I actually had some 2 or 3 years ago at a goon beer tasting in Chicago with a somewhat underwhelming turnout. My friend brought it with her and we foolishly opened it close to the start of the tasting. I think we ended up at two out of the many places we had ultimately planned on going. It's 18% ABV I think?

I heard some stories about this

Saison-Brett is pretty loving perfect. The keg version has pretty tame Brett, but it is an essentially perfect saison. I'm mentally comparing it to saison Dupont, but it's just a tiny bit creamier. I can't wait to hunt down bottles in a month.

Quite many based upon Dales Pale Ale's Specs: 65 IBU/6.5% ABV when looking at BCJP guidelines. It's a drat IPA to everyone but those who follows Oskar Blues style guidelines, just like Deviant Dale's is a god damned IIPA.

What IPA are you drinking?

Edit: For guidelines, an American Pale Ale isn't over 45 IBU, FYI.

I love how the newbie is quoting BJCP at a professional brewer, it's so perfect.

Rarity becomes more interesting when you've more or less exhausted the supply of normal beer you have available to you. However, I will say that takes freaking forever to really do, and even then I'd rather go buy a six pack of Red Seal than try another BA stout anytime soon. But there is something to the novelty of getting to try a beer you won't be able to get again anytime soon.

Semi-rare beer chat: Last night there were two Smuttynose beers tapped at the Map Room in Chicago: Brett & I and a Belgian Imperial Stout. The Brett was fabulous, and reminded me of a Jolly Pumpkin Bam Biere with the brett dialed up a tiny bit and the carbonation dialed a bit down. The Stout was a mess, for me, with too much clove sweetness.

Midorka's post history essentially reads like a semi-autistic goon getting into beer and acting like he knows what he's talking about from day 1, so I know where Kosher man is coming from.

I'm particularly fond of this example that I remember because I found it so amazing:

IPAs not so much?

Could you give me a brief overview of which beers age well and which do not?

It's just called Orval.

I had a Woodcut No. 4 (which is about 2 years old at this point) and a year old or so Alesmith Horny Devil the other night at a cookout (lucky me). I thought the Horny Devil was pretty interesting, with big pear notes that stood out. The Woodcut was really great, with a nice soft body and a lot of subtleness. It reminded me what a "thoughtful" beer was like again, I suppose.

Go to a helping friendly liquor store and ask about their German Bocks. You may enjoy Marzen, doppelbock, and Oktoberfest, as they are all similar styles.

I'll clarify my issues with it: The body is abominable; it's super lean and watery. The chocolate aspect of the beer is also apparently " we want this to taste like watery Hershey's". I had it on tap, so I will assume it was a good example of the beer vs. some kind of messed up bottle. I don't see much of a draw to a "beer" that is essentially watery chocolate-flavored liquid.

I post this mainly because I love bitching about lists like this. My major :what:'s:

90 Minute at 3rd.
Four Sierra Nevadas in the top 12, including the wildly mediocre Ruthless Rye.
Fat Tire anywhere in the top 50, let alone 20th.
Generally ludicrous amounts of IPAs in the top of the list, with the first porter showing up at 21.
Hilariously bad representation from absolutely phenomenal breweries like Victory, North Coast, Great Lakes, etc.

I could go on, but why bother.

And just to back up my bitching with my own list of 25 perfect US beers and some perfect imports. No real order.

After two trips to Wisconsin where I've gone to bars with huge tap lists and tried a few flights of all Wisconsin-based small breweries, I can say that I think Wisconsin beer has to be some of the worst I've had yet.

Recent beers I've had from WI breweries include:
Milwaukee Brewing O-Gii
O'so Spike's Maple Ale
Black Husky Sproose Joose
Lake Louie Dino's Dark
Furthermore Knot Stock
Geneva Lake No Wake
Tyranena Scurvy
Lakefront IPA

Every one besides the Scurvy and Lakefront was average to outright bad, with those two beers being decent enough. I've had some Ale Asylum stuff and Central Waters stuff as well, and it's meh nearly across the board. The only brewery that I think makes dang good beer most of the time is New Glarus.

Wisconsin natives, defend yourselves, because I'm seriously disappointed.
