^^It's hard to figure out what GM did to that engine for its power ratings tests, but it's probably in the neighbourhood of 200-250 hp SAE net. Also, don't forget that a big block engine like that produces an absolute fuckload of torque.Fucknag posted:A 455ci V8 delivering 320 HP. And this was before unleaded fuels and emissions equipment. What the hell? Back then, they'd run an engine in absolutely ideal conditions, with no accessories (not even water pumps) for their horsepower ratings, to say nothing of running a carefully built "ringer" engine, as opposed to a regular production engine, which at the time was likely to never make rated production power. Seat Safety Switch posted:Someone has been pulling out old footage of local amateur racing and shoving it up on YouTube. This just got posted. It's an old Audi Quattro coupe menacing some bystanders to shore up its Group B credentials before it continues its run. I can't believe how much of the local stuff he's got on there that I've seen firsthand. Regarding that Audi video, I was at the RMR special stage in Bearspaw that year! I remember my dad taking my younger brother and I to the rally in his old Porsche 911, and I also remember just how wet and rainy it was that morning; I was miserable, at least until the first cars came by. Watching rallies is so much better when you're not eight years old; you can drink until you just don't give a poo poo that it's raining and cold. Also, watching his hill climb video at COP makes me sad once again that they put speed bumps all up and down that road.

I watched a few of the related videos with footage of the ride, and it all looks pretty harmless - aside from the t-shirt-wearing squids, but there's not much you can do to avoid those. You're joking, right? Literally every one of those riders in that video could have been written up for some kind of moving violation; people riding on hard shoulders, cutting solid lines...the list goes on and on, and this is even before we get to fleeing a police roadblock. Also, unless you have made arrangements with the police for escort (which I'm probably safe to say, they didn't), a mass ride like that should stick to one or two lanes only, not blocking an entire highway. Christ, even when the Angels ride into town, they ride two-abreast in one lane only - if a quasi-legal motorcycle gang can do it, why can't these morons? I hope every one of those riders gets the book thrown at them.

Ruf is lucky enough to be in a country that very specifically defines what constitutes a production car and what it merely modified. They are quite a bit more involved than your average tuning company, though; they buy bodies-in-white from Porsche and install their own stuff in them, giving the cars a Ruf VIN in the process. So technically they are a manufacturer, but the line is awfully blurry in their case as well as Hennessey. This AMS company is not a manufacturer by any stretch; they just bolt on a bunch of go-fast parts and call it a day. If that constitutes a production car, we happen to have a spare Honeywell TFE-731 sitting in the hangar right now; perhaps I should bolt it up to my

This means pretty much everyone on the road is a relatively inexperienced driver. -Alcohol -Bad roads and poor driving conditions: Weather in Russia is bad; combine it with terribly built roads and idiotic markings (lanes ending suddenly and the like) and it makes for trouble. -Alcohol -Lack of law enforcement: Why pay attention to traffic rules when you know the cops don't give a poo poo, and if they do, it's because they're fishing for bribes. -Alcohol

CAT INTERCEPTOR posted:Huh. Clever. Oil. Sudo Echo posted:Yeah it''s perfectly reasonable up until he blows up the batteries with the welder. In all the time it took to get that fire going he could have just warmed and charged them but that wouldn't be as much fun, right? The problem is that at those extreme temperatures the oil is basically solid and essentially glues everything in place. Even with fresh, strong batteries there is basically no chance that they would have been able to start that motor. And again, since the oil is basically solid, there is no lubrication provided either once you do get it going. This sort of thing is something we covered in great detail in my training as a commercial pilot; how to get an old radial aircraft engine, cold-soaked overnight in the Arctic, to start and run. The first trick is to never let it get into that situation in the first place; what you do is right after you shut down for the day, you drain the engine oil out of the tanks while it's still hot, then keep it warm overnight on what amounts to an oversized camp stove. Second, you remove the battery and keep it warm as well. Finally, you blanket the engine and props to try and retain as much heat as possible, and to trap as much heat from the smudge pots that you (or more likely the mechanic riding along) are going to light and watch overnight. The next morning, you refill the oil tanks and put the battery back in the aircraft, then remove the blankets. In the cockpit, the aircrew will activate the oil dilution system, which essentially pumps raw gasoline into the oil tank, reducing its viscosity and (hopefully) preventing it from freezing on contact with the cold engine. The props will be turned a few times by hand as usual, then a start will be attempted...you'd better get it right, because if it's minus 30 or below, you might only get one or two tries before the engine is too cold. If that happens, then you're building a fire under the engine to try and warm the thing, which might not be easy in the Arctic. As for turbine engines in this environment, all you do is pop the battery out, keep it warm overnight, then start the airplane as you would anywhere else.
