's been written about everywhere. But the 50th best All Japan match from the '90s is still plenty good enough to be a MOTYC now, let alone the '60s-'80s which also produced many a classic.

I've heard the 7/10/04 NOAH show is great (it had Kobashi vs. Akiyama which was rated (&#^*%@^$) in Figure Four Weekly). What do you think about the entire show?
I think Kobashi vs Akiyama and vs Sasaki are overrated in much the same way as a lot of things that wind up MOTYCs in big year-end polls, but it's still a hell of a battle. You add in the Misawa vs Mutoh tag match which was fun, the KENTAFuji tag which had a nice finish, the spotty but potentially likeable Liger vs Kanemaru match, a several decent undercard tags and it's a more than solid pro wrestling card. To say nothing of historical value. As far as '04 goes I'd take the 4/25 and 9/10 Budokan shows first, but hey, for a major show the 7/10 dome show is shockingly good from a stand-alone perspective. Hardly any of it was based on past encounters.

I think that perhaps the best place to start with NOAH is 2/17/02. Kobashi's first attempt at a return after his big injury, in a dandy tag with Misawa vs Akiyama & Nagata. Even better is the first-ever New Japan vs NOAH juniors match as Liger and Kikuchi TEAR poo poo UP, and there's some fine undercard goodness underneath. That sets up the Nagata vs NOAH matches, Liger vs NOAH, and also gives some good looks at the midcarders. Here, I'll do a top shows rundown.

2002:
-2/17
-New Japan 8/28 (several great New Japan vs NOAH matches)
-9/23
-October tape that has the Sternness vs Burning Captain's Fall match and Akiyama/Kanemaru vs Kobashi/Shiga
-12/7

2003:
-1/10
-3/1
-4/13
-6/6
-7/16
-9/12
-11/1

2004:
-1/10
-3/6
-4/25
-7/10
-9/10

2005:
-7/18
-8/19
-9/18
-11/5
-12/4

And of course there are plenty of good in-betweens, but that gives the best mix of important and high-quality goodness.

edit: I'll expand on those shows as needed. Meanwhile enjoy this pic of the retiring Haruka Eigen http://ca1n.c.yimg.jp/sports/sn2006011123502800029975m/sportsnavi.yahoo.co.jp/fight/pict/200601/im00029975.jpg

Expanding on Monster Zero, Gedo & Jado were indy guys focused on FMW (which led to an ECW match with the Impact Players) before moving to New Japan about 4-5 years ago. Jado has held the IWGP junior title briefly and Gedo was in last year's Best of the Super Juniors final. Both are way better than they were ten years ago.

As far as New Japan/WCW, you've got Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi (Kurosawa in WCW), Liger, Iizuka, Kanemoto, Tenzan and maybe some that I'm missing who are still in New Japan, plus Otani and Ultimo Dragon who wrestle elsewhere. Tokyo Magnum/Magnum Tokyo is a mainstay for Dragon Gate. Kaz Hayashi is fairly important in All Japan, and Mutoh books it. That's all the names I can recall at the moment.

I'll try to mix these up but expect mostly All Japan '90s matches.

Random Overlooked Puro Match #1

Mitsuharu Misawa vs Terry Gordy, 6/1/91

Background: Misawa wasn't the top native, Gordy wasn't the top gaijin, but both were probably #2 in those respective positions. Though Misawa had managed an upset pin on Jumbo a year earlier he didn't have much to show for it in-between, with losses to Jumbo and Hansen. Gordy had two brief Triple Crown reigns a year earlier in the biggest singles wins of his career. Either man could win this one, but it would mean more for Misawa.

Story of the match: It's about Misawa and whether he can down a big double-tough whitey. Jumbo was the size of Gordy, Hansen and Dr Death so it was never a surprise when he won. What makes the match all the better is that Misawa wrestles like a heavyweight instead of a bulked-up junior heavyweight so he's fighting against the grain. He takes it right to Gordy with his patented elbows and their exchanges leave you guessing as to who'll come out on top because Misawa is a high-quality striker but Gordy is a powerhouse. Gordy sells like a champ and is a criminally overlooked US power guy, with good-looking shitkicker offense and sound fundamentals. Can Misawa avoid/survive the lariat, DDT and powerbomb which Gordy has won big matches with in the past? Can he pull off his big moves?

Things to pay attention to: The announcers put over Misawa's facelock hold, which at the time was a finisher and helped to play off of Misawa's elbows (to the face). They also put over the German suplex hold, which IIRC he pinned Gordy with in a lead-in tag. The finish of the match was a big one for establishing the move as a finisher, one which relies on an opponent being worn down enough to cause the knockout. Finishing stretch is well put-together and dramatic, paying off the overall give-and-take of the bout. Both men look tough at the end because they lay it all out there. Great crowd heat too.

Meltzer gave the match ***1/2, but I'd say it's closer to **** and it's certainly better than many matches he throws ****+ at today.

Random Overlooked Puro #2

I just watched a really dandy deathmatch that would take anyone's mind away from Tiger Jeet Singh.

Peeps ITT probably know of a mister Necro Butcher. He of the utter craziness and taking of beatings. Well, I don't think he's the best deathmatch guy out there today. No, that title rightfully belongs to someone who you'd never expect: a gimmick imitator.

http://www.wkmedia.net/jhw4/sourcepictures/Heavy3%20copy.jpg

The man getting carved up is Abdullah Jr. Kobayashi, a Japanese Abdullah the Butcher. Only instead of 1/2* matches involving a fork, it's much better matches involving dozens of light tubes and full-body bleeding from said tubes. Working out of Big Japan, Abby Jr has been in three of my favorite deathmatches ever.

The first was from December '03 against Ryuji Ito (the carver in the pic above), a 200 Light Tube deathmatch that managed to use logical build and solid pacing to keep the momentum going from spot to spot. And oh lord when it's 200 light tubes you know it's gonna be a lot of sick spots. They take what would be a pretty decent match and toss in light tubes to add to the moves, leading to some great nearfalls and dramatic set-ups.

Then came a match in November '05 against Daisuke Sekimoto, a thick motherfucker who's strong as hell. A mere 100 light tubes for this one. Sekimoto methodically worked Abby Jr over with the tubes, including repeated bodyslams onto them. Then came the stiff as five motherfuckers clubbing blows to the back and I swear you will mark out for *clubbing blows to the back in a deathmatch*. Then he starts unloading his set of traditional Japanese finishers on a horribly bloody Kobayashi, who refuses to stay down. Kobayashi makes the comeback and while Sekimoto doesn't take much punishment relative to the fat boy he still takes a ton.

Final match, which I just watched, is a December 21 '05 rematch of Kobayashi vs Ito. This was a (100? 200?) light tube scaffold deathmatch, where a shockingly sturdy brudge was made high above the ring between two big ladders. Combining the kind of spots seen in their first match with a couple monster bumps off the scaffold, they were able to play off of both of the above bouts and the finish has some stellar nearfalls. This match got a crowd bigger than any Zero-One drew that year, 3500.

It's hard to describe what he brings to the table. There's a certain Sabu-esque 'gently caress it' attitude, there's his willingness to get covered in viscera (the actual word not the black man), there's the sense that he has some idea where things are going. Abby Kobayashi is well worth checking out if you can stomach some of the craziest deathmatches ever.

NEWS!

Akebono has been added to the latest NOAH card, as he and Rikio take on Kobashi and Izumida. IZU~

WWE and Lesnar continue to dish it out, this time over a planned apperance on New Japan's 2/19 Sumo Hall show. I think this could at long last be the climax because the judge has adopted a 'bring it on' attitude towards WWE and they have plenty of time to make the best case possible (unlike when they tried to Brock-block before the 1/4 show).

Several New Japan wrestlers are unhappy with their latest contract offers but it's possible none of them would get better money elsewhere. Kakihara might have to retire with a neck injury.

What are the best resources to use for following present day puro?

Are Japanese workers inherently more talented than American workers? What gives?

Who were the ten best puro workers in 2005?
Way to take a lot of things out of context.

Puro is an inherently different style, as is lucha. Most people who watch a lot of wrestling from a lot of places tend to view puro as better hour-for-hour than WWE because it's a lot more wrestling-based and much less restricted.

Now that's not to say that ALL puro is awesome. Most people focus on the GOOD puro, and at times that puro is filtered down. For instance I'm someone who watches everything, but I then only pimp specific things because plenty of it is boring or hard to enjoy for most.

There have been plenty of crappy wrestlers in Japan, be they Japanese or American. Albert was hardly the worst big-man in US history, I always enjoyed him more than the Heidenreichs and Masters of the world and he does even better in Japan. But he's still nothing worth going out of the way for. As kaos said he has a job because big American guys are the exception rather than the norm, and Albert is pretty much the biggest guy around in Japan (no Big Show over there). Plus he's fairly cheap so he has a job. But the Japanese don't go nuts for him.

Me rattling off names wouldn't mean anything. I might enjoy the work of KENTA and Go Shiozaki and Makoto Hashi and Kensuke Sasaki and the Florida Brothers, you might not. Which is why I tend to recommend certain shows from certain promotions. For instance...

-New Japan's 2004 G-1 Climax tournament. Solid matches in the Japanese style that tell stories based on each wrestler's style. Shows off some of the variety you don't get in a rather cookie-cutter fed like WWE.
-NOAH's July '04 and July '05 Tokyo Dome shows. Good variety, good matches by pretty much everyone's estimation.
-Dragon Gate 1/14/05. A very easy to enjoy fed, and this show combines storylines with some dynamite action.
-All Japan 7/26/05. I haven't seen all of it but I'm told this was their show of the year. Some big matches and a good look at what they can bring to the table.

That's just present-day of course. The best puro came from the '90s.

I watch a lot of wrestling. A LOT of wrestling. Week in, week out, for years. Ever since I graduated from college (May '03) I've hardly watched any WWE, mostly just the pimped stuff. And I'm a lot happier for it and I have more than I can watch thanks to the internet. Between old-school and current day, US majors and indies and Japan, there's enough in the way of great matches and storylines and feuds that I feel fine not tearing my hair out over crappy Sports Entertainment segments in-between cookie-cutter punchfests. Now that's not to say I think ill of those who watch and enjoy WWE, merely that I'm of the opinion that 4 hours a week watching it can just as easily be spent on other wrestling.

NOAH ran the Nippon Budokan today, claiming a sell-out though they might not have. Main results included the team of Akebono & Rikio winning with a stacked splash, Team Misawa beating Team Sasaki, KENTA defending the junior title over Marufuji, and Akiyama winning the heavyweight title from Taue.

The stacked splash, which I can only begin to describe how little I'd like to be on the receiving end of:

I don't think it's funny :( They were one of the top promotions in the world not a year and a half ago from an in-ring standpoint, and now they're utterly missable. The 2004 G-1 was so good, as were '02 and '03, and of the guys in those tournaments there's no Takayama, Minoru Suzuki, Nishimura, Yoshie, Shibata, Sasaki, Akiyama, Tenryu, Blue Wolf and maybe Kanemoto. I'll take that crew over Tenzan, Chono, Nagata, Nakanishi, Nakamura, Tanahashi and Makabe any day of the week.

Bless YouTube forever. I just watched Takehiro Murahama & Jushin "Thunder" Lyger vs Naomichi Marufuji & KENTA from the 2003 GHC Jr. Tag Team Title Tourney Final and thought it was an incredible match with fantastic action, striking and near falls that made me think the match was over, and I knew exactly how the match ended already.
That match was  and they did a better job keeping it interesting than a lot of the latter KENTAFuji matches.

That match is all about Hashimoto being awesome. Focused offense, great selling, and he never shrugged off the injury. For most of their careers Kawada was way better night after night, but there it wasn't even close in favor of Hash.

RIP :911:

Well that's just volume 1 silly ;-* And you're dealing with some long-rear end bouts.

That volume is only matches which received a decent amount of praise. I'd say half of them are overrated but then I'm pickier than most. Disc 2 is solidly better but disc 1 has more important matches. Put another way, everything there is good and/or significant.

Honestly though, I'd say watch the 7/18, 8/19, 9/18, 11/5 and 12/4 NOAH shows, plus 1/14 Dragon Gate and suppliment liberally with downloads. So much of the rest is just missable.

Nobody liked it. Literally nobody. The other Lesnar matches haven't been much better.

Why must you suck now Brock

In other news, NOAH is more interested in the US. After the response they got in ROH and having seen the sales of pirated DVDs online (!!!) they're looking into how to capture the market and enforce copyright laws (!!!!!!!!!). KENTA, Marufuji and Kobashi now have visas that would allow for longer/more trips to the US.

So that's a mixed bag. In Japan DVDs are crazy expensive.

I'm honestly baffled. NJ and TNA was supposed to be the next big thing (lol block resna, WWE and NJ are going at it over the IWGP champ, lord knows NJ talent is useless in WWE... maybe they want to co-promote in Japan because both are struggling?

Today's PuroPulse won't cover it because I'm flat-footed on the subject.

Meanwhile I love this pic
