I've been tapped to teach a "World Politics" course for Spring. Rather than a bland survey, I've decided to theme it around the Cold War, yay !

I am balls deep in building the syllabus, but so far I am doing a sections on ideological origins, technology, the nuclear arms race, pop culture and the origins of the cold war. I plan to show the documentary "Atomic Cafe" at the start and finish the course with Dr. Stranglove. We will go all the way up through 1992. I'm pretty psyched about it, I hope my students will be as well.

The Atomic Cafe is a Netflix instant watch - woo hoo! Tonight is "We're All Gonna Die" night! Popcorn! Beer! Duck and Cover! It'll be like old times (minus the beer).

Doing it in Soviet era "JUST GET IT DONE!!" style equipment and engineering, that's loving crazy.

Had the N1 been slightly less lovely, they could have stranded a half a dozen cosmonauts on the moon before they got one back alive.

It might be good for when the aliens show up to have the dessicated mummy of a human in a space suit on the moon next to his lovely lunar lander that wouldn't ascend.

There would always have been the risk of defection, too.

I grew up in Las Vegas. Not sure what would have happened, other than being blown up by Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy.

I did get to feel some underground tests. We lived in NW vegas. They'd announce the times on the radio so people wouldn't freak out. We lived in a trailer, so everything shook pretty good. It was cool.

Could there have been timing issues, too, like making sure they don't both eject at the same time, to allow a margin of safety/clearance? Maybe the protocol was, "you don't bail until that light comes on." By then, minimal chance of the two ejections fouling on each other. I have no idea, just sort of guessing.

We don't have to buy new Chinese rare-earth magnets. There are already enough floating around in electronics in the US that we've imported, erm, from China. We just need an appropriate WWII-style donation campaign.
