I had zero issues with the cliffhanger. I mean, they're telling a story, of COURSE there's going to be a 3rd one, so who cares? The game, I felt, was long enough, I was ok with them not shoe-horning in an earth level or two at the end of what we already got.

Plus, the main draw for Halo was always the multiplayer, and that was fiiiiiine in Halo 2. gently caress, I miss that game, and I wouldn't even consider myself a huge Halo fan. I'm just a fan of really good, local deathmatch.

I'm still kind of surprised that Halo went from being a Mac exclusive to not just a console game, but a Microsoft-owned console game.

I guess when you run out of money (because stuff like Oni didn't really sell brilliantly) you take the offers that come your way.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the free, undocumented hard drive formatting tool that was Myth 2. Well, I can't imagine Oni helped much either in the aftermath of that- they spun off a whole other studio to make it and it did pretty poorly if I remember rightly.

Isn't Steam's market share massive compared to those platforms though? Last I saw those numbers was a few years ago so maybe it is different now.

GOG I can see being a formidable competitor, but Origin? Far as I know people only use it for EA titles and opt for another service for other games.

Yeah, I suspect most people only bother with EA games on it, but they've probably got a decent user base from stuff like Mass Effect 3 that never got a release anywhere else and that sold really well.

Hey, does Unreal 2 count as an "early FPS"? Because I've suddenly got a hankering to play it and I'm wondering if it's worth me grabbing it from GoG.

The main thing I remember of the game was the "defend this point with laser fences and poo poo" sections, which I don't think I'd seen anything like in a game up to that point.

Random story: I remember playing the first Ghost Recon with some guy that I worked with, he gave me a copy of it which also included 'extensive gun mods', and he would talk for hours about 'how I modded <this gun> to be more realistic' and 'I had to change <other gun> because I needed something slightly cheaty, but still kind of real'. He went on and on and on, and I'm thinking 'whoa, neat! I wonder what these look like...'

I installed the mod, and from what I could tell, which he sort of later confirmed, all he had done was make the fire-rate faster and the magazine smaller (but larger for that 'slightly cheaty' gun, whatever it was), and you couldn't even see the drat things because there were no models whatsoever.

Anyway, that's my story of an old FPS. Still had a ton of fun, though.

Yeah, I remember getting a huge pack of new guns for the first Rainbow 6 (or maybe Rogue Spear) and while it had a picture of each gun to sit in your HUD, there were no in game models whatsoever and I just took the minigun all the time.

I remember before the Xbox launched in the UK, one of the people at the branch of Game I worked at bought one in the US and brought it in. After we played the opening of Halo there was a bit of a pause and the store manager said "Well that makes the PS2 look like a big pile of poo poo then."

I mean, it didn't really, but the feeling at the time was very much "gently caress, how did they manage this on a console?" At the time it was pretty staggering.

The most fun I've ever had an in MP game was a custom match in one of the Haloes where you respawned with a random weapon and kill counting on the scoreboard was disabled (by selecting one of the objective modes but everyone agreed to ignore it and just shoot each other). You're a better person than me, because the most fun I had in an MP game was in gun game mode in CoD Black Ops where I repeatedly stabbed people which caused them to drop back down the rankings.

That first mission really was cool. Up the lift, assemble your rifle, shoot the dude, drop the rifle, leave. It did a really good job of making you feel like a hitman from a movie.

I think you could do a Trespasser remake now and have it work as intended, and it'd be a lot of fun. I bet all the voiceover stuff from Richard Attenborough and Minnie Driver is either in terrible quality audio files or completely destroyed though.

Edit: The studio that made it was bought by EA, changed names three times and now does additional content for Battlefield games, so yeah, that poo poo is long gone.

Really annoyed the poo poo out of me. Though that one shotgun that used energy ammo was pretty cool.

Fun thing I learned, DOS Box does not seem to like having to work with a Japanese keyboard. Ah well a little key rebinding and Witchaven 2 is working just as crap as you'd think, but on purpose.

Is it wrong to be amused that not only does the game manual not want to tell you what leveling up does in detail, the person who made the mods that allowed Witchaven 1 and 2 to be sold and run on modern systems and who has a website all about Witchaven also does not include that information.

Also Capstone no longer refers to itself as the pinnacle of entertainment.

I would just like to add my voice to the bewildered masses. "Duke Nukem 3D does not exist quite how I want it so I'm going to buy the video game equivalent of a lobotomy and it's sequel, a game even Civvie refused to play" is a hell of a take. Godspeed, Barudak.
