I still have a fondness for DW3, even though it has its share of flaws, probably because it was the first in the series that I played. 3XL just improved the fun, as well as adding some pretty amusing 'what if' Musou modes. Not to say I don't enjoy the more recent games though.

Depends on your level. I'm collecting the 5 star weapons atm and most of my characters are in the 30-50 level range, only focused on a few during Ambition mode. Since you have to do that on Hard or harder difficulty, I'm finding the fun in trying to survive battles, especially since I don't generally use Defence Boost skill (set up tends to be Quick Learner/Accuracy, Havoc, Attack Boost, Mighty Roar). It is easy for an AI opponent to one shot with a Musou at those levels, especially on the later stages where enemy stats are pretty high. I find I avoid most of them as soon as I hear the musou sound effect is to run away some distance, turn and block to be sure. Might have to include Defence Boost somewhere if I plan to entertain Ultimate difficulty runs, might be fun to try speedruns at that level.

Anonymous Robot posted:Holy poo poo is the Jin mission where you have to kill Cao Shuang's officers before he escapes, without killing him first, annoying. Battle of Mt Xingshi I expect you mean. I had no trouble doing it on Normal mode, but with the frequency Cao Shuang is in trouble I can imagine this being a pain on higher difficulties. Just treat it like an escort mission basically, and if all else fails use interim saves to guarantee success.

Ah yes, this isn't so bad really. Play the stage normally until Cao Shuang appears. Take out the two sets of generals at the east and centre, and Cao Shuang will attempt to retreat, along with 3 other generals - this is your cue to use whatever means to take out all of the sub-generals and Cao Shuang himself. Pretty straightforward really, but you do have to be quick.

I've asked about this in a couple of places but to no avail right now, wondering if people here had some knowledge about the Support Skills for Bodyguards in DW8XLCE, and what determines how they get upgrades. You get an upgrade to their main skill like Fire Attack if you release enough officers, but sometimes the Support Skill changes by releasing a specific officer. I'm wondering if people have been documenting these skill upgrades and been able to figure out how they work. Even managed to upgrade a support skill more than once on Zhang He, but the same skill slot both times, so I'm wondering if one is always fixed or both can be upgraded. Any information on this will be appreciated.

Has anyone got any idea what happened to Cyclone between DW8 and DW8XL? I heard it was somewhat broken in the base game but the expansion changed it somehow. I'm aware it does percentage-based damage, or at least it did. Would like more details about whether it is always worth having on a custom weapon.

DW8XLCE question: Is there any way to get a second Treasure weapon from the Emperor without having to start a new game on Ambition mode, don't want to have to redo all the bonds I've grinded already?

The question is, which sort of direction should the devs go when it comes to weapon selection? DW8 allowed for all weapons to be used, with Ex attacks being the only difference for an individual officer. SW4 allowed you to reforge a weapon into a type the character uses. Personally I'd like to see them still have the option of all weapon types, but give Ex attacks to more than one weapon, or some other benefit to sticking with a particular weapon. Would be more fitting as you often see characters using a second weapon in their musou, like Shangxiang with a bow or Guan Xing using his father's polearm.

Infinity Gaia posted:For a more challenging time avoid becoming a ruler until way late into a campaign, if at all. This is what I did with my first playthrough. Figured it would help me learn the ropes, since the last Empires game I played was 5:E and wanted to get to grips with the changes between them. Joined the Yellow Turbans and pretty much stayed best buds with Zhang Jiao all the way through. Got 3/4 of China taken over now, just a few stragglers to pick off. Next time I plan to take over pretty early and give Hard a whirl.

The range on those towers is pretty significant, since you can even place it between two adjacent bases and it can easily target both in most cases. OTOH, the Cover Fire Large Scale Stratagem seems to be a full battle version of a tower, so even range won't be an issue if you really don't want to worry about it.

So, I love how dumb the AI rulers can be. Started a fresh game on Hard. using one of my female CAWs, and after a small amount of messing around as a free officer (mainly to get the 5 year and negative virtue rewards), I join Liu Yao. And I instantly regret as he doesn't pay attention to troop numbers and just attacks regardless. After a few battles (most won, a few lost), I realised how quickly I was burning through troops and by the end didn't even have enough to mount a suitable defence when the other AIs took advantage of his incompetence. The final straw was when Lu Xun (who I was married to) was killed off in battle. So far, I left, wandered about for a bit and joined up with the AI that was owning the most land, and am finally glad to have a somewhat competent ruler as we easily crush the first invasion we had. It's been a way to actually see things from the character's perspective for once, as all the stuff that led up to my current position had me thinking in character and going along with that rather than the optimal path. I sort of like going with the flow now. Seems this game is better for narrative experience, which makes sense with all the CAW options, and the Way of Life system. EDIT: Figured out what I was doing wrong with the troop number issue, and holy poo poo I feel dumb. Just don't participate in every battle and defence mission and you'll have the time build up your troops quite easily. Even managed to make a few alliances and rely on my silly Intimidate skill to build up troops even further, so going from always losing troops to always gaining troops (waited until I had over 60k to be sure, but I'm sure in future I can get away with much less to be breaking even/in profit after a battle) was an exercise in ease. Now I just wish I could get a promotion so I could stop the AI targeting useless areas each month, would rather they target one leader and take his areas for good rather than going for multiple regions from different rulers. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v296/Toothache42/dw8e_tower.png So, here's something prone to abuse in DW8E: you can place towers outside the normal map boundaries. This was actually dropped by an enemy and I took it over using False Orders, but still begs the question why it was even possible in the first place?

So, I was in a strange mood, and decided to go play some DW2 of all things. It's amazing how basic and yet still fun those older games can be, and I remember my frustration and joy from trying to learn all the combos in order to get better upgrades from the officers. It's a mechanic that in some ways I wish had stuck around, as I feel it encourages you more to experiment with the combos and different types of attacks.

Yellow Storm ver 2 was the redone version from DW3. I've noticed a lot of people cite DW3 as their favourite in the series, and after playing a lot of DW2 lately I can see more of why. In DW2 the combat was very basic, bare bones. No weapon upgrades, everything is limited to 4 hit combos, and only a small handful of maps and the focus of the playthroughs are just the main 3 armies. DW3 changes everything, from adding multiple weapons per character, items, elemental attacks, 5 and 6 hit combos, making it even easier to hit those +8 stat upgrades, seperating HP and Musou bars, many more maps and making each character's playthrough unique rather than forcing the same layout. The game improved so much from DW2, and then the XL expansion added a bunch of extras like giving some focus to the non-affiliated characters, many more items, and even more weapon options as well as a Very Hard option. DW3 was the first in the series I played after all, and I still have a huge fondness for it, especially after going back and playing the older games again I am appreciating why I enjoy it so much compared to other titles.
