Someone told me to try coming here to talk about Pump it Up! It's a very big passion of mine:

I do play at Arcades once a month to help me stay in shape. But I also play this game at home using the SteppXX modification. It works exactly the same. BGA and all.

Currently the best song I can perform is legally an S23. I have only beaten S25s on custom packs that are graded "Approperately'. Whatever that means.

Edit- :siren: You may want to turn down the volume near the end on some because I pop off a little.

I’ve been playing PIU a bit more lately because my local DDR cab is in dire condition and it’s actually extremely enjoyable once you use the full mode code (it’s a Fiesta 2 cab and the default list doesn’t have much going for it). It's a fun journey to go on and it will work you out. Let me know how you are doing.

But yeah I have been playing since 2004 and believe me I do feel like I am getting too old for this game. But at the same time I play super conservative and it does not really look good when performing in front of people. Some even call it cheating; I do like my lungs, and this game will beat you down if you let it. Just like DDR it's all about learning how to conserve energy and prepare for the moments where its needed in the higher levels of play.

Doubles is another story. I enjoy performing doubles when I go play near Atlanta. But that will beat you down as well.

Freestyling is great exersize AND it looks cool if you perform comfortably. H.O.T is a prime example. No pun intended.

Edit- Just also wanted to go a little further but starting out a lot of new players do not necessarily use the bar unless they feel uncomfortable with the layout. DDR is no exception, but it really depends on player preference and skill.

I have seen players perform very well without using the bar, but to me using it is more comfortable, and I have met others who like to laugh and taunt at people who use them. I do not really talk to those people and thankfully they are very few of them.

But as you climb into the much harder difficulties and when the game throws very rapid fire stairs and twists then its easy to get caught up and trip. That's why the bar is there as a safety precaution and to prevent players from falling and breaking their necks or hurting other players around them.

Were you supposed to use your hands, or kind of smash your feet down at a weird angle, or what?

The .ssc files used in the software I use is also connected with official user custom steps and the official stepcharts from the arcades.

You can legit make your own feet / hand pads at home which is also what I use.

As for your second question; those steps use heel to toe. One foot can hit two steps as long as the foot is pointing in the direction of the notation from the mindset of heel to toe.

Double postin' more Pump it Up stuff. This past weekend I finally got through my thick skull on managing certain step patterns that and also remembering to speed up past X4 on certain charts so I can manage to read closeup steps better in the future.

Everybody should know this song. But I was stuck on learning how to read this for weeks without going past X4 and once I did and learned the pattern it made life so much easier (And goofy because you have to do a lot of twists and heel stepping to get right)

Conga S21

This next song is more stamina and twist focused. And it does not give up. Given the name and how big of a reputation it has I am sure you can understand why:

Bee S22
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hf1fHJUJtQ

And finally, every cabnet version of Pump it Up has one song that is cruel and unusual. In the later stages on S26 watching it looks borderline impossible, and hell even Doubles very few people in the world can actually stage pass the song. But yesterday was a big milestone for me being able to finally read and beat a song (Granted at S23 but still)

I agree with everyone what is said so far. I have not played DDR in years but I do remember the arrows are colored different if the steps represent a sharper step. Like 1/4 step colors look different than 1/16 step colors. Is this still a hint with DDR nowadays?

What is Ghost stepping?

PIU does not have luxury but it does forgive you with mechanics that I do not know officially. I call it "Galloping" to hit steps at the same time but delaying slightly on arrows that follow quickly after like comparing 1/16th steps. But this follows through with anticipating certain steps.

One thing I will admit that I do and I am sure a lot of others do as well. Is that for songs you are not sure of don't be ashamed to look up and anticipate the steps ahead of time. The music should be a que as to when certain harder steps are coming up based on studying the steps themselves.

Reading is one thing but its difficult for someone uninitiated for first difficult song attempts to throw you off.

When I play PIU yeah sure I can read the steps. But getting older I learned the true meaning of the spirit being strong but the flesh is weak. All you can do from that point is practice, adjust the speed of the arrows / notes to better suit your playstyle, and learn how to anticipate steps as the song progresses.

A perfect example of this is Csikos Post on S21. The beginning, and certain areas of the songs; not only do the note speed increases dramatically but there is a certain pattern even I can't quite adjust to yet for accuracy. But I still do my best to anticipate and it's gotten better the more times I perform this song. Here is my latest attempt:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stqR3gza-wk

Again I know it's pump but the same method has to be applied to DDR and other rhythm step based games. At least from my experience.

Which is understandable according to the management there; because children are present a lot of parents and other parties are not very fond of being recorded for privacy reasons. If you do have a camera it has to be directly facing you and the game and nowhere else.

Capture Cards you will have to know the owner. But the ones I talked to just flat out do not like it. Its simple to do and does not require much on Pump and DDR. I do not have any videos on my channel that shows how they do it. But I did let someone borrow my HD60+ and had the software on a laptop nearby that recorded arcade gameplay. So instead of the PC directly connected to the monitor. It connected to the hardware that splits one way into the monitor and another into the laptop so you can record and stream gameplay. The only issue is that you may also need HDMI To 'X' converter where X equals whatever connection is used already connected to the monitor in the game.

There are other ways of doing it but I am not sure how it works for beatmania. You could ask a tech person who works there (Not sure if R1 has regular tech people there) if you can see.

So now officially I am on the leaderboards. Though I won't be able to go back to a live machine until a few weeks. When I go I will post some results.

Yeah I am very happy I got that. I knew that the AM.Pass was a thing but it's not really something you would want to get unless you are hardcore into Pump it Up and other Andimiro games. In South Korea it's a big thing but in the states I have only met one person who uses one and it's a neat little thing to have if you care about tracking your progression and whatnot.

I used to be very into Pump it Up a lot during 2005-2012. I have a funny story that goes along with it. So if you like funny stories then buckle up.

I used to work for Disney during 2006-2010 and on my free time they had this place in Pleasure Island called Disney Quest that was a 5 story arcade where you paid an admission fee and all of the arcades were free to play. One day during a day off my friends and I went to it and when I saw they had Pump it Up (Prime) it was amazing to see as it was in the middle of everything. All floors could watch you dance and they had other rythm games like DDR and Beatmania. But one day I jumped on and was able to have fun. During this time I was around skill wise Single 21-Double 21. Which at the time itself was where the bar was highest. (Nowadays it's S26 singles and D28 Doubles)

After a few months of being there one of the coordinators told me about a contest Andimiro was holding and that I should definitely sign up. The person at the time did not know I was a cast member and I never said anything about it. So I did. There were teams showing up to freestyle to step to stamina. I just showed up to perform the best I could do at the time.

When near the Tournament's end my name was called and another guy from Cuba who traveled from there to compete. The prize was $2500 and all sorts of assortment of prizes that I can not remember what it was for the life of me. Things like Swag, merch, etc.

I won that Tournament fair and square and it was one of the most exciting times of my life. A few days later my boss at the time called me into his office and had to break the news to me that I had to forfeit the prize because I was technically "An Exhibition by Disney". And as signed in the contact at the time; I was forced to give up the prize to the guy from Cuba as well as being bound to not perform competitions in the future so long as I worked for the company.

This lead me into taking several years away from Pump it Up. And two years before the Pandemic I was able to get back into the game as well as perform at home. But believe me that day when I quit playing I had a good reason. Haha.

But going back into Pump. I was able to get my first S in S21:

This song is a CLASSIC. Love this.

I also got a friend of mine into playing at home and she was laughing at some of the things I have learned through the years. Like Vanishing steps. And asked me to try to perform that on harder steps. So Ill share with you goons on the easiest to what I can currently do in one play session.

How it started:

I was absolutely not ready for the rapid fire steps on my first playthrough. A good example of heel to toe hitting the same steps hits hard with this song.

I performed this song because a friend of mine was doing the same song on Beat Saber and was surprised the credit went to BanYa. This next performance is a full song version of the PIU Classic but made as a User Custom Step. I think it's very fun for the level and im happy to share my attempt at it.
