LONG POST AHEAD:

Ok, after talking about getting a dog for a long while, my wife and I decided to start looking for one and we quickly found some breeders on some dog sites. I had done some research online and used the knowledge of previous pet ownership with my family but wish I had remembered that SA has a pet forum.

We got close to buying a pembroke from a breeder but once I found out that the breeder "just hadn't gotten around to registering the parents, but I ASSURE YOU THEY ARE 100% CORGI" we decided to look elsewhere. I don't mind dogs that aren't AKC registered but I'm not buying one from a "breeder". Also, the breeder said the dog had it's puppy shots that she bought from tractor supply and gave herself as well as suggesting we meet in a parking lot. That was the 2nd red flag that made us back out.

We found another breeder closer to home that had shot records and papers and seemed less dodgy. We went to the breeder's house and saw the parents in the backyard. This may have been a backyard breeder but from pictures and videos sent to us from the breeder, the pups all grew up in the house together and their house was on a lot of land. This seemed fine by me because almost every dog my family bought growing up were bought from breeders in a similar situation. All of those Golden Retrievers turned out great, sadly they are no longer with us (one due to a truck hitting her and the other two from old age. They lived to be 14 yrs old). So, now that I've read this thread and the puppy thread, I've realized that our new addition has come into our home a couple of weeks early, 6 weeks old to be exact. Every puppy my family has bought came home at 6 weeks so I thought nothing of this.

SO, the big issue isn't what we did wrong or how to do it better next time but how to do the best we can now for our new little puppy.

A little about Panda. She's almost 7 weeks. Very chill Pembroke and adjusting well to her new home. Very good about not barking too much. In fact, she doesn't make a peep all night which we were very surprised by. She only barked/whined the first 2 mornings and hasn't since. Since she's so young and wasn't keen on the crate, we decided to gate her in our kitchen/dining room and put her crate in the same area with the door open. She is now keen on sleeping in the crate with the door open and willingly goes inside.

The Concerns: Since we do live in an apartment (a spacious 2 bedroom) we are worried about taking her outside before she gets old enough and is properly protected against parvo. Due to this concern, we are focusing on paper training her. Once we get the OK from the Vet to let her outside into public spaces (we don't have a private yard), it's time to focus on housebreaking her. I know puppies sleep a lot but is it normal for Corgi's to have that "sad" look on their face all the time when they are resting? I just want to make sure she's not depressed or something. My wife comes home for lunch and plays with her and then is back again in 3 hours. The longest she's left alone is about 3-4 hours at a time.

The Problems: She's very good most of the time but I get up with her in the morning while the wife gets ready for work. During this time, she is very rambunctious like a puppy should be but I'm trying to break her from biting ankles and locking onto my slippers. I've tried to get her focused on toys instead but that only works for a minute or so. This morning, I decided to place her in a half-bathroom for 1-2mins and she seemed to be a lot calmer when she came out but 5 mins later, she was at it again. Of course, she's a puppy and I'm not expecting it to work right away but are these signs of improvement?

She also desperately wants to play with our cat Geoffrey. He's interested in her and wants to be near her but isn't sure about what to do when she bounds towards him with her little jaws open. I'm not at all worried about the cat getting violent or defensive, he just runs off and gets in a chair. I am worried that I'm encouraging the dog to herd the cat. Any experience with this?

Again, sorry for the long post. I don't pretend to know everything about proper dog purchasing but went with my experience. In hindsight, I wish I had asked the breeder more questions. Also, apologies if any of these questions have been answered throughout the thread. I did read the new puppy thread OP and got some great advice.

Here's a pic of Panda.

Are corgis generally very talkative? I visited my boyfriend's family and they have two, one of whom is all about growling and grumbling and "talking".

Panda is only 4 months old but she's at the 'barking' stage, especially in the morning when we're trying to get stuff together and get out of the house. She'll also grumble/bark when she's bored because she wants us to chase her. Poor thing, she's cooped up all week and only gets extended outdoor time on the weekends but thankfully after this Monday, she'll be all clear on her Parvo shots so we can start taking her for walks every day.

We're trying to ignore her when she barks so she doesn't think that's how she gets what she wants but my god, that high pitch bark can get to you.

After a long day at my folks' house digging, getting covered in mud, playing with their golden retriever Daisy, etc. I had to give Panda a bath for her vet appointment today. I don't know if it's the perspective of the camera but I'm so happy her ears are so massive. She looks like she's about to just fly away.

Now that Panda is fully vaccinated, she got to go to a dog park that is about 3-4 blocks from our place. She was super scared as we got closer so we hung out in front of the gate for a bit but as soon as she started smelling the other dogs coming in and out, she got comfortable enough to go in. She had a blast and got absolutely filthy.

After a few mins of her running around and playing with the other dogs, an older guy showed up with a Cardigan named Stan. He had a tail and all he cared about was chasing a tennis ball. I talked to the guy for awhile and we bullshitted about Corgis. It was a great couple of hours after work and she's been zonked out for the most part all evening. Now I know where to take her when she's bouncing off the walls.

We're so excited about something Panda just did. After a rough first week of house breaking back in November, she has made a lot of progress but we were still occasionally catching her eliminating in the house. On Saturday, I hung a thread of bells that my wife put together next to the front door and we've been ringing them every time we let her out. So after work, we're talking on the couch and hear the bells ring and see her waiting patiently at the door. We're stupidly excited that our dog is learning.

Bonus pic of her digging a hole with my nieces.

Panda has just hit the 6 month mark and now she's battling with some kind of allergy or immune deficiency that's causing a skin condition on her head, ears and face. The good thing is that she's not showing scabbing anymore but her little bald spots just don't look healthy. The Vet says that her skin is reacting to two kinds of bacteria that's everywhere but most dogs aren't affected by it.

Her behavior hasn't changed and she doesn't seem bothered by it but she doesn't like us to touch the bald spots and the Vet has instructed us not to take her to the dog park for awhile. We're not sure if her hair will grow back either. :smith: But, she's still adorable and is in good spirits. Hopefully we can overcome this thing. We're really worried that it could be Dermatomyositis.

We took Panda to a dermatologist and they confirmed our suspicions that it is in fact Dermatomyositis. We had a biopsy done and it was sent off to the lab to confirm it but the doctor is pretty confident thats what we're dealing with so now she's on medication. Dermatomyositis is a genetic defect that causes a lack of blood flow to the extremities which causes lesions and scabbing. Panda's head and back legs have taken the most damage. Some of the spots won't recover but we're confident that it won't be a quality of life threatening issue like it can be with some breeds. She'll just look like she gets into a lot of bar fights.

She's doing great. After wearing the cone of shame for 2 days, we trust her not to scratch her stitches so she's back to her old self.

We think she may have stepped on something or stepped wrong recently and that is causing her to favor her right front leg and that's caused us to be paranoid but we noticed it a couple days ago and she doesn't always do it. Going to ask the specialist about that next time we talk. The specialist did say that in severe cases, it can affect the throat muscles making it difficult to swallow food/drink and that would be a quality of life change that we wouldn't want to see. We really hope that the cosmetic effects are as bad as it gets. I really don't want her to deal with muscle atrophy.

What is the best way to teach a corgi the "bring it back" half of the game?

Mine is super into chasing anything I throw and I feel like if he would figure out to bring it back then he would be into it. I can almost never get him to do it to even reward it when he does. He just blitzes toward whatever I throw, tags it with his nose, looks back at me like "Yeah, I did it," and then wanders off and does something else.

Panda loves to chase after the ball/stick/whatever but she only brings it halfway back. :psyduck: She totally grasps the idea of fetch but expects me to meet her halfway when returning.

Still not sure about swimming just yet. She likes the water but I don't think she want's to be submerged. I'm trying to go slowly as to not freak her out and traumatize her. My brother's golden retriever will only get her feet wet and is terrified of being in the water.

In other news, during the whole dermatomyositis situation, we put off getting her spayed under the vet's suggestion. She later gave the go ahead after her last check up but we put it off too long. Panda became a woman, many times in small spots on our floors. Luckily not on carpet but we've waited a little over 3 weeks and will make the appointment soon now that she's stopped spotting. I'm concerned about when to get her spayed. My regular vet (not her specialist) said that after she stops bleeding to just go ahead and bring her in while I've read info that says to wait 6 weeks. We feel dumb for waiting too long but now just want to make sure we don't jump the gun.

We paid $650 outside of Houston for Panda and she ended up with Dermatomyositis. I didn't really understand the hatred towards "back yard breeders" because any dog that we paid for when I was growing up came from families that just happened to breed their dogs and we never had an issue with them. Panda came from a family with a lot of land and it looked like they took good care of their dogs so nothing came off as inhumane or wrong when we bought her. In the end, we could have asked more questions or been more informed before making the purchase and they could have taken more pride in their sir and dame as far as medical history and health screening. Panda is doing great and she's happy, so we're happy.

Some of those cardi and pem mixes look really interesting while some of them look a little weird.

My actual and genuine hatred comes from a very emotional place. If a breeder is not actively trying to make the breed better, stronger, and healthier, they have no right asking anyone to pay money for the heartbreak to come.

I totally agree with you. I had never experienced the bad side of it so I didn't even realize it was a serious concern. I figured all of those fancy breeders were just for people looking to buy a show quality dog for their own breeding or competition purposes.

I did speak with a woman who ASSURED me that her puppies were 100% Corgi, just never had the paperwork done nor had any medical records for the parents or had shot records for the pups and wanted to charge $400.

How do I get my corgi to quit her job as the household cat alert dog? She is absolutely obsessed with our two cats and whining/being annoying when they are around.

Our apartment is split in two levels with the living room/kitchen down and two beds up. Unfortunately, that cats' food is on the stair landing and their box is under the stairs. Panda is not allowed upstairs so she flips out often when the cats come down. It's like she's never seen them before. So if she catches them downstairs, she chases them back up while growling. I know she just wants to play but I think that ship has sailed for the cats.
