I read that it was the influence of the shroud of Turin as it made its way across Europe. Once it was canonized by the church as the real, factual image of Jesus Christ, every single thing in it became accepted as 100% correct. So you had stuff that was just a byproduct of the staining process being depicted as anatomical details, which artists would then faithfully copy from each other.

Ren and Stimpy was another one of those comics that ended up being way better than it should have been. I remember one issue that was a choose your own adventure book set in space. It was full of time loops and scenes that read completely differently depending on how you got to them, they'd clearly put a ton of effort into writing it despite the fact that their target audience would have enjoyed it just as much if every panel was just Stimpy cutting a fart.

Correction, it looks like fleshtone in every photo because the gold sheen doesn't photograph. Looked perfectly respectable to everybody who had to design it, approve it and wear it, and looked like that to the rest of the world who saw it on camera. It's the little things that make life worth living.
