I think there's symbolic value to it being a New Japan (co-promoted admittedly) show in MSG; that automatically by itself put it on a lot of people's lists and the New Japan side of it being good meant that it didn't fall - sure the ROH section of that show wasn't good but that really didn't matter. That was also used as a justification for why a lot of people supported Mayu Iwatani as women's wrestler of the year in the Tokyo Sports awards even though her match with Kelly Klein wasn't very good: the value there wasn't in the match but was in a Japanese woman signed with a major Joshi promotion working a major title match in Madison Square Garden followed by working the Tokyo Dome in the same year.

These awards in particular though really show what audience is the most "online" and most likely to vote in wrestling awards like this. That explains things like NOAH doing very well in lots of this - although you can't really argue against NOAH placing high in a lot of these awards with the 2019 they had - and why AEW and NXT placed at all on the list despite being promotions (sub-promotion in the case of NXT I guess) that don't run Japan or even air regularly in Japan. The people voting for them are the equivalent to people like me that'll vote for SEAdLINNNG or whoever in US-based wrestling awards.

You know it's not Western smarks because Lulu Pencil doesn't appear at all.

Is Wrestle Princess accessible to someone who hasn't seen a lick of TJPW?

TJPW is mostly character based rather than storyline orientated. So you should be alright.

The only match that really relies on previous knowledge and Japanese is Hyper Misao vs. Saki Aki

but most of it is covered in this legendary video that convinced me that TJPW was worth watching

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0FY2UHIhWc

the live translation thread should be useful as well

edit:
There's an alright preview video from the same guy above, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4s9DkB2GhVE

I guess Dominion 6.9 is definitely a show I should check out since apparently that features a "7 star" match from Kenny Omega, but what other shows should I absolutely check out from the past 5 years or so? Doesn't have to be NJPW only, either.

The entire Omega/Okada series is worth watching because the 7 star match builds on what came before it.

You can find Omega vs. Okada 1 https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x59kcwf

I also stole a list of every relevant match from reddit, if you want to find things on the net or on NJPW world:

quote:

G1 Climax 2016 Final - Kenny Omega vs Hirooki Goto

King Of Pro Wrestling - After Okada vs Marufuji , Kenny and Okada face off , officially setting up their match at Wrestle Kingdom 11

Road To Tokyo Dome 2016 -Bad Luck Fale and Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada and YOSHI-HASHI . The final preview tag before the Dome and a post match angle that sees the Cleaner give the champion a taste of things to come.

Wrestle Kingdom 11 - Kazuchika Okada vs Kenny Omega for the IWGP Heavyweight Title.

Wrestling Dontaku 2017 - After defeating Fale , Okada challenges Kenny to a rematch at Dominion!

Dominion 2016 - Kazuchika Okada vs Kenny Omega 2 for the IWGP Heavyweight Title

G1 Climax 2017 Night 18 - Kazuchika Okada vs Kenny Omega(Winner advances to finals).

G1 Climax 27 Final - Tetsuya Naito vs ? (blank if you want to watch unspoiled)

Wrestle Kingdom 12 - Kenny Omega vs Chris Jericho + Kazuchika Okada vs Tetsuya Naito

Wrestling Dontaku 2018 - Okada and Omega agree to face off again at Dominion.

The big one: Kazuchika Okada vs Kenny Omega 4 - 2 out of 3 falls match for the IWGP Heavyweight Title.

Awesome!

What is the picture quality on NJPW World like? Just paying 9 euros to watch a bunch of stuff seems a lot easier than pecking and hunting through dodgy sites for low quality rips.

It's all HQ, but it can be a little finicky and sometimes hard to search.

It feels weird how little coverage Cyberfight Festival is getting in Western media, it's easily the largest show of the next few months and likely to be in the running for the biggest show of the year.

I've been liking what I've seen from Michiko Miyagi in the last few GLEAT shows, but her opponents are usually the exaggerated cartoonish joshi style that I'm not really into, while Miyagi seems a lot more tough and serious. Is her home promotion more like her style, or more like her opponents?

If you're referring to Sendai Girls, it's a mix of both (no Joshi promotion can survive on being fully tough and serious) but tends towards seriousness as far as I can remember. They often link up with Chigusa's Marvelous promotion which should be a indicator of where they lie on the post-Ice Ribbon scale.

DDT is filled with older guys and it manages to feel fresh and vibrant rather than stagnant like NOAH can get.
