Sleep Token have released their new album Take Me Back To Eden yesterday. This is probably my album of the year.

Track listing:
01. CHOKEHOLD
02. THE SUMMONING
03. GRANITE
04. AQUA REGIA
05. VORE
06. ASCENSIONISM
07. ARE YOU REALLY OKAY?
08. THE APPARITION
09. DYWTYLM
10. RAIN
11. TAKE ME BACK TO EDEN
12. EUCLID

It's hard to put one label on it, but "Metal" is certainly one of them. (But maybe Pop and R&B as well)

Just compare Vore
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zDjAtG_y5A

To Aqua Regia
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVE1ziLuSNg

About half the tracks were released as singles in the past half year, but they saved a few banger.

Links to various streaming platforms:
https://sleeptoken.lnk.to/TakeMeBackToEden

Can't wait to see them again at Graspop Metal Meeting.

I wanted to like this more than I do. There's definitely some successes (first two tracks, Vore, Ascensionism, last two tracks) but overall I don't feel like the parts all gel together super well. The formual's getting a bit predictable too. When it all goes together it really does rule but so much of it is waiting for the juicy bit

I finally sat down and watched and relived Obsequiae's set from Fire in the Mountains last summer and it's still one of the best memories of any band I've seen

Die Rettung fuer die Landwirte:

quote:

Robin Staps explains about the writing process behind Holocene: “The writing process of every album we’ve ever made started with me coming up with a guitar riff, a drumbeat or a vocal idea. This album is different since every single song is based on a musical idea that was originally written by Peter (Voigtmann, synths). He came up with these amazing synth parts that were already sounding huge in pre-production, and he sent me some of those raw, unfinished ideas during mid lockdown 2020… and while it was all electronic, it had that definite Ocean vibe to it. It made me want to pick up my guitar instantly… and so I did, and it didn’t take long until we had an inspiring creative exchange that was heading towards totally unforeseen but very exciting places.”

While Staps took Voigtmann’s initial ideas and “oceanized” them as he says, Voigtmann still pursued his own vision of these ideas, entirely without guitars. This resulted in an ambient electronic parallel album under his alter ego SHRVL, titled “Limbus.

That explains a lot actually.

I've been listening to Limbus, and it sounds good. Real ominous mood.

It's really great as well, I'm particularly enjoying the third track. Still regret not believing the hype when the s/t and things viral came out and never going to see them.

I actually bought a shirt. I always wanted one tbh just never occured to me to order, esp since they had disbanded and noone expected them to return. Now is the perfect time.

I found Khanate around 2005 and was blasting them in my late teens early 20s to cope with all the hosed up poo poo. This is one of the bands that picks you up and carries you through anything. Real music even though its more of a sonic attack than actual music.

All of their albums are AAA to me, every single one. My personal fave is Capture/Release but that's just because it was the first one I listened to.

I'd agree I think they are absolutely untouchable, on one hand I think they're the next step on from Burning Witch and on the other just something unique

I think I'm least familiar with Capture & Release, but I should change that.
The outro to Skin Coat is never too far from my consciousness though I love that song.
The squelchy electronic sounds are not usually my thing but they are so good in any Khanate song.

They're coming here this weekend (as is Moonspell) and I'd had both shows as definite must gos. But then I went to the venue they're performing at for the first time earlier this week to see Harakiri for the Sky, Ghost Bath, and Unreqvited and the venue was an absolute poo poo hole in a bad way with the worst acoustics and sound mixing i've ever born witness to. I'm just going to save my money instead of going and having a lovely time because the only audible thing is the god drat drums. This place is now hoovering up like 80% of the metal shows coming to the city and it's a really depressing future to think about.

That's a shame, it was a really fun show. UADA's a band that I want to see do weird, unique shows now, like a mid-eclipse set in the middle of a forest clearing or something. poo poo, there's one next summer. Maybe I'll send an email to the band and a prayer

Almost the same kinda venue problem here, tbh, it's a super small space and kinda muddy/awkward stage sizing. The club is actually part of a two-fer, there's a smaller "Underground" venue and a bigger upstairs club that mitigates a lot of the sound issues. But with unknown/uncertain shows, they start with the small club as the venue and upsize if needed to the bigger space, so Possessed & crew couldn't sell enough tickets to get into the better space

Where’d you see them? Headliners? Phoenix Hill? Jillian’s? If that place is even still around.

Headliners. Cool venue, acoustics weren't great but they were serviceable. They played like half of Kentucky, it ruled.

I feel the same but for Lorna Shore, the small amount I've listened to them, the music seems ok but the vocals turn me off. I've enjoyed a lot of black metal with arguably worse vocals but something about their vocals doesn't click with me.

Any recommendations for new metal? Constantly searching for new stuff and rare that something grabs me, relatively new bands that I've enjoyed a lot are Vektor, Slugdge and Archspire

Looking for a recommendation!

I really love early Exhumed's energy and tone on Gore Metal and Slaughtercult, and I'm hoping there's a few bands who just straight up ripped off those specific albums but with a twist. The twist can be anything honestly, whether it's splashes of slammy rhythmic drums, chugs, and a breakdown or two in the right place, or an additional exotic instrument, whatever.

Is there anything that matches the above?
