As for good rpgs, anybody mention the Shadow Hearts games yet? I haven't played Koudelka (which from what I've seen is a mix of very slow-paced strategy rpg combined with resident evil), but I've beaten the rest of the games. The battle systems are pretty fun, with Shadow Hearts 1 making you do a sorta quick time event to pull off anything, Shadow Hearts Covenant adding in combos, area of effect attacks, and different kinds of attacks, and From The New World adding even more to the battle system to make each fight relatively unique and giving you the option to chain together all of your characters' attacks into an 8-turn long combo.

The games are a combination of lovecraft horror and comedy, the locations range from modern buildings of pre-world war 1 Europe and China (shadow hearts), world war 1 Europe and Japan (covenant), and post-world war 1 North America and South America (from the new world). The plot of the games are okay but the dungeons are always varied (especially from covenant and on), the battles are always tough but fair, and I can't think of another video game that has had Princess Anastasia Romanov be best friends with a gay pro-wrestling vampire who studies under the Great Gama. They're all PS2 games, I'd suggest checking them out.

Has anybody in here ever played any of the Laxius Power games or Laxius Force games, enjoyed them, and are able to say what it was about them that they enjoyed? I'm just really curious because I'm having trouble understanding why anyone would actually like these games outside of them catering to their fetish or catering to their views on the rights of women or due to just having really bad opinions on RPGs.

Not graphic, but probably shouldn't be looking at it at work.

Edit: For the record, the original game files weren't censored and the elf girl sarah's age is "16" and not "18" like I initially thought due to the lovely font.

Edit 2: Also keep in mind that this guy was successful enough off of these games to make his own game company :(

My favorite part is that the in-game portraits are stolen from various Fire Emblem games.

For real though, how do you even make success off these things? I can't believe I'm saying this, but if you want porn games, there are presumably ones made by people with something vaguely resembling artistic talent.

I honestly don't know. I mean, the laxius power games are all freeware due to him using art assets from different games and they're not even pornographic, the guy who made them just insists on most of the women wearing see-through clothing so the few times their portraits appear he has an excuse to draw them semi-nude. The developer is just a creepy guy who somehow built a dedicated enough fanbase. Seriously, everything about Laxius Power 1's plot so far has just been :psyduck: because of just how stupid everything is from a design point. It's a game about a 16 year-old saying "I'm too cool for school" so he leaves with his nudist girlfriend and a couple other best friends and they go through dungeons that look like they were designed by flailing around on a keyboard. They head for some fighting tournament thing, they get there after a lot of padding and awful dungeon design and awful dialogue and then the tournament is cancelled because the town in question is attacked. Then his elven girlfriend gets kidnapped so that the bad guys can inject her with "demoniac venom" which will make her extremely powerful and also "extremely submissive." Then they would have to chain her up and let a dragon gently caress her so that she can become pregnant and birth the world's strongest dragon. Then after they they would bring in a torturer to torture her until she feels no more pain and would not put up any fuss about any other task they have her do because she has gone through hell already. Thank loving goodness the bad guys are as incompetent as the writing is because they fail in their own plan because after explicitly describing what they have to do, they don't actually do any of it and just skip to bringing the torturer in and thats when Random and pals show up and rescue her. The entire game is the developer's self insert and his waifu's adventures and god drat does it get uncomfortable. I don't know how this guy got popular. Probably because he drew nipples and talked about how submissive Sarah is to the main character, I dunno.

For reals tho, I liked how One-Way Heroics did this where if you had healing herbs on you, you'd want to stay safe because certain attacks (mainly fire) could and would destroy your herbs, turning them from a useful healing item into a barely useful healing item. It'd also destroy your gems which are only good for making money by turning them into less valuable chipped gems. I don't think it did this with anything else tho, and items in that game were already precious as it is since there was no guarantee you'd find a shop or healing drop nearby.

man xenosaga's easy poo poo. Just go make lunch or something during the longer cutscenes and always put your points into str and stuff so you kill everything super quick. and make sure to get that one safe thing that you can only get first time around cause the door doesn't open if you come back in the virtual wordamabobber later so you can get erde kaiser.

Hardest part in xenosaga was the boss on the elevator in cathedral and then the boss with that rear end in a top hat where he'd do poo poo based on shion and jr doing poo poo or something idk, but putting your points in strength helps negate that poo poo.

xenosaga 2 tho, don't play that. It's such a tedious bore and by the time I got to disc 2 it had just made me burn out on it, it's just so boring and the battles are so tediously long ugh.

The worst part of xenosaga 2 was when I was stuck in the momo dungeon fighting enemies that momo was strong against or whatever but I couldn't use her because I was in her head so I had to use everybody else who sucked at fighting the enemies, and then for a long time kos-mos couldn't even use her points for anything to unlock any new whatever-the-gently caress talents or poo poo were called in that game and I forget why but it was all dumb and stupid and you had to run that dungeon like 3 or 4 times ugh.

The highlight of that game was when vanderkam came back and you fought him in a giant machine with a big ol' cannon on it on lost jerusalem or whatever.

What are some good/difficult turn based RPG's?

Shadow Hearts is pretty difficult at times if you don't do any of the sidequests that get you ultra powerful skills. In some cases, the optional bosses are harder because they'll have access to the same kinds of broken skills you do so it creates this weird difficulty where you're overpowered but so is the enemy.

What was the reasoning behind xenogears being the first game they released in that series again? Was it just supposed to be a "start in the middle of a conflict to get people interested" sorta thing?

FirstAidKite
Nov 8, 2009
Now I'm just curious about what the execution of the other xeno games would have been like. Xenosaga seemed doomed from the start and xenogears I guess had a rocky development cycle too if disc 2 is any indication, but I can only wonder if they could have kept that poo poo up for 6 or however many games they wanted to make.

Like, wasn't xenosaga 2 just the rest of xenosaga 1 that they had to cut out? And then they compressed the rest of their grand story into 3, idk the exact reason but I'd guess due to the poo poo with takahashi. I remember hearing about his wife being so sad about them being in control anymore. I wonder if anyone's ever gonna be crazy enough to try adapting that xenogears perfect works poo poo again, for the 3rd time lol

Xenosaga 2 was the rest of Xenosaga 1, rewritten by another team with details chopped out to make it less confusing and more accessible (lol). The original goal of the series was to have 3 story arcs take place across six episodes, two games per arc. In other words, episode 3 wasn't the result of compressing the entire rest of the series into one game. It was just the entire plot of what was originally planned as episode 2, forced into being the series conclusion. There may have been some details peppered in there from other arcs just to provide some closure for a few plot points, but we only got the "Shion Arc" of Xenosaga, just 1/3 of the overall story. I imagine Lost Jerusalem was going to be the next arc, either in the far, far future, or in the distant past during the time of Jesus, since apparently major poo poo went down then.

Shion sucks ans is dumb and I do not like her at all

I wonder if they could've made her likable if they were able to keep the development from going off track. lmao probably not.

FirstAidKite

I never played xenosaga 3, did they try to make shion likable or did they stop and just double down on her being a terrible person

Cause drat she was terrible. I know a few of the plot twists in 3 so I know about poo poo like I guess she created the gnosis or something, idk, she's responsible for all that dumb poo poo for some reason and that makes it sound like they might've just given up on trying to make her look like a good person.

One word of advice though: there is a point in time where you go to a town called Maramba. Before you dock at this town, go pick up subcannons at Sailor Island. There is a fight that requires you have them or else you're in for a load of pain.

My first time through the game I didn't have subcannons. It was terrible. It wasn't being forced to tank Recumen's lasers that caused problems, it was the fight with Belleza right after where I no longer had any healing magic or repair kits due to using them all during the Recumen fight

Other nice things about the skies of arcadia overworld: stuff in it changing as the game went on. It felt less segregated from the rest of the game cause you could notice small and large changes in certain key parts of the world as you explored it over the course of the game. Stuff like the various gigas bosses just chilling deactivated/dead after you beat them and stuff like that.

On the other hand, shadow hearts put all of its overworld stuff into a menu but I was fine with that too since it gave you some pretty good music to listen to and the menus obviously let you travel to the placed you need to go faster than a standard overworld.

I remember enjoying Terranigma's overworld, though the best one was the "underworld" overworld since they used the mode 7 to give the underworld a sorta hollow earth effect, so the top of the screen was just an upside piece of the overworld opposite to wherever you were currently standing.
