That's the throttle body butteryfly on an Audi RS4. We were doing the plugs on my buddy's car and I caught a glimpse of it when we pulled off the top of the airbox. This picture makes it look pretty normal in size. Note that the inlet tube is 4+" in diameter. I was pretty amazed by the thing.

I don't know how we feel about Jay Leno around here, but this video brought tears to my eyes. Thank goodness there are rich bastards like him in the world willing to spend retarded money to be able to beat on incredible cars on public roads. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIxlql0Ebnc I know it's a replica, but a $250k replica is still about 5x as expensive as I could justify for a weekend fun car.

On Friday and today, I drove a Porsche Cayman R, a Ferrari 458, a Ferrari 430 Scuderia, a McLaren MP4-12C and a Porsche 911 (997) Turbo S around a racetrack. Really hard. With an instructor beside me the whole time, pushing me to go faster. I will post some pictures and videos later but for now, I have had two days of the AIest poo poo I can imagine. It was epic fun and those cars are everything I always wanted them to be (especially the Scuderia - it is the Ferrariest Ferrari. Undoubtedly). Except the 911 which was spooky fast but... soft. Horrible to share without media but I thought if anyone would appreciate the way I feel right now it would be you guys. Also, I did this with my father. Best family vacation ever.

Gets my heart rate up just listening to it in that video. Coming soon: McLaren MP4-12C - they didn't include it on my DVD so I need to wait for it to come in the mail. ninja edit: I clipped out all the pre-drive and post-drive chatter. Rev. Dr. Moses P. Lester posted:Were you as impressed by the 458 as I was? It felt like perfect. Comfortable, easy to drive, good looking interior. Nothing that felt weird about it. I'd never driven anything fancier than a 1st gen RX7, but I felt right at home in it. Yup. I'd daily drive a 458. Amazing, amazing car in every way. Great sound, great brakes, great ride, super handling. I loved the F430 Scuderia the most from a pure "oh my god, this is what I always hoped a Ferrari would be" perspective, and I had Ferraris on my wall as a kid rather than Lambos. I loved the MP4-12C the most from a "learning to do things right" perspective, because it talks to you all the time - and smacks you if you do things wrong. But if you react well, it will come right back into line. And it is monstrously quick. I loved the Cayman R the most from a pure driving joy perspective. So fun, so tossable, so responsive. I wish the transmission didn't automatically gear down when you stomp on it, but that's a tiny niggle against a car that I will probably end up buying. Or an Elise. OH NO CANNOT DECIDE

mattmofob posted:This is a stupid kit on a miata but I still want one. Jim Simpson is an awesome AI dude. He has an amazing collection of Alfas, a couple of other beauties (concours winning Fiat? Two of the Nardi Blue Rays?) too. My father (who is kind of AI awesome himself ) has a Miata with that body kit, a Ford V8 / 5-speed and Dayton knock-offs (I mean "use a hammer to take them off" not "they're fakes"). It's an absolute hoot to drive. At the dyno facility. I road-tuned it (it's a bored / stroked Mustang engine with a Quarterhorse ECU piggyback board) the day before. Strapped in. Note the plate (heh) and watercut aluminum logo (my sister designed it!). MTM = Mel's Torque Monster. Yes, it actually displaces 5.8L after the bore / stroke. I'ma let this speak for itself. I suspect that there's something wrong with this dyno, but it pulled strong and consistently so 6 times. I was mostly concerned about the AFR which we tweaked a bit in between pulls. A bad picture of my father and the car. He daily drives it until it starts to snow. So yeah. That body kit and Jim Simpson are both pretty awesome and AI in my humble.

InitialDave posted:You can buy kits which are a spline-drive for the wire wheel bolting onto the regular hub, so I'd guess it's one of those types of things. This is exactly it. The wire knock-offs and the Ferrari mirrors really make the look of the car work, I think (the Cobra rear-view mirror is pretty cool too). And it is silly, silly fun to drive.

The MTM definitely has top-end work done (cams, port/polish, etc.) - but like I said, there's something off with that dyno so I don't trust the raw numbers. I suspect it's around 375tq / 300hp based on my butt-dyno. It seriously motivates the Miata, at any rate, so whatever it makes is more than enough. Per my previous, I wanted the AFR sniffer more than the power output. Road tunes can be dangerous.

Awesome AI poo poo: a recent conversation between my wife () and myself (): There isn't enough room in our car for all our diving gear. The trunk's too small and I hate station wagons. We need an SUV. Yeah, I've been thinking the same thing. Maybe an XTerra or something? I love XTerras, I've had two of them. But it has to be a manual. Cool, well let's look into trading the Beemer in. And on a related subject, I've noticed that Testarossas are in the price slump that all the 12-pot Ferraris go through. I've always wanted one and... Oh, we're getting a Ferrari? Nice. ... When? They're pretty expensive to maintain, right? ...well, we'll need to move, I need a garage so I can do the work on it. The parts for a major service are only $1,500 or so but you have to pull the engine to do it and... Ok, great. Well let's figure that out and you can get your car, and then you can work on the bikes too. And we'll have the room we need for all our poo poo. How often do you need to do a major? ...I... Um. Every five years or 45,000 km. Oh! That's not bad then. Are you excited? ... What? Um. You'll drive it too, right? Nah. I'd rather ride my motorcycle. But I'll come with you! Context: My wife is loving rad. We already own Ducatis. Apparently I'm a glutton for Italian mechanical / electrical punishment and roadside assistance. And being very, very poor. Oh god.
