There's one ad that got inserted a while back into a few of my faves that just started in with some operatic singing. I have no idea what it was for because before they launched into their sales pitch I had already open palm slammed the skip forward button several times.

I don’t mind ads too much for my favorite shows if that’s how they make a living, especially when it’s in the hundreds of hours of entertainment for free zone. Easy to skip past.

I'm very grateful for the ones that put a little intro and outro tune to signal ad breaks, and especially for the ones that put a little beat or bit of music behind their ad reads so it's super obvious when to skip and when not to skip. And if they don't, oh well, even if I had to listen through without skipping, at least I know the money is going to the podcasters themselves unlike ads on TV or radio.

Yet other podcast apps download all the podcasts to their own servers--some got in trouble because they would then insert their own ads over the ads that were originally inserted in the podcast, although when Stitcher did this everyone yelled about it and as far as I know that's not happening--but then hilariously you sometimes get ads based on where the server is located for some of these server side download apps. I'm using Wear Casts to put podcasts on my smart watch so I guess it must just be coming from my IP and wifi. It threw me off when I heard it because not a single one of them are crypto people.

Yeah that’s true although I have heard of Netflix style shenanigans by some podcast networks regarding withholding listener numbers to avoid transparency about ad payouts. It seems Patreon has been a boon to podcasts as while I know it takes a cut several shows I’ve been listening to for a long time have mentioned being happy with it as a reliable source of income.

Like it was odd to hear left leaning shows doing ads for Uber or more recently for online gambling, as I’m pretty sure they’d veto cigarette or gun ads.

The Behind the Bastards folks have repeatedly said they have no control over what ads run on the show. Not sure what determines whether Robert himself does an ad read, which he's definitely done for Better Help and a few other craptastic companies. Those are definitely regrettable, since other show-inappropriate ads (like commemorative gold Reagan coins) are often very funny and will probably get zero business from the audience. Whereas Better Help etc are bad for insidious reasons.

I have an Irish SIM card while living in France so the ads I get in podcasts (via Pocket Casts) change according to whether I listen at home or outside, in a a way that can be jarring. Unrelated: anyone has science-y podcasts that go beyond generic pop science? I have a chemistry BSc with some biology background so I'm not completely clueless. I listen to The Drive sometimes but whether an episode keeps my interest changes based on the topic. Interested in chem/bio/zoology/astronomy but anything else could be interesting too as long as the podcast is good.

This Podcast Will Kill You is a really good science-y podcast on diseases. I particularly liked the Dancing Plague (#40) and Myxomatosis (#91, but not if you like rabbits...) episodes.

Castro is what I switched to after the sad, slow death of Instacast. Unfortunately, it's very unclear if Castro is starting down the same road of sad, slow app death. But it's a good app (for iOS, at least) if you have a combination of shows that you want to listen as they come out, shows that can just go in the queue, and shows that you want to start at the beginning that are older than your queue, owing to that it separates your inbox (available episodes) and queue and you can have per-feed settings.

I like podcast addicts too, but part of the appeal was finding out they do indeed have a shuffle option for playlists. Now I can be totally surprised by whichever episode of F-Plus or Extra Credit starts to play. I hit next, and "Butter Off Dead" started. Decoding the Gurus is indeed a great show. I did have to stop listening when I realized that I was inadvertently giving way too much attention (i.e., not zero) to clowns like the Weinsteins, who are the academia versions of incels. It looks like recent episodes are on other stuff though, so I might have to dip back in.
