I'm glad for that. To me, power metal is perfect at what it does, and for the most part it seems largely above the race to the bottom many other subgenres of metal suffer from. It's not my favorite kind of metal, but I like how consistent it has been over the years. I like new ideas, but I have a hard time appreciating change for the sake of change. Making your music harder, darker, and tuning down the guitars another whole-step while making your lyrics even more incomprehensible -all for the sake of being different- is not exactly brilliant or interesting, and I can think of a few bands where that sort of philosophy has ruined perfectly good music. Power metal has a decent range of quality and sound, but it's consistent, and the formula doesn't seemed to get messed with that much, which I see as a good thing.

I realize tastes are subjective, but I was just remarking that most power metal bands seem to be quite above that race to the bottom, which I can appreciate because I don't care for it at all.

I gave Gallowbraid a listen and I fell in love, and it's total blue-balls that there is only one relatively short EP. I don't even normally like this kind of metal but God drat it's just good.

I work/intern at a small recording studio, and I get to meet a former member of Megadeth later today. I know there's a bunch of them, and this guy might have only been there as a session musician on The System Has Failed... but it's still kind of neat and I'm excited! It's one of the Jimmys that's been in Megadeth, I haven't been given a last name yet and I don't know why I'm posting about this, but if I get the chance I'm going to ask one or two dumb questions about the band/Mustaine, without a doubt.

It's not hard for me to believe that some of those power-metal bands think they are God's gift to the planet earth and that their music is not a joke. I really love Diablo Swing Orchestra's swing-ragtime-metal thing they have going on in a few of their songs, but I can't say I'm fond of the rest of what they do. Some of their songs are pretty drat terrible and boring, but I'm not sure anyone else is around that combines swing and metal so they'll always have a spot on my playlist.

Sometimes intros are good. Baroness' Blue Record has an intro and an outro that are pretty drat good. Bullhead's Psalm, and it segways really well into the second track, The Sweetest Curse. Baroness is for the stoner/doom thread I guess, but not all 'intro' songs are bad; just most of them.

Man, I hadn't checked in on one of my favorite bands, Kalmah, in a while. Apparently they're in the end-stages of making a new album, due for spring of next year. They've apparently already shot a new music video and are releasing lovely teasers like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tU79u3mZ4M Regardless, I love Kalmah. For The Revolution was a bit of a misfire, but otherwise I love their catalog and I would go so far as to say they're responsible for keeping my interest in metal alive. I don't know how this thread feels about them, but I think they're worthy of discussion. If you're not familiar with Kalmah, they're a melodic-death metal band that has managed to not regress into mediocrity unlike a bunch of big names in that genre. They also have amazing lyrical content. The lyricist has a solid grasp of English, but I wouldn't call him fluent, and the result are lyrics that sound like epic stories, or rather serious thoughts on life/politics that have been run through Babelfish. I really enjoy deciphering the lyrics and the intent. Although admittedly the lyricist has improved over the years, so it gets less funny and more awesome as they progress. I have no idea how well-known they are, so here's a bit of their stuff for the unfamiliar. They definitely deserve more attention than they get regardless. I knew that name sounded familiar, (Rigor Mortis), then I looked into them and I realized why. Back in the 80s my father was in a band, and they rented out recording space for long blocs at a time, and they ran into Rigor Mortis more than once while doing their thing in the studio. My father played in a band that is pretty much the furthest thing from metal (not kidding), but they jammed a few times with Rigor in spite of it. I wish I had some recordings of that to show, but it sucks that another DFW musician has died. I'll probably go ahead and give them a fair listen now. That singer is still not Tarja, but she made Ghost Love Score listenable, and if they can hire her permanently I might give them a real chance to convince me that Tuomas isn't a completely contemptible manbaby who can't write anymore. Tarja did a really good job of hiding the flaws of Nightwish with her voice, if Floor Jansen can do that as well then good for her.

That just sounded like all the *core music I've been avoiding since I've known about that kind of music. That band and song doesn't deserve the energy required to hate it. I'd rather still be mad at Metallica for almost everything they've made and done since 1990. And I am. Anyway, I need/want more Diablo Swing Orchestra-like music in my life.

Melodeath couldn't get mentioned without mentioning Kalmah, can it? I got into melodeath with Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom when you could still call CoB melodeath, but I discovered Kalmah one day, and if Arch Enemy is a hamburger, and Children Of Bodom is a 7/11 hotdog, then Kalmah is like Steak to me. Well, Kalmah's new album is out there -Seventh Swamphony. From the songs they've officially released, it can go either way. Deadfall was great. The other two had their moments but were largely pretty boring and sounded like a lot of the kind of metal I try to avoid. Maybe this will be good and tasty, last time Kalmah made an album they released their weakest tracks too, and 12 Gauge was really drat good in my eyes. Edit: Okay, this sounds rad as hell. I've been listening to the new Kalmah album quite a bit today. I really like it, but what stands out is that it really sounds nothing like Kalmah of the past. They Will Return is my favorite album of theirs, and it's disappointing to see them sort of abandoning the neat melodies and riffs that made those older albums loving cool. That said, this album wasn't a misfire at all. I'm not sure I'd classify it melodeath, but I do like it.

I am so indifferent to Amon Amarth it's almost painful. I don't hate them, but nothing they've ever done has grabbed me. Let's forego the No True Scotsman poo poo, people listen to metal for different reasons and have wildly varying tastes. I think people who don't like Kalmah are actually insane, but I don't run around chest beating about it vOv.

I'm dragging up an old and short discussion in this thread that's old enough I can't find the drat thing, but I want to revisit it. At some point a short time ago a discussion came up over Metallica's Lords Of Summer song, someone started talking about Kalmah, and I asserted that this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cs0QAwa4av4 Was very Metallica-like and arguably Metallica done right. Someone challenged that and I'll confess I couldn't quite put my thoughts behind my reasoning into words, but I was listening to this on the way home tonight and it finally cohered into something I can explain. First off, Kalmah is melodeath, and the era of Metallica I'm citing is very much 80s thrash, but Wolves On The Throne has a lot of Metallica staples in the music. Aside from the emphasis on harmonies and melodic work, which Metallica seems to eschew, a ton of the riffs scream like they came from the James Hetfield school of guitar playing. The main riff especially. The solo rings vaguely Hammet-ish to me, and the lyrics sound like Justice era James singing about politics. In my head, Wolves On The Throne is a song that might have been on the follow up to ...Justice had Bob Rock never stepped into the picture. If Metallica veered into harder thrash rather than going towards a more mainstream and hard rock approach, Wolves On The Throne or something like it with cleaner vocals could have been on there. This is all personal opinion and I can't believe I'm dragging up a discussion involving 3 people, but I was finally able to articulate my argument and I wanted to. A few reviewers for that Kalmah album also expressed some Metallica vibes, though I'm hard pressed to find them right now, so I feel validated in that. I must be loving crazy, I hear so much Metallica in Wolves On The Throne, but my ears are hosed I guess. I've listened twice, and I'd say it sounds like Metallica found a Kill Em All era demo, and re-recorded it. It's not as good as anything from that era, but it's just structured like it. The album name is not good, and that album cover is pretty atrocious.

death magnetic was better than it had any right to be, but the only song I still isten to from it is Suicide & Redemption, because it has some cool guitar solos and I like the buildup. It's bewildering though, that Beyond Magnetic was the content they cut, because all four of those songs were better than ones that made the final cut.
