I think the best part of Dawn's marketing is the title treatment. It's not used in the actual movie, but it's a really inspired touch to use a sort of military/sci-fi/action typeface instead of a standard "horror" one. It really conveys that this is not a typical horror film- it's something unique.

(And openly saying how much the show (Seaquest) he was on sucked may not have been the best idea even if it was a pretty baller move.)

The one drawback is that since Blu Ray cases are smaller and slimmer it doesn't look as much like a Beta tape (i.e. it's less bulky), but it's still a cool effect. More importantly the BR transfer is so loving gorgeous. Maybe it's partly because it's a movie I've seen a bunch but the step up in quality from the already-great DVD is astounding.

I sort of think of the Jodorowsky Dune as something that could never really have happened- too much money required, too many volatile personalities, a hard sell for distributors, etc. But it's a wonderful dream.

mind the walrus posted:I love the people going on and on about the music and over-the-top style of a Baz Luhrman flick that's adapting a story all about partying and decadence covering emptiness. Of course it's going to cater to the modern club and pop scenes and evoke the madcap parties of today and yesteryear--aside from being great marketing at getting people into seats it might actually make one or two of them think after they see just how unhappy almost everyone in The Great Gatsby really is. Not to mention, we already had a straightforward, respectful adaptation of the source material, and it was received with a shrug. Time to go balls out.

It's also a near-perfect brand logo, which plays into the whole idea of the park being a consumer attraction. It's something they can easily slap it on a plastic lunchbox and sell it. (Pounds table) You're selling it. Honestly that period in time was some kind of peak for graphic design in movie poster art- they achieved this nice balance of minimalist yet detailed enough to evoke something.

Prometheus is a sci-fi thriller. It's got some scary bits but it's nowhere near the out-and-out intense horror experience that Alien is- there's as much humor and sense-of-wonder-in-a-perverse-way and other elements.

Half the audience will be there because of the second poster (or knowing what the movie's about) and the second half is going to be there because preteens like Selena Gomez/their moms thought it would be good for them based off the posters because it has a Disney Channel star in it. I dunno, kids have a harder time sneaking into R rated movies than they used to. drat Columbine. (This is assuming that Harmony Korine doesn't make a PG-13 movie.)

Robert Denby posted:Not only that, they were doing all of that on the same piece of film. They'd rewind the camera, do an exposure, rewind again, do another exposure, etc. It was either that, or shoot all the elements on separate pieces of film, and composite them via optical printer, which could be just as big a pain in the rear end. Plus a printer would degrade the image quality more- you can see it in a lot of pre-digital process shots, everything's more grainy. (The old Star Trek was especially bad for this, which is why they re-did all the effects for the HD release.)

Why are the beast's tusks coming from behind its tongue? Not to mention that it makes it look like the movie is all about the beast when it obviously isn't. It's still better than the other ones I posted, but I wouldn't call it good. 13 is the worst, 3 comes closest to being a decent poster.
