Bumping because the 1077 raws are out.

http://raw.senmanga.com/Hajime_No_Ippo/1077/1

Ippo has recovered somewhat from the knock-out and his brain is OK, but the potential damage is something at the back of everyone's minds. Ippo will also basically be starting over from scratch (presumably working of his defence, which he admitted was rubbish in one of the previous chapters) once he is sufficiently recovered. Meanwhile, he will be assisting Takamura, who will be uniting two of the Middleweight world titles in his upcoming bout.

This is actually addressed in the latest raws. Kamogawa has told Takamura to unify each weight class he's in before moving up.

Takamura's thought process is a nice contrast to Ippo's though - "Holy poo poo, these punches loving hurt! What can I do to avoid being hit by them and/or put this guy on the defensive so he can't throw as many?"

Is there actual word the series is ending or is everyone just jumping to that conclusion because Ippo lost?

I ask because it certainly doesn't seem like the kinda thing this author would do unless there was some outside prompting like health, falling numbers, a traumatic life event, etc.

It would be kinda cool if the weekly format was just too much at this point and it shifted to a monthly more serious end game focused story with this as the pivot point, but I'm sure that kind of format change would have been announced.

Official word is that it will be continuing on, but there's no telling what direction it'll go in. At least, that's what the twitter account for the editor assigned to HnI has stated.

Keep in mind that even at the height of its popularity, Toriyama's editor Kazuhiko Torishima still had a fair bit of say over Dragon Ball (the Android saga is an example of this, where he balked at No. 19 and No. 20 being the big bads - "A fatass and an old man? gently caress off" - before further balking at No. 17 and No. 18 being the replacement big villains - "They're just a couple of punk kids! gently caress off" - resulting in Cell being introduced and then refined into Perfect Cell), so who knows.

I would imagine he'd still have considerable clout, largely due to longevity, but I suspect his editor would probably occasionally have some words with him over the direction of the series every so often.

Not yet. And considering how long this series has gone on for, when it does end, it'll probably be a bigger deal. The person who did this translation, for whatever reason, obscured the text that the publisher adds, all of which indicates that it's got a bit more to go before it finishes.

The 1208 raws are available.

Kumi arranges a referral for Ippo to go see a brain specialist, after a discussion about CTE with him. Ippo does a full round of scans and finds that while he's showing some symptoms, he isn't fully punch drunk, but he's at a high risk if he chooses to continue boxing the way he does. Ippo then visits the gym, and has a meeting with Kamogawa, where he declares that he's retiring while he's still relatively healthy, and after a farewell from Takamura, he does the leaf-catching exercise from the start of the series.

1208 ends with a statement saying that it will continue on to the next issue - ergo, not done yet.

I forgot to mention that there was a huge step forward in Ippo's relationship with Kumi: he touched her boobies.

Ippo's mum makes him walk her home after he comes home from a day of work on the fishing boats. As they're walking and discussing CTE, she strongly implies she wants to be with Ippo, and then she trips over a rock. Ippo quickly catches her as she falls, and inadvertently places his hand on her boob. He then quickly moves his hand to her shoulder because he senses Mashiba glaring at him. Ippo's talk with Takamura is around "going on an adventure and finding a treasure," implying that Ippo is finally ready to settle down with Kumi.

Kamogawa and Yagi have a quick discussion about Ippo. Yagi appreciates that Ippo was the one that declared he was retiring, rather than making Kamogawa make him quit. They acknowledge that while Ippo wasn't punch drunk, he was dangerously on the verge, and that his decision to retire couldn't have been timed better. Kamogawa reflects on how Ippo helped him have a "good dream," and that he'll be the last boxer he'll produce.

Up on the roof, Aoki, Itagaki and Kimura have a conversation about Ippo. Itagaki is clearly upset by what's happened, and Kimura talks about how he once made the decision to make sure that when he's done boxing, that he doesn't leave with any regrets. Itagaki ponders if Ippo left with any regrets, but Kimura points out that only Ippo would know, and he sure looked happy as he waved goodbye. Aoki says he wishes he could've had one more spar with Ippo, at which point Takamura walks in, telling him that you can't go around hitting a punchdrunk broken man.

Itagaki asks him what he said to Ippo, and Takamura feigns ignorance. Kimura and Aoki agree that it would've been something designed to kick him when he's down, while pouring salt into his wounds. Takamura does not appreciate this. He then tells Itagaki that he asked Ippo if he found the treasure he was looking for when he embarked on his boxing adventure.

This cuts to Ippo looking at the falling leaves from last issue, and Ippo thinking about said "treasure," - his time spent boxing, with the highs and lows of his career superimposed over the leaves. We then get the official match record for his last match - 4th round, 2mins 45 seconds, 26 wins, 23 by knock-out, and 3 losses. Ippo Makunouchi - retired."

While this would be a fine point to finish, the text in the lower right states: "to be continued next issue."

1213 raws are out.

Ippo, his mum, Kumi and Itagaki's sister Nanako are having dinner, and Nanako mentions how she wishes she could've seen Ippo with a world title.

Kumi wants to change the subject, while Nanako claims that Ippo probably could've done it. Ippo's mum is astonished to hear this. It turns out she never watched or followed Ippo's career, because she didn't like the idea of her son getting punched around. Kumi doesn't like the discussion because she doesn't want any regrets that Ippo has to be dredged up.

Ippo says that he doesn't have any nostalgia for the ring, and has no reason to go back to boxing, but because it was such a huge part of his life, he'll never be able to forget his time as a professional athlete. He admits he has some regrets and things he wishes he could've done, and how he made some promises he was never able to keep - specifically his promise to Kamogawa to show the completed new Dempsey roll - but he did the best he could, so he feels he can hold his head up high and apologise for his failures and thank everyone for his experiences.

Ippo says that before he boxed, he had nothing he could be proud of, and he's satisfied with how he's been able to change and grow.

Ippo's mum just expresses relief that he's finally retired, notes that he's not depressed about quitting, and as long as she can live without worrying about the well-being of her son, she's satisfied.

Kumi's happy with this turn of events, and we learn that it's part of her deranged grand plan to delete all traces of boxing from Ippo's life, from Ippo's habit of shadow boxing or any individuals that bring up the sport.

Shinoda from the gym then turns up, begging Ippo to return to the ring, much to the dismay and fury of Kumi. Shinoda apologises for interrupting their dinner, and once again begs Ippo to come back. Kumi yells at him, and accuses him of lacking compassion, and how she can not, in good conscience agree to such a thing in her position as a nurse. Ippo and Kumi try to explain that he can't return to the ring, when it turns out Shinoda needs Ippo to act as a cornerman for a fighter at the gym.

It's a cold open to Ippo lying on a hospital bed. His eyes are closed, like he's sleeping, but there are all sorts of tubes connecting him to all sorts of monitors and an IV stand. He's surrounded by his friends and family. Kumi and Ippo's mum are openly crying. Takamura and Mashiba are standing behind everyone. Aoki, Kimura, Itagaki, Kamogawa, Yagi and Shinoda, as well as Ippo's two disciples are all trying, and some are failing, to hold back their tears.

Miyata walks in, and Takamura and Mashiba immediately stare daggers at him. Takamura, unlike his usual bombastic self is almost reserved, as he quietly tells Miyata he has a lot of nerve showing his face. Mashiba is far more blunt, and simply tells him to "gently caress off."

Miyata doesn't protest and simply walks out of the room, and sits down on a padded bench in the hallway. Also sitting on the bench and openly weeping is the last person Ippo had fought. He tells Miyata that he's hanging up his gloves and he admits that he still doesn't know how to live with himself after what has happened.

Mashiba shows tenderness towards Kumi for the first time, as he places his hand on her shoulder, as if to let her know that he's there for her. Ippo's mum turns to the doctor, who'd been there the entire time and quietly asks him to switch off the machines. The devices that had kept Ippo breathing stop and we see his heart rate monitor flatline.

The final panel is of Wanpo sitting at the entrance of Ippo's house, eagerly waiting for his best friend to come home.
