This has been a good year for metal, IMHO. The new Suidakra (Book of Dowth) and Wolfchant (Call of the Black Winds) are both great. Reminds me of why I used to really like Mellodeath/Gothenburg. Gr31lly posted:Oh and if anyone wants an album that's modern, but very much heavy/speed/power metal then look no further than the new Portrait. What bands should I look into if my favorite band is Sigh and lately I've been listening to Summoning, Aes Dana, Kataxu, Morker and Agalloch. Because conventional wisdom says these are all black metal bands, but I tend to not like 99% of black metal people recommend me. Not Very Metal posted:I encourage everyone to check out Orchid, if they haven't done so already. Spot-on Sabbath worship, done well. Orchid are top notch. If you like them you should get the demo that Age of Taurus put out last year, its in the same vein if not a little more doom.

The best Blind Guardian song is the live version of Valhalla. In which Hansi decides he's done singing, and the crowd and the drummer keep going for a good two minutes. I know I've said this in the thread already. But man the new Wolfchant keeps growing on me. Its like everything I wanted from the new Amon Amarth album but didn't get.

Its also useful to remember that while the people in this thread tend to have wide ranging metal taste a lot of people don't. I have a friend who really likes bands like Dream Evil, Freedom Call and Weird Slough Feg, but who cant stand any of the more "extreme" genres of metal to the point that he doesn't even really like Black era Metallica or Soundtrack to Your Escape era In Flames (which is the kind of stuff I used to like when I was super into cheesy power metal). He's the kind of guy who I cant just drag to a random metal show on a weekend like a lot of my metal loving pals. Genre distinctions are very important to these kind of people, who don't have crossover taste.

Man, what happened to Ablazer? They released an awesome as gently caress demo a couple years back, and now just recently released a track from their new album and it bloooooooooooows. I don't understand why you would change your band concept from Wintersun-lite to a really generic "core" sound. Reminds me of what happened to Hibria who put out the best modern speed/NWOBHM album and then two albums of pure undiluted poo poo.

Only thing that comes close to it in the genre that I've heard was Temple of Shadows by Angra. Hibria's album Defying the Rules is 100% platinum coated awesome. The rest of their output is pretty sub-par, but that one album is really awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pyq8AKVfLC8 I have weakness for Power Metal about Sci-Fi. That album has so many catchy parts and things about each song that were memorable. Ever since then, they've just been suffering from Marduk Syndrome - nothing but fast riffs without a lot of substance. This is how I feel about Doomriders as well. The band is still great, and what I've heard from the new album is pretty good, but their first album (and that split they did with Boris) is just sooooooooo good.

You guys missed two of the greatest cheese metal concept albums ever: Freedom Call - The Crystal Empire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFahdfjZEHQ It's based on some book that I don't think has ever been published in English. Hibria - Defying The Rules https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8WjP7JXCMM It's about fighting ninjas on motorcycles in the post cyberpocalypse. There other work is extremely disappointing in comparison to how awesome this album is. See also: The Tain by Horslips

As far as metal concerts go this is one of the only ones I own (on blueray, it was insanely expensive when it came out) and its loving awesome. X-Japan were a really good rock/speed metal band from Japan, they went on hiatus in early 1998 and this was there last show ever with the original guitarist (who committed suicide or was maybe murdered). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NVEpqTTjkY Dat fuckin solo. There's also the live version of Valhalla from the Blind Guardian live DVD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_nmJgNcems In which Hansi is a big baby who doesn't want to do an encore, so the drummer and crowd do it themselves. I'm also a big fan of Iron Maiden's Rock in Rio DVD/album, but thats because its got great mixing for crowd vocals that actually captures the feel of being in a concert. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRlsHMCSaW0

I think the worst metal is when you can hear a really talented person in a band that sucks. My friend always jokes that he wishes Van Canto would break up so we could get 3-5 new metal bands with decent vocalists instead of one mediocre band with a shitload of them. Good example would be Artas who are mediocre even for generic metalcore but they have a great drummer who really needs to get into a better band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqWOuRTJg_Y Also bad is bands that release good poo poo and then just sort of peter out. Like Ablazer released an awesome demo in 2010: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWSCH6GsfqA and then after that just released some new stuff but it wasn't very good, were briefly signed to a label that tried to make them metalcore for like four months then they left and released more new stuff but it all sounds very Cradle of Filth/Soundtrack to your Escape era In Flames and doesn't have the really forceful punch their early stuff had.

I think the vocal work in Elvenking has more to do with symphonic metal fans eating that poo poo up. It's kind of like Nightwish in that I admit that the vocalist can sing well (I really like The Winter Wake barring like one or two songs) but it's clear he just doesn't do it all the time. It's also clear it's an artistic choice of some sort I just really don't like it (for the Nightwish example, Nemo sounds pretty awesome, Over the Hills and Far Away sounds silly to me in comparison).

It's sad that the recent crop of Metallica stuff has made me wish they were still a mediocre radio friendly hard rock band. In retrospect I would rather listen to Until It Sleeps than whatever that 8 minute long borefest of a song is. But Metallica has always had issues with riff salad. I remember back in the day reading an interview with the band where they were asked what they would do different if they could and they universally agreed "make Battery 5 songs instead of one song with 5 songs worth of riffs."

The new Sabaton doesn't sound like poo poo, actually this new track is probably the best song they've released in a long time (OK, OK, I actually really like their entire last album) it's like a perfect blend of synth obsessed era Dio and Rebellion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYWdgBtSM8s Between this and the new Epica and Edguy it looks like a good couple months for cheesy power metal. I really dislike Epica but this new "Kalmah meets Sirenia" thing they have going on their new album is pretty good in my book. The new Iron Savior wasn't awful either, just above average. It reminds me of Highland Glory (who are the best cheesy power metal band you've never heard of, Cradle to the Brave is a work of genius). A lot of Symphonic Metal bands get progressively harder as their careers go on. Epica, Nightwish, Sirenia and Amorphis all got substantially harder over their careers. Actually Dark Tranquility is a good example. They started out as pretty generic melodeath/Cradle of Filth stuff and ended up in a more black metal influenced place. There new stuff sounds more like Amon Amarth than anything. It's true that their earlier stuff was more heavy too, but it was pretty light on guitars. Circa 2002 "boring In Flames soundalike era": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU-ra1ffmTE Circa 2013 "still boring but less lovely era": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTkwuyb_PLc
