There's one ad that got inserted a while back into a few of my faves that just started in with some operatic singing. I have no idea what it was for because before they launched into their sales pitch I had already open palm slammed the skip forward button several times.

I don’t mind ads too much for my favorite shows if that’s how they make a living, especially when it’s in the hundreds of hours of entertainment for free zone. Easy to skip past.

I'm very grateful for the ones that put a little intro and outro tune to signal ad breaks, and especially for the ones that put a little beat or bit of music behind their ad reads so it's super obvious when to skip and when not to skip. And if they don't, oh well, even if I had to listen through without skipping, at least I know the money is going to the podcasters themselves unlike ads on TV or radio.

It depends on which podcast app you use. Some just funnel data about you straight to servers and they insert the ad into the file of the podcast when you download it/while you stream it. Some don't do that directly, but they are able to tell from your IP when you stream/download the podcast where you probably are, and then insert the proper ad there. The Apple Podcast app tries to obfuscate this, but over time they're still able to build a profile on you via who knows how (resting your ID in the settings from time to time seems to at least get you to get more generic ads for a while in downloaded shows, but streaming shows, you still get profiled). Yet other podcast apps download all the podcasts to their own servers--some got in trouble because they would then insert their own ads over the ads that were originally inserted in the podcast, although when Stitcher did this everyone yelled about it and as far as I know that's not happening--but then hilariously you sometimes get ads based on where the server is located for some of these server side download apps.

It's hosed.

For what it's worth the tech doesn't seem to work if you listen to a show on dead metal like an old ipod classic, you get generic ads then.

I'm using Wear Casts to put podcasts on my smart watch so I guess it must just be coming from my IP and wifi. It threw me off when I heard it because not a single one of them are crypto people.

Yeah that’s true although I have heard of Netflix style shenanigans by some podcast networks regarding withholding listener numbers to avoid transparency about ad payouts.

It seems Patreon has been a boon to podcasts as while I know it takes a cut several shows I’ve been listening to for a long time have mentioned being happy with it as a reliable source of income.

That’s a good point wonder if some ads are mandated by the network? Like it was odd to hear left leaning shows doing ads for Uber or more recently for online gambling, as I’m pretty sure they’d veto cigarette or gun ads.

The Behind the Bastards folks have repeatedly said they have no control over what ads run on the show. Not sure what determines whether Robert himself does an ad read, which he's definitely done for Better Help and a few other craptastic companies. Those are definitely regrettable, since other show-inappropriate ads (like commemorative gold Reagan coins) are often very funny and will probably get zero business from the audience. Whereas Better Help etc are bad for insidious reasons.

I have an Irish SIM card while living in France so the ads I get in podcasts (via Pocket Casts) change according to whether I listen at home or outside, in a a way that can be jarring.

Unrelated: anyone has science-y podcasts that go beyond generic pop science? I have a chemistry BSc with some biology background so I'm not completely clueless.

I listen to The Drive sometimes but whether an episode keeps my interest changes based on the topic. Interested in chem/bio/zoology/astronomy but anything else could be interesting too as long as the podcast is good.

I've mentioned both the Wild Episode and The Common Descent Podcast in the past and they're both my gold standards for different reasons. These are both zoology podcasts.

What I've said before:

100YrsofAttitude posted:

I’m going to suggest the zoology series I love and I’m always happy to plug:

The Wild Episode is a thoroughly researched slowly updating show with a small back log and high production values that focuses on seriously unique animals. Some can be as famous as say the colossal squid, but the host, who has a soothing accent, really brings up some facts that are great and frankly new to me. I want him to replace David Attenborough.

The common descent podcast Two nerdy scientists with a background paleontology and evolutionary science talk just about that. It’s great for a layman and cover topics from individual species, to geological eras, extinction events, famous biologists, to biomes. More often than not they talk fossil animals. I don’t listen to every episode but you can quickly see the ones that you may like.

What I like about these three is that none are just reading Wikipedia like so many other zoology podcasts and they have character to spare.

100YrsofAttitude posted:

What’s this?

If you want biology/zoology info I can’t recommend The Wild Episode, Common Descent Podcast, and Weird Animals podcast enough.

The former does about 30 mins on unique creatures around the world from small to big. Dude absolutely chooses things you’ve likely never heard of. His voice is great and it feels Attenbourgish. It’s not the most frequent updater but it’s steady and really good. I never subbed to anything but if he did do it I would in a heartbeat.

Common Descent is less narrative and more technical but extremely accessible as that’s the point. Pretty much on evolutionary biology they cover all sorts of topics but particularly animals and paleontology. Episodes, say the latest on monotremes tend to do an hour on the current diversity and then an hour on the fossil history. The hosts are nerds and fond of puns but they’re affable.

The two really hold up. The Wild Episode is a genuine gem. I highly recommend it and his blog posts really go into detail on the matter. Common Descent while accessible won't dumb it down either, you'll get your science fix. It's definitely a more à la carte experience but I think you can get behind it.

Castro is what I switched to after the sad, slow death of Instacast.

Unfortunately, it's very unclear if Castro is starting down the same road of sad, slow app death. But it's a good app (for iOS, at least) if you have a combination of shows that you want to listen as they come out, shows that can just go in the queue, and shows that you want to start at the beginning that are older than your queue, owing to that it separates your inbox (available episodes) and queue and you can have per-feed settings.

I like podcast addicts too, but part of the appeal was finding out they do indeed have a shuffle option for playlists. Now I can be totally surprised by whichever episode of F-Plus or Extra Credit starts to play.

I hit next, and "Butter Off Dead" started. The episode does a cold open with some Something Awful keto infamy.

Decoding the Gurus was my most listened podcast of 2023 and I'd highly recommend it to anyone, but the Harris interview really let him run roughshod over everything. To some extent, it resulted in Harris telling on himself through sheer blowhardiness, but I'd have preferred more pushback.

Yeah, they've definitely put in effort to vary their content to keep it from being Weinstein Watch.

A recommendation along the lines of DtG is actually where I first heard of DtG: the I Don't Speak German podcast. They do a similar thing, but with focus on shining a light on fascists rather than gurus. I got the impression they were a tad miffed at DtG as the Harris interview came out not long after the crossover episode with IDSG and IDSG is very anti platforming fascists and the fash-adjacent (of which Harris is), but DtG has an open "right to respond" and a different assessment of who exceeds the bounds of acceptable discourse. IDSG has had low output for the last year, unfortunately, as the hosts have had life get in the way, but their back catalog is absolutely worth a listen.

Agreed. Fair warning though, IDSG covers some of the most despicable people around (actual Nazis) and often plays clips from Nazi podcasts, so you're gonna hear some unspeakable poo poo from time to time. Not the best show to listen to without headphones, lest someone overhear at an inconvenient moment. But cohost Daniel spends a ton of time researching those people so that we don't have to, and he has a lot to teach about them.
