Are Dyson vacuum cleaners worth it? I'm used to buying a <$100 POS every couple of years, but :siren:MY GIRLFRIEND:siren: is moving in and between us we'll have 6 cats and a dog so I think I'm ready for an upgrade. $700 seems pricey for a vacuum but they seems pretty slick and maybe I'll never have to buy another one?

Canadian Costco member here. I can verify that I have overdraft protection and they let me use my debit card, but not my credit card (mine's a Visa and they're always trying to get me to sign up for an AMEX, which is allowed). I've never had a secondary cardholder with a different address than mine so I can't comment there.

OK, two things to test.

1) arrange the icons how you want, reboot and then start in safe mode (F8 at startup, before the windows logo appears). If the icons are left the way you arranged them, run MSCONFIG, got to startup, disable all, reboot to normal mode. See if your icons re-arrange. If not, something in your startup list is causing the problem. Run malware scans in safe mode and try again.

2) If that doesn't work, as a test, try creating a new profile. copy your desktop icons from the old one, arrange how you like and reboot. Log back into the new profile. Problem solved? original profile is corrupted and needs to be repaired.

Thanks for the tips. My icons still reset on safe mode, even after the malware scans, but didn't reset when I made a second profile. I guess my next stupid question is how do I repair this profile?

So yesterday I get a call from the plumbing company that they have tried to recover $30 from this home warranty company and they have been unsuccessful. They are trying to get me to pay it.

What do I do here?

Not that it matters too terribly much, but from a time perspective, the guy was there for about 10 to 15 minutes so it's not like it was some huge job.

For $30 I'd say it's probably not worth the headache, but at the same time...why should I have to pay? It's the home warranty company that reneged on their side of the deal with the plumbing company. Eh?

It's all on them, you don't owe the plumbers anything. The plumbers are probably independent contractors though, so if you do pony up the $30 they might cut you a deal in the future.

I have three toilets in my house and over the last year all three of them have started doing a little half-flush every couple of hours which is slowly creeping up on my water bill. I am not a handy person and I'm getting mixed messages from people I know. Is it simpler/cheaper to replace the toilets themselves (toilet sale going on at local hardware store!!) or get someone to jigger with the flushers in the back? Alternately I'm hearing that it could be a water pressure issue, so how would I go about diagnosing and adjusting that?

You can replace all the moving/sealing parts in your toilet for ~$15. In fact, they come in a three pack, which might bring the price closer to $10. In a pinch, you can do it with your hands and not even use a wrench - I believe they are only supposed to be hand-tight. If there's no water leaking when you're done - you did it right!

I do this in every toilet in every apartment at every turnover. That $10 can save hundreds.

I'd recommend a series of passes with a vibro-lance while on a motorcycle. You can remove the legs to immobilize the beast, and potentially the stinger as well if you're quick. Once it's tired out you can return it to base at your leisure.

I work in a hospital that has a lock-down psychiatric unit. If the fire alarm goes off in that area then yes the unit front door and back stairwell automatically unlock. Patient rooms are locked by key and will remain locked. Every door in my hospital is fire rated for 90 minutes and we tell people that if they can't evacuate an area to close the door and wait for help, so patient locked in their rooms are safe from smoke, gases, fire, etc.
