So I left the US several months ago and had to leave my bunnies. A dear friend took them in, and since she had a bunny already (and LOVES animals), I knew they'd be in great hands.

Frith died a week after I left. I think he was just too fragile for that kind of traumatic change. I cried for days.

I just found out Zen died today. This time I'm just shellshocked.

I'm 100% positive my friend didn't do anything wrong. The bunnies were middle aged (about 6 or 7) and sometimes terrible things happen. I haven't even had them with me for now 8 months, but I did have them for over 5 years and this is the moment when I feel like I truly don't have pets anymore.

Sorry to be such a downer. Post more pictures of your babies, please, so I can adore them from afar. I don't think I'm ready to get pets again for a while.

Bitsy and Paterson died within a short period of time. Paterson died first and then Bitsy a few months later. I think that when they have been together for so long it just happens :(

I'm so sorry for your loss but know that you were a great owner and that they were well taken care of!

edit: Normally other bunny themed forums and websites are pretty sickeningly cutesy, writing in first person as if they're a bunny or other such things but this site seems to have the right tone for rabbits http://bunniez.hubpages.com/hub/When-Bunnies-Attack-What-To-Do-When-Your-Rabbit-Bites

I'm so, so sorry that you lost Thumper.

I want you to know that after Paterson died it took a few days but Bitsy adjusted. I gave her some extra attention for the first few days and then she started coming to me more and I backed off a bit and let her do her thing. I think that I projected my feelings of loss onto her which made me sadder.

Well, it turns out there was cause for concern. When I had gotten home from work yesterday, there was still all of the food that I had left her for breakfast in her bowl, and she was just laying in her cage. She wouldn't eat any craisins (her favorite snack), and she wouldn't really move at all. She also wasn't drinking any water, and she hadn't pooped at all from what I could see. She would eventually leave her cage, but she would just go to one of her favorite spots in the apartment, and end up laying there. Every once in a while, she would stretch for a little bit, but then continue to just lay there.

I ended up taking her to a vet this morning. The vet said she was unable to feel anything strange going on when she palpated her. Her temperature was normal. She did seem aware and alert, she kept trying to kick and everything when she was being held by the vet and vet tech. They decided they were going to treat it as GI stasis because they were unable to find anything that would pinpoint exactly what the issue was. They gave me some Cisapride and Metacam to give to her, and also some Oxbow Critical Care. She must have loved the taste of the Cisapride and Metacam, because although it was pretty obvious she did not enjoy being fed with a syringe, she gobbled it up pretty readily. When it came time for the Critical Care, though, she didn't seem to be as big of a fan. She ate probably the majority of it, but she also spit a lot of it out, and resisted me putting the syringe into her mouth.

I'll be giving her her second dose of the Cisapride and Metacam in a few hours. I just got done giving her the Critical Care for the second time about 15 minutes ago. She seems more alert and awake than she did this morning. This morning she kept laying down, occasionally getting up to just lay down again in a different position. Now she's sitting up, but she's staying in her litter box and mostly staring straight ahead. It also looks like she drank some water since this morning, but I haven't seen her drink any since I got home from work, and she still won't eat any food, or even her favorite treats.

:ohdear:

Can you try to give her some warm water in a syringe as well? The order that I would do it is medicine, warm water, CC. If bunny wasn't into the CC I would add something to it... maybe some fresh pineapple juice or some squash babyfood.... something sweet that would encourage eating it.

I wish you luck.

I'm glad that Bob found a home! You guys did really well by finding him. It's sad that someone would ditch him and sad (though amazingly good at the same time) that random strangers would treat him better than those who got him as a pet in the first place.

monsieur fatso posted:

I've never posted a picture of her in this thread, so here's her introduction.

I'm SO glad that she's doing better! Also that's kinda how I pictured her :3:

I got my dog guys and it's really funny and kinda weird because he exhibits behaviours that I saw in Bitsy (need for escape and being naughty) and Paterson (goofy and silly) and it's pretty great. Though it has made me kinda sad a few times because when I was eating my apple he I realised that he probably didn't want any and that's a thing that I used to share with my babies. He does like the same toys though. And cardboard boxes. So it's not ALL different.

I'm glad that I don't have to worry about GI Stasis every again. But those of you who have rabbits: consider yourselves spoiled by their lack of RANK TOOTS.

That was the week that he ate carpet and went into stasis and my mom took him to the vet and said "do everything on this list including x-rays and possibly a sonogram.

It happened to Paterson sometimes. I gave him a butt bath and cut back on his herbs and it was okay... it was mostly things being too watery and making his dookies watery as opposed to coming out harder.

I can grab some pretty premium hay from the barn I am working at. I'm reading up on veggies now - sounds like carrots are a sometimes-once-in-awhile thing and spinach/kale should be limited. I don't know if the rabbit was on pellets previously, so I guess we'll see what kind of a mess comes out of the back of him with this new diet.

I could never figure that out even when my vet showed me. When I tried it he'd just flip his poo poo. I just couldn't ever trim my last rabbit's nails. Fortunately they never caused him any problems.

When I was at the vet I said "can you file his nails too?" Thinking that well you cut them why not just bevel them a bit right? And the woman looked at me, rolled her eyes, and said "that's what concrete is for". Bitch he's wearing booties. Do you think that my apartment has concrete floors??

I guess the main difference between bunny claws and dog claws is that my rabbits were never like "oh my play style is to scratch you and every dog I meet bc that makes sense".

NIC cages are on sale on Amazon (at least they were yesterday) so I ordered a couple to finally give my bun a real home. What do those of you who use them use for the bottom of your cages? Like the flooring?

I hadn't really planned this out, but the price was the lowest I had seen, so I wanted to snag a few while I could afford them.

I would try to have carpet or blankets in there but never bothered with any kind of actual flooring - especially if your bunny uses the litter box somewhat regularly.

I think if you have two young cats you should focus on them more than getting ANOTHER pet - especially one that is high maintenance. You are definitely making the right decision. Two young cats should be enough to really keep you busy - adding a bunny to that seems like a bit much.

I'm so sorry for you loss, especially at this time. You did right by her and all your buns even if it doesn't seem like it right now. Head tilt is nasty and neither of mine made a fully recovery. The level of care she would have needed while you were gone would have been too high for anyone who isn't a bunny master, and her passing peacefully in your arms was the last kindness you could do for her.

I hope that you are able to enjoy your wedding with your evil darlings all looking down on you. Message me if you need any support, I would be glad to listen even if it's just a message to get things off your chest.

Muahahaha I'm so glad I don't have to deal with that hay, anticipating illness, treating illness, and EVIL EVIL devil child stuffs anymore. Earlier today I told my friend that something was in "the bunny room" even though there has never been a rabbit in this apartment, let alone that room, and I haven't owned one for a year. Makes me kinda sad, but also somewhat relieved.

Here's a dog. He eats whatever, and can throw up (he even eats that!), and I don't feel under constant threat of my evil creature dying.

Also he cuddles and kisses me and is pretty much indestructible.
