The Japanese sourcebooks for these games have so many weird details. Including what Units the Mavericks in X used to belong to, what the Units were, et cetera.

Also that Dr. Light is a Texan.

The tantrums that contest generated were the stuff of lunatic asylums.

I didn't know that guy made Rockman Neo. That explains why his art is so... I don't know how to put this, rough-edged most of the time.

You cannot imagine the :smug: Docahedron and I had to resist showing when we utterly obliterated Dickman in that MM9 contest. It was driven by public vote, even.

All that for a sketch from Inafune plus two sets of the MM and X Complete Works (one of which we gave away to one of the more humble aspiring MM fanartists, this one: http://notanotherzerofan.deviantart.com/), but the drama was worth it.

So I saw the MML3 demo video and the trailer, and I am speechless. On the one hand, it looks like it plays well.

On the other hand, I am going to be annoyed if the new character winds up overshadowing Volnutt. I'd rather not see a repeat of what happened with Zero in the X series.

(Zero is a woman, by the way.)

That's not arguable, that's a definite.

Though it should be amended to "military issue Reploids". It's kind of obvious Reploids were made to serve functions like the Robot Masters. "The Day of Sigma" shows plenty of civilian, humanoid Reploids. Probably manual labor guys.

Mister Roboto posted:

the Day of Sigma made it clear that Zero was a carrier for the Wily Virus all along. That seemed to sum up Zero's existence pretty succinctly.

The problem with this logic is that the Maverick Hunter X sourcebook rewrites what the Virus is entirely. Now it's basically a trigger that presents a moral dilemma to a Reploid, which makes them go insane since they were not given X's all-important Suffering Circuit, This Circuit more-or-less magically allows X to process ambiguous stuff.

In truth, MHX should be thrown out when discussing the overall X series, since it is a separate continuity. What with Cain being most likely dead after the first game and all. I make this error myself.

---

Screaming Idiot: Point granted. If I remember correctly, what the materials said is that Roboenza was forgotten, then it showed up again as the Maverick Virus. Kind of like how if we were to stop immunizing, we'd be hit by polio again.

Mordaedil: Too much Bob and George. There was never even a hint that Zero ever went on any sort of psychotic rampage.

Screaming Idiot: That was just an example. I cannot remember exactly what was said, the thing is is that I'm really not sure that it said Wily beefed it up in any way. It could entirely be that the Virus is literally Roboenza, full stop, and it just hit Reploids since they don't have the cure anymore. I just do not remember.

I think you're mixing up your sources here, since I don't remember MHX ever getting a sourcebook and the Suffering Circuit stuff is from Mega Man Zero Official Complete Works (where it was prefaced with "this stuff is from our early story concepts and isn't necessarily canon", which the fanbase convenienently ignored for some reason.)

Ah, you are right. I apologize, it has been several years since I've read anything about this stuff. Sources are bound to get a bit mixed up. What happened was that the information came out closest to Maverick Hunter X's release, so my head associated it with that game. I am now remembering it caused a hell of an uproar, hahaha.

Oh, a translation of the Japanese MM Zero official site is where I got the Virus = Roboenza bit. It showed up when MM Zero Collection was introduced. Considering the stuff about the "virus that appeared from space" only appeared after MM10 came out, you'd have to reach pretty far to think it is anything but Roboenza.

It's not so much free will. What happened is that the thing that lets Reploids deal with stressful and ambiguous situations (the Suffering Circuit copied from X) is imperfect. If it finds a situation it can't deal with adequately, the Reploid goes ax-crazy.

The capsule Zero was sleeping in was harboring a mutated version of Roboenza, which strengthened him but caused all other robots to go mad by targeting the vulnerability outlined above. How did this awfully specific mutation happen? Who the hell knows. Zero was made badly. People speculate that Wily somehow needed a virus to make him not nuts instead of just, you know, fixing the actual problem. It's why Zero acts so serene when you see him infected in X5.

Axl and such are immune to the Virus because their Copy Chip for some reason has a copy of their DNA that the Virus can't touch for handwavey reasons. However, that doesn't exactly stop them from going stark-raving bonkers from thinking too hard. Hence the "we can go Maverick at will" thing.

I'm pretty sure Inafune never let go of Zero. Reading the 25th anniversary artbook became "I didn't really have much to do with the later X games but damnit only I can touch Zero!" almost every entry by the end.

That's because Zero was originally supposed to be X, as the story goes.

Executives vetoed this, and Inafune has been obsessed with Zero ever since. That's why Zero came back and became the center of the story.

You have to understand that Inafune is a hack, through and through. He stole the design of the original Mega Man from his mentor, and basically everything else was lifted from Casshern.

Roll, for example, is based on Casshern's girlfriend. Sigma is a ripoff of Breaking/Braiking Boss, especially in X4. Vile is straight-up Boba Fett from Star Wars...

The other problem was that characters didn't really evolve in any way or gain significant new abilities, with certain exceptions like Axl gaining new entries on his Command Trigger.

One way they could have fixed this was, you know, by making it a MegaMan game by having you absorb the abilities of enemies!

I mean, admittedly Legends didn't have that, but it had actually cool special weapons. Pity you couldn't switch them mid-battle.
