I blame her editors. Inu-Yasha would have been perfectly fine if it had ended many, many, many, many volumes ago. Also I maintain that her earlier works were all mostly good.

(Also to me it seemed pretty natural to have "Hori really likes gruesome horror movies and is excessively violent all the time" also include "Hori wants her boyfriend to be violent sometimes," so that didn't really seem like it came out of nowhere to me. Oh well )
