Blacksad
Publisher: currently Dark Horse
Why I Like It: Gritty detective stories starring basically humans with animal heads. The hand painted art is realistic and highly detailed while remaining incredibly expressive and cartoon-like.
Good Jumping On Point: Dark Horse collected the entire series in one book that's currently in print. The fourth book "A Silent Hell" hits stands July 24.

I was told to try this out in the Recommendations thread and I have to say it's absolutely fantastic. Being brand new to comics, I'm not sure how much weight my opinion really has. But my love for film noir (and to a certain extent, Disney) translates over to Blacksad in a big way. Real excited now for the 4th book out this summer.

Title: The Massive

It's out today! Go buy it! Don't buy lovely comics!

You sold me. I just went down to my local shop and picked it up.

On top of the fact that a good friend of mine loves Brian Wood, I thought I'd give this a shot. Appreciate the reminder!

So I walked into my local shop and noticed this on sale for $20:

Is it worth recommending? I've only heard of Eddie Campbell from his work in 'From Hell'.
Has anyone here read this?

I have been lending saga to friends who only bought trade paperbacks before. For three of them it is the first monthly comic they started buying. I realize that it is not to everybody's taste but it seems to be a dammed good gateway into the hobby. I really hope the quality keeps up.

I was just about to post that as I've dove headfirst into comics a few months ago, Saga is the first ongoing monthly comic I've started, and it really is a great entryway into the hobby in general. I totally see the appeal of anticipating each month and I can only imagine the money I could've spent over the years. I've lent Saga to my female co-worker, who isn't normally into comics either, and we both can't take waiting each month for the next issue. It's fantastic stuff.

Since then I've bought Y: The Last Man & Ex Machina off a friend who was selling all his comics to move away. I plan on starting Y very shortly - after I finish Brubaker's Criminal :).

Crossposting this from the shelf porn on display in the Hardcovers thread. (Yes, I realize there is no shelf nor are these hardcovers.)

I'm reiterating just how good this series is. Every issue thus far has been outstanding and I'm wishing these came out every week! From beginning to end, it is truly captivating with gorgeous artwork. The writing has fully immersed you in this world and nothing feels out of the ordinary at any point. There's no excuse not to check this out as it's still so early in the series. I'm surprised there isn't more discussion on this.

Anyone else happen to pick up Black Kiss II #1 today?

To get my feet wet, I was browsing through the comic shop today and grabbed a few random #1 titles, also including Infected #1 and Beasts of Burden: Neighbourhood Watch (One Shot).

I had no real idea of Howard Chaykin and his previously controversial Black Kiss - but wow I was definitely blindsided by what I just read. Very perverse and over-the-top, and not something you'd want to read in public. I've just read that it was held back today at UK customs! I'm still trying to wrap my head around it, and debating whether or not to continue the miniseries.

Chaykin has done some pretty good stuff, look at the first 20 or so issues of American Flagg for some AD2000, Judge Dredd inspired stuff about corporate cops in the future. In the first issues that art is mind blowing and truly deserves the term "hyper kinetic".

You've got me looking up American Flagg now - very interesting! Doesn't seem like it will matter that I'm not an American either. If I buy the first trade I'll get back to you. Thanks!

Just a quick question.
With The Massive #3 out last week and Saga #6 out today - both are at the end of their particular story arcs.

Is there a long break between each arc? I don't want to have to wait like 6 months before the next issue is released - it's hard enough waiting month-to-month!

Youve sold me on this and debating on Pawn Shop or not - drat Kickstarter is addicting once you're browsing around. Thanks for the heads up!

You skipped the letters page? The Saga letters page is amazing, you should go back and read them.

Seconding this as the letters are nearly as much fun as the story itself.

I've got Jeff Lemire's Underwater Welder arriving in the mail any day now from Amazon, and hearing such praise regarding Essex County & Lost Dogs, I can't wait to read it. Has anyone else read this yet?

Being from the essex county area I should probably get around to reading that too!

Anyone else pick up the first issue of Snapshot from Image? My local shop had one left in stock when I stopped in about a half hour ago. Being new to comics and having never heard of Diggle and Jock, it was the noir aesthetics of the cover that caught my eye. Being just a 4-issue miniseries I figure why not give it a shot?

The guy behind the counter then told me to read The Losers ASAP. Is the comic series better than the movie released a couple years back? The omnibus editions are going for $15 apiece on amazon which isn't bad at all.

Saga #10 may be my favorite and most emotional  chapter of the series so far. This has yet to disappoint - amazing in every aspect.

I finally got to read this weeks saga and I'm pretty glad that lying cat didn't die.

Absolutely I think everyone's with you on that one! *whew!*

I read the first 3-issue miniseries of Strangers in Paradise on Comixology and it was good enough to get me to grab that paperback omnibus coming out in June - even with the $40 shipping to Canada!
I've read that the first volume isn't even close to how good the series becomes so I'm really looking forward to this set arriving.

I just picked up #1 with the Frank Miller variant cover, so looking forward to reading this!

Speaking of 100 Bullets, I had bought the Deluxe Hardcover Book One of 100 Bullets years ago, and never got around to buying the rest - only now realizing the rest of the hardcover releases are out-of-print.
Does anyone know a best place to find these at a reasonable price - particularly Book Two? Amazon, eBay, and Kijiji are coming up at $150-200 for Book Two, or more.
