rockamiclikeavandal posted:The best history podcast I have found is "In Our Time" from BBC4. The show is about everything but they also sort their archives by history, philosophy, science, etc. You can find it on itunes or on the main site: I've ran out of hardcore history to listen to so I've been working my way through some of these. I like the show but I do with it was a bit longer. It always feels very rushed.

Pseudopod is a horror short story podcast, if you haven't already listened to that. It's pretty hit or miss though, and sometimes when it misses it misses really hard. Also I turn it off when the story's over because I personally can't really stand the host's ramblings.

Zeta Taskforce posted:Does anyone have any recommendations for a good science podcast? I already listen to Astronomy Cast, Radio Lab and Science Friday. Science Friday usually has some good pieces, but it seems to be going soft lately. I'm getting tired of listening to yet another way someone used DNA to make art, or how someone made another musical about something or other with a science theme. I love Astronomy Cast and Radio Lab. Looking for something where they really dig into a topic along the Astronomy Cast theme of not only what we know, but how we know. I'm not interested in paranormal or anything that is too slick or over produced, just normal people who are passionate about something. I don't know if it's up your alley, but the journals Science and Nature both have their own weekly podcasts. The topics they cover are as broad as those covered by the journals, but they're never "soft." I don't listen every week, but I will check in on the Science one when I feel like it. I work in a science field, and it has the added bonus of sometimes letting me know about a article of interest that I would have missed otherwise. For what it's worth, I feel the same way about Science Friday, I like Ira for nostalgia reasons (Newton's Apple), and I feel pleasantly surprised when I catch an ep on the radio, but it gets grating to listen to every week. Too much fluff. edit: I almost forgot the main thing that drives me crazy about Science Friday. The callers are so goddamned awful sometimes. Even when I listened regularly I'd have to skip that part. Drunkboxer fucked around with this message at 03:24 on Dec 1, 2014 |

ChetReckless posted:I just started this (a couple episodes in now) and I can't agree more. It's naturally funny and easygoing in a really charming way. Yeah I like it a lot too. There's not really a good place to discuss it here though. I feel like if a thread was started it'd just stagnate too unfortunately.

Harminoff posted:Anyone listening to True Crime Guys? It's a newer true crime podcast however is quickly rising to the top of my list of best true crime podcasts. Kind of similar to True Crime Garage however seems like they have a bit better chemistry than them. They both read a different book on the subject so they each bring a little different information to the table. This is an indirect response to this but I think this forum could probably support a true crime/"horror" thread. There have been a bunch of scattered posts about various true crime podcasts and generally spooky shows (outside of the Serial thread). There's what Harminoff is talking about, there's Last Podcast of the Left, My Favorite Murder, and others. There's occult/conspiracy/bullshit/ghost story stuff like Astonishing Legends, Lore, Real Ghost Stories Online, also Last Podcast does this a bit. There's reading/lit/film/discussion podcasts about fiction like the The H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast, Bloody Good Horror, Pseudopod and others. I feel like this could all go under one tent, and wouldn't mind making an OP for it if there was enough interest, if people were willing to help with the some of the ones I'm not as big a fan of. What do you guys think?

GobiasIndustries posted:So, Missing Richard Simmons was really cool for the stories from people who's lives he changed so much for the better, but I also thought it really was lovely that the host showed up at his house multiple times despite not being wanted and traveling to meet his brother when his brother clearly did not want to talk to anyone. I feel like the podcast would have been so much less lovely and harassing if he just talked to people who were touched/improved by Richard without showing up at his house and taking surprise visits to his family. Same. I do think he figured that out by the end though. Would have made a better one-off episode of TAL or something.

GobiasIndustries posted:Yeah, but he didn't he say he had all the episodes recorded before release? That just makes him more of an rear end in a top hat. Richard Simmons up and disappearing from almost everyone in his life is really sad and disappointing and not a great thing to do IMO, but like, after the police went Richard's house and said he was totally fine and just wanted to be left alone, why even release it? I feel like it was released with the expectation of listeners that he talked to Richard and then at the end was like 'nope but here's my story of harassing this celebrity' I think the first few were, definitely the last one wasn't made ahead of time though. He said in the last ep he recorded something before but decided to not release it based on recent developments (the police visiting him a second time being the main one). I think he just eventually became aware of how creepy the whole thing was and pulled the plug.

I love getting incredibly loud casino ads inserted into quiet podcasts so I can experience the ear splitting pain of being in a casino while I’m walking the dog
