Speaking of time estimates, I recently shotgunned the whole thing over the course of a few weeks, and out of curiosity I read a few of the pages earlier in the thread (before skipping to the end, a privilege that I now savor wholeheartedly) and some of the posts people were making in October 2011 were... well, pretty good: marsattacks posted:Obviously when Homestuck ends (a good six or seven months from now), Hussie will immediately begin posting his next Magnum Opus, and it will be so wonderful all memory of Homestuck will be stricken from our minds. Plom Bar posted:Can the posters who are 20+ please just take a moment to appreciate the smugness of this person who has never heard of Yellow Submarine? Hm, 20 years is less than half the amount of time since the movie came out. I can't exactly fault someone for not just being knowledgeable about a band (though an admittedly very popular one) who broke up 40 years ago, but instead for not knowing about one of their particular ephemera, and this is coming from someone who is 21 and has seen the movie.

I marathon-read the whole series a few months back because I was really bored and the Michigan cold makes my coastal blood run slow. I also have poo poo for memory and can barely remember anything that happened, and have spent a lot of time lately re-consuming media from years past in order to reevaluated it and as a pastime. This speaks horrible things about my future, I'm sure.

I mean, if you're going to develop this idea into one with plenty of character development, then a place where characters hung out for 3 years without us seeing most of it is going to be the most wide-open place to show any of that.

It's like he finds SBAHJ funny 100% at face value, so when he goes to recreate them he gets so close but is still miles away from capturing the original magic.

I feel like the content of Green's SBAHJ is fine but he doesn't go the distance to make it even shittier when he's done making the comics, so instead of something closer to the original we get something that hits all the notes of "a comic that is pretty bad, but ironically" without all the effort to make that irony wrap it back around to funny.

It seems like the joke is more supposed to be that he's more concerned with arguing for the sake of winning an argument than actually helping the people he's arguing for. That's why he puts down Mituna for being a bad example of a handicapped person, even though that makes no sense. Also I'm pretty sure you're supposed to laugh at him, and by arguing about him, we're letting him win.

Arsenic Lupin posted:It's much better than that. Dave has accepted that Bro was a horrible parent, that Bro was a horrible role model, and that Dave gets to make up his own definition of (A) being a man and (B) being a hero. I thought at the beginning of the 4/22 updates that Dave had just given up on heroing; it's looking like, in fact, Dave gave up on being other people's definition of a hero and began creating his own. This owns because from what we know of Dirk, he was always going to do the things that seemed so masculine about Bro (really good at fighting, lovely swords, being a 90s coolkid, constant ironic detachment from emotion and at times reality) but these things don't change the fact that he's also extremely gay. Zoe posted:So through all those I was just sitting there going drat Dave just get to the point just tell him you're gay. But then he says he isn't gay? The entire point is that gay doesn't mean anything and we've been programmed to think about sexuality and romance in very specific ways. Gay doesn't really mean anything when you're on a spaceship with a bunch of members of an alien race and your sister, and the thought process that he's trying to get out is that maybe it never did because the only thing keeping us acting how we act is history and tradition. Fister Roboto posted:OK I am definitely not reading all these god drat words about inconsequential tumblr bullshit. Who What Now posted:People are forgetting the bar none most important part of being a Mary Sue is that they are a direct stand-in for the author, usually literally being the author themselves. Hussie in the comic is a Mary Sue, Jade is not. Dave is closer to being a Mary Sue than Jade because Hussie says Dave speaks in the manner closest to himself. Hussie isn't really even a Mary Sue because he's not really a protagonist with complete control of the comic. He's not even known by most of the characters.
