Buddy of mine charges $500 to put together a pre-made kit of a Stormtrooper but this kind of thing really depends on how much you value your time.

If you think your time is worth $40 and hour that's how much you should charge.

I just started a PAX thread! Do you know of anyone that has room in their hotel? I can pay!

If someone wants to come up with a list of stuff like this I'll add it to the OP. For now I have added what was requested!

Does the battery pack HAVE to be stored in the mask/helmet? Could you feed a wire down the back of your neck or something and store it on your body instead?

I finally get to share our Discworld cosplay! My husband (Killamajig) and I have been working on them for the past month, but haven't been able to take any in-progress pictures since we work at night. The chest pieces are poster board, paper mache, paper clay, wood filler. The skirts are foam leather. My mom knitted up the chainmail - though she was a little worried at first why two grown adults wanted knit chainmail. Now she's really excited to see everything come together.

This is my Angua von Überwald. There's a bright pink bra somewhere under all that breast plate. The collar is my favourite :3:

My husband's Carrot. He wears those tights and that codpiece like a champion. The sword was the bane of his existence - It's cardboard, a wooden dowel, wood filler, oil paint medium, and lots of curse words. It looks okay in the picture, but it's pretty nasty close up.

We'll be headed to Emerald City this evening. Maybe we'll see a few of you there tomorrow? We'll make sure to take pictures of everything on us - I'm experimenting with really creepy blue contacts (though I just discovered I'm not a fan of stuff in my eyes, so we'll see how that goes) and Killamajig is adding more ginger into is already ginger hair.

I think next time I'd like to experiment with something other than paper clay. Wonderflex looks really cool - and now that we know how to form breastplates, I'm sure I'd be more confident working with it. The next cosplay on my list is a Jamie Lannister and Brienne of Tarth crossplay, or Green Arrow and Black Canary. One of Killamjig's requirement for the next set of costumes is that he's able to keep at least some facial hair. Carrot is way too clean shaven for him.

That chainmail looks awesome O_O

Does she do commissions?

Hey cosplay peeps, I'm kind of a scrub when it comes to complicated props, and was wondering what the simplest, cheapest solution would be for getting Travis Touchdown's beam katana from No More Heroes. At what point is a cosplay too easy and people aren't really able to tell that your cosplaying? My girlfriend admittedly looks pretty young for her age (she's only 21 and my father always teases me about dating a teenager), so I think we could pull off Ellie and Joel from The Last of Us:

Fatkraken posted:

uuuuurgh, my sewing machine is on the blink.

Anyone here who's good with sewing machines? I mean really REALLY good, because my problem is very specific and I've ruled out the usual suspects (tension, popped springs, misthreaded bobbins).

Basically, the feed dogs, the little serrated plates under the foot that move up and down and back and forth to pull fabric through the machine as it's sewn, have decided to start misbehaving. When I set the stitch to 4mm (the max on my machine), they move the fabric maybe 1mm, so my stitches are incredibly close together. But that's only half the problem, the big issue is that I mostly use the triple/stretch stitch, which moves the fabric forward AND backwards in turn using the feed dogs so each stitch is gone over multiple times, so it can stretch without popping a seam. The problem is, the forward stitches are half the length they should be, but the backwards ones are the full proper length, so when it tries to go two stitches forward then one stitch back, the needle just keeps going over and over the same spot

I've spent about two hours poking around inside the bloody thing with a screwdriver and I cannot work out what the cause of problem is, nothing seems to have snapped or bent. All I can think is that something within the stitch length setting mechanism has slipped and turning the dial to 4 isn't actually moving the appropriate mechanical parts as far as it should (there's an angled bar/cam mechanism that moves when you turn the dial and when you push it to set the reverse stitch), but I can't even get into that part of the machine, it's hidden really drat well and I'd have to strip it completely, something I'm not confident I could bring it back from. It's an old Janome/New Home 632 if that means anything to anyone, I'm talking OLD, like circa 1970 or something. Until today it was working great :(

I know it's pretty specific, I'm mostly just venting and I'll take it to be repaired next week. Still and absolute pain, and if it can't be fixed an identical replacement is gonna be a bugger to find given it's age.

Check the sewing thread: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2701891&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=60
