I also prefer 1 to 2. 2 just feels weird now, like they tried making a tactical shooter but it's not quite there.

I’ve been looking at various videos of old FPS games I’ve missed and Solider of Fortune 1 looks fun. Am I wrong to assume this?

The other ones look poo poo though.

It is pretty fun. The gore system goes a long way to making it entertaining, but the game's also got a pretty decent set of weapons. Some of the realism settings (like the weapon weight system) can get in the way on the default higher difficulty settings, but the game also gives you the option to completely tweak everything difficulty-wise so you can, say, carry every gun in the game and make the monster closets spawn infinitely but they're also really stupid and have the aim of Star Wars stormtroopers.

The second game, like I said a page or two ago, is a really weird early 2000s attempt at a tactical shooter. It predates Call of Duty ironsights style gameplay and just features a ton of nasty hitscanners that will really kick your rear end while they throw grenades at you with pinpoint accuracy. SOF2 isn't completely terrible but the most fun is had setting the difficulty all the way down. The third game, not even by Raven Software, is an incredibly lovely and weird budget COD ripoff. If my memory serves me correctly, it was a completely unrelated game that Activision slapped the SOF name onto.

I thought it was fine, it really is just a reskinned Call of Duty. The stealth mechanics are incredibly simple, and the highest difficulty takes away health regen in favour of GE64 style armor vest pickups if that's your thing.

It make take some doing to find since Activision lost the Bond license almost a decade ago and all those games got pulled from digital storefronts.

I bet it won't even be unecessarily difficult anymore!!

Yeah I'm interested to see what, if anything, they change gameplay wise. Would love to see the forced stealth stuff get the axe because there's a lot of it, but it just looks like they changed the art style (not for the better) and not much else.

:laffo: The XIII remake is one of the most embarassingly bad releases I've played in quite a while. Even if it wasn't a barely held together, janky, glitchy mess every decision they've made with regards to "improving" the original just fall flat miserably, and I don't even hold the original in THAT high regard.

It looks, sounds, feels, and plays like a Unity asset flip. And it was delayed for a YEAR for extra development. Avoid at all costs unless you're interested in comedic value.

It does, however, improve one enemy damage output, which was one of the things that made the original rather frustrating to play. Also I dig Jones' redesign, they did good there.

I'm watching video of the first level now and it's just... how the hell did they gently caress this up this badly?

I don't even know if I can still refund if I bought it like 6 months ago. It's installing now anyway...

I remember the last couple of levels of SS3 being "better". Game would've been more fun if it let you rip with the Devastator shotgun.

Made it about half an hour through the XIII remake before giving up and requesting a refund. It's just too weird and jank. How the hell hard could it have been to just throw in widescreen support and upres the assets?

Also they don't even have proper multiplayer or bot match. Completely hosed the dog.

I still remember playing a fuckton out of the XIII demo when I was younger. It had the opening level of the game and that poo poo was burned into my brain. Even taking away the weird changes like no throwing knives and immediately granting you dual wielding, the shooting just felt completely off. Grafting on COD mechanics (superfluous ADS, sprint and limited guns) made it worse and completely loving up even the cutscenes was kind of the last straw. They're all in-engine, except the intro, which reuses the original movie file except now its framed as archival footage being watched by some random FBI agent.

Had to open a manual support ticket and ask for a refund because the regular refund system auto rejected it for being longer than 2 weeks, even though it was a preorder. :shepicide:

IIRC it's somewhat a bit of both. Charlie Wiederhold made an internet post a while back breaking down exactly how much of the E3 2001 trailer was faked and what wasn't and a good amount of it was. Then fast forward several years and 3D Realms forums hanger-on Frederik Schreiber ended up buying 3DR's remnants and was able to find and play the old builds claiming they were nearly complete. Whether or not they see the light of day at this point is completely up to Randy and he'd rather just vaguetweet about it once every few years than actually do anything.

Craig Goldeneye was fine. They actually put some effort into it with modifying the story to fit the Craig era; the worst part is excising Boris entirely. The way to play it is to crank the difficulty up which gives you the max amount of objectives in each mission and disables health regen. It's a bit simplistic in gameplay presumably because it was originally a Wii game. Bodies disappear instantly and stealth is largely "figure out the order in which to headshot each guard with your silenced pistol so they don't see each other before their corpses fade away".

Didn't that have a tie-in level to the movie coming out around the same time (Skyfall? I've managed to miss all the Craig films), but they didn't want to spoil anything so they released the last level of the game as DLC, then Activision lost the license so now you can't play the final level (not a bonus level, one that actually ties into the story) any more unless you buy the WiiU version, which was a later port so came out after the movie and had the DLC added into the base game?

It's extra bad because it takes a scene from pretty early in the movie and makes it a boss fight and removes all the context surrounding it.

It was a garbage bullet spongey mess at launch, with a really stupid and nonsensical enemy weakness system. The co-op barely worked as well. There weren't checkpoints of any kind so dying at the final boss encounter of a mission sent you all the way back to the start.

I think some of these issues were eventually patched but it was really rough out of the gate.

It had a really dumb vulnerability system where certain enemies would only take damage to certain guns, which were denoted by a bunch of very similar looking icons. It didn't make much sense and it was difficult to parse in the heat of the moment.

Looking at the patchnotes, there's a line that says "Took a variety of actions to reduce the feeling of enemy “bullet sponginess”" but doesn't specify further. I just remember early on trying to use a shotgun in close quarters and it was ineffective because of their stupid damage system and it was loving terrible.

Speaking of games with cursed Randy versions I finally got around to playing the console version of 007 Nightfire, which a lot of people swear is a both a really good FPS and one of the better ones that EA put out with the license.

It certainly peaks very early on with a couple of open-ish missions before slamming down hard on linearity and some binary pass/fail bullshit in the second half. The underwater stealth driving mission is absolute loving dogshit, same with the final level where you float around in space defusing nuclear missiles. There's also an extended sniper sequence in the game that feels like Medal of Honor's snipertown but worse - probably works better in an emulator with save states but I was working with original hardware.

Feel mixed on it overall but it's still better than Randy's version. After this the only Bond FPS that I haven't played would be TWINE...
