Seconded. CrossCode is a very good game and it does draw some inspiration from classic Zelda, but if you go in expecting a Zelda-like you run a high risk of being disappointed.

- i have also tried several metroids and none of them felt good. something about the basic movement just always feels really floaty and unpleasant to me and i can't get into them, i wish i could.
- yes i've played hollow knight. it was fine but had a lot of backtracking.

what else should i try?

Kind of a weird request, but does anyone have any games that are good to play for literally 3-5 minutes at a time, put down for 10 minutes, and pick back up again? Preferably something where I don't even have to pause, I can just turn away from it. Genre doesn't matter too much.

Any suggestions for JRPGs on Steam that have interesting settings? I started playing Trails after tons of people saying it's great and while the game itself is pretty okay so far the story and setting and characters are so generic and bland. I also tried one of the highly acclaimed Tales Of games a while ago and bouncing hard off of that as well, anything with knights and castles makes my eyes glaze over (except DQ for some reason).

Ara Fell. It's elves vs. vampires on a floating island in the sky with very good writing.

Kind of a general game question, but what is the best way to keep up with rising small independent games?

Like I'll hear about a cool game that some guy or small team is developing and wow you can download the current alpha but it turns out the game has been around for years and already has a community behind it. I would like to be more informed of situations like this earlier.

Examples would be Dwarf Fortress back before z-levels, Minecraft when it had limited map size, and Cataclysm before it was even Dark Days Ahead.

That might actually make a good thread. We have the fresh releases thread for things that have just come out, but nothing for anything earlier than that.

e: In a thread like that, it'd be very natural to link to ongoing kickstarter campaigns, but that could potentially run up against existing anti-spam rules. Best to clear it with the mods first.

I reinstall Mark of the Ninja every year or so. It's a wonderfully designed stealth platformer that adds replayability through the various costumes you can unlock, which give you bonuses tailored to various playstyles. My favorite is the one that makes guards panic if they see a dead body, which lets you do some brutal poo poo :allears:. It doesn't force you into constant combat like Arkham does; if you'd rather do full stealth and sneak by without a trace, then you may do so. Or murder everybody. Do whatever.

This is a very good game and should be better known.

FFII this was pretty boring, it felt like there wasn't much in the way of game mechanics

I'm guessing that you played the game that was released in the US as FF2. The actual FFII was a Japan-only release until sometime this century and it's not something anyone would ever describe as "[not] much in the way of game mechanics". If you want something pretty obtuse that is definitely worth checking out.

FFIV is a little dull now, but it was revolutionary at the time. The other SNES-era games, FFV and FFVI, offer a lot more in the way of replayability because they have a lot of game mechanics and there are numerous ways to completely break the games open. FFV in particular gets a lot of love nowadays because of the Fiesta, which is definitely worth checking out.

FFVIII is also a good source of obtuse mechanics and plot that makes a lot of sense in a fever dream.

It's hard to appreciate some of what Shadow Hearts: Covenant does unless you've played through the first game, but it's kind of a mess. On the other hand it's only about 20-25 hours, so it's not like you lose that much time. But even though both games feature vampires, you really wouldn't describe them as vampire games.

Okay - can someone recommend me a grindy hack and slashy-style game to play? I was about to go play through Recettear again because I just like grinding through random dungeons. Another one I was thinking of was like Ys: Origins. I think I played like 8 hours of that in the past. Hell, I like the dungeon fighting in the Dark Cloud games too.

So something in the vein of the dungeon grinding in Recettear, Ys: Origins, and Dark Cloud. Push button. Kill enemy. Repeat. Random dungeons are A+. Roguelike elements also A+.

Edit: the PS2 .Hack games are another example of the style of what I'm looking for.

One of my all time favorite games is Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor. It was my first non-Heroes Might and Magic game, and I know some people think it's kind of the shallowest of the 6, 7, 8 run, but I love it. I love the adaptation of a grid-based dungeon crawler. The only one I think that has done it better is Wizardry 8.

So that being said, I really want to play a really good first-person grid-based RPG that isn't: Wizardry, Might and Magic, Legend of Grimrock, Etrian Odyssey, Shin Megami Tensei, Ultima, Arx Fatalis, Bethesda games, Heroes of a Broken Land. The only reason being is that I've played all those. I've also played one for mobile that I hated but I guess is kinda popular, and another one for PC that was kind of a real-time-with-pause thing that... was... gosh, it should have been good but never clicked :\

I guess they're called Gridders. Let's assume I've played everything up until the year 2006. Maybe there's something I've missed since then.
