Norwegian centre-back Claus Lundekvam played 357 league matches for Southampton from 1996 to 2008, and after he was forced to retire at 34 because of a serious ankle injury he fell into depression. He started drinking and using cocaine and other drugs until he was arrested for drunk driving and domestic disturbance before a UK court ordered him into rehabilitation. Since last year he's moved back to norway to work as a pundit on tv, and he's brilliant and gets all sort of exclusive deals to visit old Southampton players (a lot of players have been at Southampton) and managers at their training grounds and it rules.

He's a loving idiot that's what he is. It's remarkable that he even got a new chance for a team as good as Stoke, but it looks like he's well on his way ruining what he has there as well.

Saw a great french produced documentary about match fixing in football and the gambling industry. There's some people from Interpol, UEFA and economists explaining the process in great detail. It's incredibly interesting to see how the chinese mafia runs it all in cooperation with italian, balcan and turkish mafia to launder vast amounts of money. The interviews with the italian players who got busted for it is great as well, and just goes to show how corrupted the sport is at some levels. The amount of money in sports gambling is mind boggling. Also, I didn't know that match fixing was such a big problem in Belgium. Anyway, it's called "It's a Bet! Sports and Gambling", and you can see the first 18 minutes for free at their website: http://sales.arte.tv/detailFiche.action?programId=2727&request_locale=en

Bacon of the Sea posted:There was a stat from the match fixing blurb about how one of the questionable games had £1.6m of suspect bets, but the largest bet was £60k. That's a lot of people in the know. The chinese and hong kong mafia has something like 10000 people making small bets for them, and its always live betting to it's almost impossible to detect. The documentary also showed some stats about the 2008 olympics had bets worth a total of 900 million euro and the 2011 CL final alone having over 1bn euros worth of bets.

serious gaylord posted:Match fixing at the highest level is a lot less prevalent than in the lower leagues. Mostly because to get a player in the Top divisions to risk their entire career will cost alot more than a 5 grand. There's been cases in italy, spain and other big-ish leagues where top flight teams have had problems paying their players for months iirc. It's mostly in the lower league, and most often in central/eastern europe where a lot of these things can go under the radar. I saw a documentary about it once that said Belgium has or just to have big problems with match fixing in their lower leagues.

serious gaylord posted:Yeah I can imagine its very prevalent in lower divisions due to the fact that its much harder for a player to turn down someone offering him 5 grand to throw a match when thats as much as he earns in a month. I know players who play amateur football in the fourth and fifth tiers of the regional football leagues in norway that regularly receives messages from mystery profiles on facebook and twitter promising them money to lose matches, concede a lot of goals, get sent off etc. It's unbelievable that it's even possible to bet on matches from these leagues.

Loving Africa Chaps posted:Yeah I don't get how that's possible. Surely the gambling companies are sensible enough to realise that if more then £100 gets placed on a match like that it's dodgy as gently caress and they should suspend betting. In this case the most dodgy thing is that all players know each other and will always easily know all sorts of information and can bet on their own or other matches without being caught because no one cares.

Hegav posted:It doesn't make any sense at all to assume that PL matches aren't fixed. It's pretty much the same reasoning as "there's no doping in football so there's no reason to take blood samples". All it takes is for someone to make an not too obvious own goal or maybe get a red card. While I agree with your first sentence I wouldn't really compare it doping. Doping is much more organized on a club level while match fixing is more an individual thing. The risk is much higher in the premier league for both the players and the ones organizing it IMO. Premier League footballers in general are much better paid than players in the other top leagues, they get their wages on time as agreed and there's fewer financial issues in every aspect of the game. You can have a long and good career in the three highest tiers of english football with the chance of earning good money, I'd say that reduces the risk. Match fixers specifically goes after players at clubs, leagues and/or countries with known financial and social problems. There's no coincidence that most of the match fixing cases that's been exposed the last few years have been in southern and eastern europe where the european financial crisis (and the corruption that follows with it) is a lot bigger than in northern european countries. With all that said, it's still naive to believe match fixing is a problem in england but I don't think it's much of an issue in the Premier League, but more in the lower divisions. JFairfax posted:Matt Le Tissier already admitted to kicking the ball out for a throw in as soon as a game kicked off. I remember Claus Lundekvam speaking on tv saying it was usual in the PL to arrange with the other team before kick off for the first throw in or free kick and then earn a nice little chunk of cash on it.
