I assisted the university photog today doing headshots of the football team (just basic stuff, setting up/breaking down, getting the names/order of everyone). As an unexpected bonus, the athletic department shoehorned the women's volleyball team in ahead of them. With the volleyball team he had a few of them in the room at a time, which made it go faster (they all saw the poses he wanted ahead of time) and put them more at ease. The football team was like herding cats, they dicked around, distracted each other, etc. So I'd say what I got out of it was "for single headshots of groups of people, shoot women with other women in the room, and probably do the guys one at a time".

I'd really hope so. For the sake of humanity that they don't actually bread. Used to be friends of mine; back when I would have and did shoot an engagement for free.

It was a disaster in the end.

I got very few decent shots (most looked like they were trying way too hard to act loving instead of actually being in that state). They were very rude (Hi! Free Photographer who is your friend) and in the end the Fiance who is a bitch (okay they weren't both my friends) accused me of making her "fatter" in photoshop after seeing a few samples (Why would a photographer do this?). They started "demanding" to send them all the raw files... At which point I deleted all the photos and told them good luck and go gently caress yourself.

Cheap son of bitches are married now; they never did have another engagement shoot. or perhaps they did and those were also so ugly it was impossible to show. Their wedding shots consist of some jackass using a Canon Digital Elph with the flash going off in every shot regardless of need. It's something special... memories to cherish forever.

This is all pretty funny, and a good lesson to for the rest of us.

I'm not sure about the flare/lack of contrast on the subject in the first and last ones. It looks like you shot mostly in harsh, direct sunlight?

It's not bad, but I'm not sure the "looking down at" perspective suits an author photo that well. They're all pretty tight shots, if you get a chance to shoot again you may want to try getting some wider ones, maybe a few environmentals and see if anything jumps out at you.

If it's any consolation, I picked ten books off my shelf at random and only 1-2 of them were any better than a snapshot that the authors friend/wife/husband took.

Bingo. You were not initially hired as a "Photographer." But, if you are not specific about this they will do their best (in my experience) to claim it was part of expanded and willful job duties.

Yeah, that is how mine has worked. I never bothered trying to get the copyright as all the stuff I'm shooting is going online for free educational use anyways, which is a dealbreaker for stock agencies AFAIK. Nice for fleshing out my portfolio and getting away from a computer screen (plus paid travel), and I bring my rangefinder along to shoot pictures for myself nowadays.

I don't know that this is really the right thread for this, but I need to vent somewhere. Huge group photos are a huge pain in the rear end. When that huge group is every sorority on campus, ten times so. Ugh.

All I can think of is getting up on a really high ladder and using a T/S lens (or large format camera with movements) to move the focal plane to cover the sweep of the heads.

There was a woman with me who was basically a handler, her sole job was to arrange them and get them all to shut the gently caress up for two seconds to let me take a photograph. That's still the best shot of like ten. Ugh.

Another day, another instant print. I am loving this stuff, however, I have run into a problem. I have no way to store them when 'in the field.' The print is particularly vulnerable to dust and smudging when it's freshly peeled, and I don't have anywhere to put it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was tossing them into the empty space in my bag where the camera went (so they weren't getting crushed or anything), but it's still less than ideal. My idea is to take a tupperware or some other kind of plastic box and try to find a way to stick some septums in it, so I have slots to drop the individual prints/negs in (might cannibalize some of the busted wooden film holders I have laying around for the dividers). I think individual storage is best, because they're still a little wet/gooey from the developing and I don't like how stuff sticks together if left to its own devices. I guess Ziploc bags in a tupperware would work, but it seems kind of inelegant.

The holder (either a Fuji PA-45, or a Polaroid 550) is way overpriced at $125-175, but I eventually broke down and bought one.

On an unrelated note, What kind of poses give people the slimiest look? I tried putting them side-ways but it came out weird. I also feel weird yelling "Suck in your gut fatty!". Any tips for that? I've learned that I need to go over basics of posing with people, especially musicians who aren't going to have any knowledge of how to look best for the camera, though truth be told I only know a few tips to pass along.

A cheap suit and a fake smile go a long way. If it's a guy, maybe a pedo-stache.

Haha yea. I like the shallow dof it creates (0 aperture after all) as well as the fact that you can make pseudo tilt shift effects too.

That's just what your camera is reporting because it can't talk with the lens, the aperture is still the same. The apparently shallow DoF is from shifting the focal plane (pseudo tilt shift effect) you mention. That's real tilt/shift btw, you just aren't doing it systematically like you would with a dedicated T/S lens or a view camera.

Nice portrait by the way!

Not to dog you on the backgrounds again, but the conclusion I draw from these photos is that she's the announcer for a shipyard. #2 and #3 also have hella reflections going on. Did a paid headshot for a friend of a friend yesterday who is an engineer/travel writer, we were both happy with how it turned out (although I quietly sperged out about the subtle reflection in the right lens of his glasses when I got home). He originally wanted a B&W shot, but I included the color and low-saturation ones with it and he liked those better. I'm definitely going to pick up a copy of Silver Efex Pro before I leave my university later in the summer though. I'm pretty much a babby at off-camera lighting and posed portrait shooting, how do you guys feel about it? I'm leaning towards competent but nothing special. I definitely want to get some more experience with this before I move, even if it's just shits and giggles stuff for friends.

I switched bags for my lighting equipment and left the head for my umbrella stand at home, but was able to improvise on-site with a briefcase on a shelf weighing down the umbrella :v:

Did a photo shoot for a friend of mine who plays the harp. This was my first portrait session, and it was also complicated because we were in her small studio apartment, which was kind of cluttered and messy. I tried to use off-camera flash to darken the apartment to hide that. I think it came out pretty well. Suggestions / comments?

Edit: The setup I was working with...

The shadow created by her head is way too hard.
