So I was at the WRC Central European Rally and despite some poo poo getting in the way, like beign sick and lovely weather, and missing a stage because of traffic, it was pretty fun.

Thursday

Friday

The stage got canceled because of dangerous fan behavior after like 3 cars but at least I saw someone show up in a mint Sierra

The next stage got dark really fast as it was just around sunset

Saturday

Got to Bayerischer Wald late because of terrible traffic on the way to the stage, and they canceled or delayed the rest race after a few cars :v:

Another Fan Zone had local live music though to keep everyone busy until the cars returned for the second go

Sunday
Only two stages on Sunday and I stayed at Passauer Land

From the same spot you could see another section of the track behind you

Going up that hill gives another view of the start and that hairpin

There are some very smart people running a Porsche, an Alpine and a Fiata:

I put the camera away and was loving around with the phone when this happened

wasn't even expecting to capture anything (I saw absolutely nothing happen the entire weekend) and so I'm still mad it's off by like 0.5 seconds. They just slid down the grass hill and got back on the road luckily

Incredible attention to detail and execution. Bring me back... uhh almost two decades when I was in the UK and these were the hot tuner cars. I still must have a few magazines I brought over stashed somewhere.

Why is it not a Cosworth though

Dude says in the video they wanted to build something as if Ford were selling it today with modern hotrodding ideas.

Stock for stock, the 2.3 EcoBoost can be had with as much as 350hp in Focus RS trim vs the YB's 201hp. Plus, from the Cosworth guys I follow, you're not getting a freshly built YB for anything less than £5000 with many builds twice that. This guy is is North America where I assume he can have his choice of 2.3's out of any number of wrecked rental Mustangs.

Oh, thanks. I skipped around the video a bit as they launched into :words: backstory at the beginning. The build must've cost :homebrew: anyway so I'm not sure the cost would be a significant difference, but using a common modern engine surely would make everything much easier.

That's true but it hasn't been brought back, it's just evolved considerably in the decades since the US last got them.

e; it's also worth noting that all 'modern' (90s onwards) Crowns have been tall and awkward looking when completely stock. Check out what Aimgain have done with the crossover, it looks loving great.

The CUV atrocity aside, the recent Crowns have been fine? About what I'd expect for a stock sports sedan

The Holden grille is best but I don't think the Pontiac one was that bad.

Unlike the BMW one :barf:

Room for an entire gasoline generator under the hood...

Haha I didn't even notice that! Looking through some other photos there and it seems to have a window AC stuck through the rear doors, I'm guessing you can run it directly with the generator.

Actually cars in cities rule too if you've ever driven around at night. I think the trick is to make sure everyone else isn't driving at the same time, somehow.

Saw this a few days ago in Romania

I didn't have time to examine it but being where it was I guess some kind of Dacia because I've never seen such a thing before.

Also depends how lovely driving is in comparison. PT inherently has some compromises - fixed stops, no direct connections to destination, wait times, sharing space etc.

We have very good public transport here by any measure (usually ranked one of the top in Europe) and I live close to a metro station that can take me directly to the opposite side of the city. Still, it's a 10 minute walk, add a 5 minute wait and it's 15 minutes in which I could be halway to my destination in the car. My weekly football game is 50 minutes away by PT or 25 driving:

As it takes place late, especially during the winter the trip is pretty awful. Imagine being exhausted, steamed from the shower, and walking 10 minutes in freezing rain to the stop, then waiting 10 minutes in a windy tunnel, then bouncing around the (thankfully empty) train for 40 minutes. Then walking in the rain again. Fundamentally, there's nothing you can do to improve this experience. Driving just gets relatively worse during rush hours.

I think the goal of 15-minute ciites and in general is/should be to make most common trips - work commutes, school, daily shopping, doable without a car. Or ideally without any transport really. If you didn't have to design everything for these peaks of crowds going one way than the other at the same time, the infrastructure could be significantly scaled down.

Any idea where this is from? The Central European WRC I was at would get shut down (and one stage did get canceled) if spectators did poo poo like this, I'm pretty sure.

I just got back from a trip to Guatemala and Costa Rica. If you like small old trucks, that's definitely the place to be.

Looks fun, especially considering some of the engineering decisions on the Twingo

and unlike the Mongol rally at least the entrance fee gets you some services in return.

SlowBloke posted:

The explosion of rally raid series in Morocco might hopefully one day lead for Dakar to move away from Saudi Arabia, also I remember the twingo HVAC to be very asthmatic so it might be a tad miserable.
That seems like an inherent part of the experience
